BREAKING: Seaborn names Tyler as running mate
Saturday, July 9th, 2022
President Sam Seaborn's campaign announced that former governor Robert "Bobby" Tyler of Virginia will be his running mate, making Tyler the first African-American to appear on a major party ticket.
"President Seaborn has chosen former Governor Bobby Tyler to be our VP nominee," a text sent out to supporters and donors stated. "Watch the first Seaborn-Tyler rally live at 4PM EST." the text finishes, embedding a hyperlink to a livestream of a campaign rally in Philadelphia later today.
An email announcing the selection was simultaneously sent to those subscribed to the campaign's mailing list.
Tyler, who served as governor of Virginia from 2018 to 2022, is a self-described as a "moderate progressive" and has been credited for helping Seaborn become the first Democrat in over 50 years to win Virginia during the president's first campaign in 2018. Since he left office (Virginia state law does not allow its governors to seek immediate re-election), he has joined the board of a Virginia non-profit that advocates education reform.
Vice President Jack Hunter, who was informed of Seaborn's selection just before the campaign's announcement, issued a brief statement saying that Tyler's nomination was a "historic occasion" that showed "great progress towards making Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream a reality."
If elected, Tyler would be the first African-American vice president, and the first person of color to serve as vice president since Charles Curtis, a Native American and member of the Kaw nation, who served as vice president from 1929 to 1933 under Herbert Hoover.
