Greetings from Abya Yala!

Many explorers of the Age of Discovery including Sir Walter Raleigh and Admiral Piri Reis noted peculiarities in the geography of South America during some of the first European expeditions into the green continent's interior. Coupled with rumours of wealthy civilizations hidden from European conquest, the obscure theory of the Otherworld began to develop from ancient folk tales and strange pieces of evidence. By the 18th century much of South America had been explored and colonized, leading natural philosophers to dismiss strange legends of a golden city or giant men of the south.

Of course, the natural philosophers were forced to open their eyes two hundred years later when in 1928 Lieutenant-Colonel Percy Fawcett reappeared in Cuiaba with groundbreaking news: he had found the eighth continent.

Fawcett and his party had spent the last three years documenting the civilizations along the east coast of a country that would later be dubbed Abya Yala. As Fawcett saw it, this land had served as a shelter for many indigenous peoples fleeing the Conquista. The Republic of Amazonia was truly ancient, having been established sometime before the rise of Mesopotamia. In fact, it is believed by followers of Fawcett that significant portions of the Amazon Rainforest's biomass directly stems from runaway cultivars in the dreamworld. On the other hand, the Empire of El Dorado was established after the arrival of the Europeans and first documented by Sir Walter Raleigh as governing from the city of Manoa on the shore of Lake Parime. Fawcett also noted the presence of other, non-indigenous peoples southeast of Amazonia; many of these people were religious or ethnic minorities fleeing persecution and had somehow accessed the Dreamlands before him. Most notable of the European states is the Visigothic kingdom of Antillia and Roillo (actually north of Amazonia) which was founded in the late 700s.

Upon returning to our world, Fawcett's discoveries were met with much fanfare and even legitimized a previous expedition into the Amazon by Professor George Challenger, which was previously dismissed as a publicity stunt (despite the incident with the pterodactyl.) However, it became difficult to replicate Fawcett's route through the Amazon into the Otherworld, which made British scientists cast doubt on the veracity of his statements. To this day, while the public is somewhat aware of the existence of the Dreamlands, formal contact with Abya Yala and other parts of the world has not been established.

The last major expedition to Abya Yala from Earth was in 1947 when Portugal attempted to purge the presence of Nazis in their Brazilian holdings. German scientists had been working on ways to access the Dreamlands since the disappearance of Ruritania and it appears that their work was continued while hiding from Allied forces in South America. Their arrival on the southeast shore of Abya Yala created tension with the Amazonians, whose governments sought to curb the intrusion by officially placing the many small states between them and the Patagonians under their protection. The Patagonians, a rather ancient and hostile confederation of Giant tribes, apparently welcomed their new allies due to receiving some correspondence from Germany shortly before the War.

There is barely any contact between the east and west coasts of Abya Yala due to the impassible mountains and jungle of the interior. There may very well be civilization on the interior waiting to be dreamed of, but all expeditions have only been met with resistance from the diminutive Duendes. On the west coast lay two countries: Havaiki, which is simultaneously the first and last Austronesian-settled territory (that's what happens when you dream of both found and lost lands being in the same place) and Los Brujos, which is actually more of a collection of magocracies descended from warlocks that fled Chile some time ago. Despite being one another's only civilized neighbors, these two nations have been locked in constant and persistent conflict in an attempt to stop the other from expanding.

In the modern day, Abya Yala remains a fantastic choice for a vacation spot for theosophically-minded people.

1552-1556

FRANCE AND ITALY;
The Hapsburg-Valois War (1551-59)

In the north, Charles captured Thérouanne after a two month siege in April-June 1553. Command passed to Emmanual Philibert, Duke of Savoy, who captured Hesdin in the Pas-de-Calais and destroyed it. Henry II attacked Cambrai, but retreated when Charles V appeared in person.

In August 1554 the French were defeated at Marciano, allowing the blockade of Sienna to be strengthened.
The main French campaign of 1554 occurred in the Meuse valley, where they captured Marienburg, Dinant and Bouvines. Charles ordered construction of fortresses at Charlemont and Philippeville, near Liège. Henry attacked Namur, bringing Charles back into the field. Henry II pulled back to besiege Renty, and the armies clashed in the minor battle of Renty in August 1554. Both sides claimed victory, but it was Henry who withdrew. Charles meanwhile raided across Picardy rather than pursuing.

In April 1555 Siena surrendered after food supplies ran out, initially the entire area was held by the Spanish, but in 1557 Philip gave the city and most of the State to Cosimo de Medici, Duke of Florence. Five sea ports were kept by the Spanish and ruled from Naples as the 'Stato dei Presidi'.

Pope Julius III died on 24 March 1555, followed by Marcellus II who died a month later. Pope Paul IV, a stubborn opponent of Spain, succeeded in April. The new Pope arranged an alliance with France.

In February 1556 Charles and Henry II agreed the Truce of Vaucelles. Charles used this time to transfer his powers and titles to his brother, Ferdinand and his son Philip.

He abdicated as King of Spain and Sicily in favour of Philip [II] who was already Duke of Milan and King of Naples, in October 1555, he also passed the Netherlands to Philip. Abdicating as Holy Roman Emperor in favour of Ferdinand, who also recieved Habsburg Austria, was more complex, it involved the German Diet. Ferdinand became Holy Roman Emperor in 1558.

In the Mediterranean, French and Ottoman fleets were co-operating. An Ottoman fleet, together with a French squadron, raided the coasts of Naples, Sicily, Elba, and Corsica in 1553.

The Ottoman fleet ferried French troops from Sienna to Corsica. Supported by Corsican Bastia and Saint-Florent were captured in August 1553, Bonifacio was captured in September. Calvi surrendered after the Turkish fleet returned to Istanbul, the island was occupied, almost completely, by the end of the summer.
Only 5,000 old soldiers garrisoned the island, along with the Corsican insurgents. Henry II negotiated with Genoa in November 1553 but Genoa sent 15,000 men and recaptured Saint-Florent.

By 1555, the French had been cleared from most of the coastal cities but many areas remained under French control. French diplomats arranged the return of the fleet but it stood by during the siege of Calvi, contributing little. It was also inactive during the siege of Bastia, which had been retaken by the Genoese.

Finally, in the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559, the French returned Corsica to Genoa.

HUNGARY;
Ferdinand did not fulfill his obligations to Queen Isabella, she wanted to move closer to the Hungarian border and both the Turkish and French encouraged her to return to Transylvania.
Sulieman returned Lugos and Karánsebes, in 1554, to those who wanted Ferdinand out.
The Székelys and some nobles hoisted Prince John's flag and asked the Sultan to help them although the Szász [also known as "Saxons" although the original settlers came from many parts of Germany] remained loyal to the Habsburgs. The nobles György Bebek, György Báthory, Gábor Perényi and Ferencz, and András Báthory supported Isabella who arrived home in 1556.
Ferdinand asked for a one-year truce which was granted as Sulieman needed time to fight the Persians but still, in 1554 he bought Fülek and Salgót, bribing the defenders.

Sulieman told the Transylvanians that if they did not restore John he would destroy the land. In February 1556 Parliament sent an envoy to Isabella and John to come home.
The whole country accepted Isabella and John, with the exception of a few castles, where Ferdinand had garrisons. Parliament asked them to leave peacefully and hand over the castles but their commander would not consider retreat without resistance.

In summer 1555, the Transdanubian forces gathered. The Habsburg leadership did not know what the target of the campaign would be. They expected the attack to come west from Veszprem but, as they could not be certain, troops were stationed near Körmend. Part of the army set off from Buda and was transported by ship to Tolna. Other formations marched south from Szekesfehervar to Kaposvár. Southern forces headed from the Danube.

The Habsburgs were unprepared, no supplies or reinforcements arrived in the endangered castles. The siege of Kaposvár began in September and the small forts in the area, Szentjakab and Kaposmérő, fell almost immediately. The Turks arrived with an army of about 10,000 and forcibly mobilized the peasants of the area to work. Seeing the castle was indefensible the garrison to nearby Korotna and Szenyér.
During the campaign of 1555, the county of Somogy was lost, and now the Turks of Kaposvár, Korotna and Babócsa also ravaged and looted the area. However, Szigetvár remained still standing, and both sides were aware that this was the key to lasting possession of the region. In late 1555 Ferdinand attempted bribery of the Turkish garrison in Kaposvár.

The struggle continued in 1556 with the siege of Szigetvár. Ferdinand made great efforts to liberate the city on which the retention of Somogy depended. Croatian forces captured Babocsa, defeating the Turk attempt to re-take it in July. Whilst the main force was absent the Szigetvár garrison sallied, attacked the Turkish camp and carried away loot and food which enabled Szigetvár to resist the siege.

Ferdinand gathered an army, headed by his second son, Archduke Ferdinand but it was already short of food. Archduke Ferdinand moved on Korotna which fell in September. Görösgál, and Sellye's Turkish garrisons fled and the Archduke thought to advance towards Pécs, but it was rumored that 60,000 Turkish troops were approaching.

In June 1556, Ferdinand wrote to the Sultan, confirming the verbal offer of his ambassadors to revoke Transylvania and give it to John II Zápolya, to evacuate the castles and withdraw his troops from the country but, prompted by the French, Suleiman made new demands. He demanded the dismantling of fortifications at Szigetvár. News of this only reached Ferdinand in the summer of 1557, negotiations were slow due to travel between the two capitals, whilst talks took place, in March 1558 they made a seven-month truce.

ENGLAND;
Wyatt's rebellion
A popular English uprising in 1554, named after it's leader, Thomas Wyatt. The rebellion arose from concern over Queen Mary I's determination to marry Philip of Spain and, "to prevent us from over-running by strangers".

In November 1553 a Parliamentary delegation waited upon the Queen, formally requesting that she choose an English husband. After Queen Mary I’s accession, there were questions whether England would return to Catholicism. Some would welcome this but it was a concern for many Protestants. With many Catholics appointmed to the Privy Council and other posts, fears began to grow.

The rebellion also provided a way for the lower classes to voice their frustrations, specifically yeomen, husbandmen, and urban workers who expressed social and economic frustrations.
There were four main focii for the rebellion, Kent, Hertfordshire, Devon and Leicestershire which recieved support from the French ambassador, who knew that a Spanish king on the throne of England was not in the best interests of France.

Plans went awry when the HRE ambassador informed the Lord Chancellor there was a rebellion planned. The Devon rebellion failed through lack of support, as did Leicestershire, raising only 140 men.
Only Wyatt, in Kent, succeeded in raising a substantial force.
In January 1554 Wyatt occupied Rochester. The sheriff, seemed able to suppress the rising, routing a rebel force of 500 in late 28 January. But the Spanish marriage was unpopular, and Kent was affected by reformist preaching. The sheriff's men deserted who went over to Wyatt. He now had 3,000 men at his command, later boosted by a detachment of the London trainbands, sent against him, which raised his numbers to 4,000.

The Queen sent a deputation to Wyatt to ask for his terms, he demanded the Tower of London be surrendered to him, and the Queen put under his charge. These demands turned an initially sympathetic London against Wyatt, and Mary was able to rally the capital to her cause.

Wyatt reached Southwark in February bur Mary's supporters occupied London Bridge and the rebels were unable to penetrate the city. Wyatt was driven from Southwark by the threat cannon-fire from the guns of the Tower.

The rebels marched to Kingston, although the bridge there was destroyed, the rebels repaired it and crossed. They met little resistance marching through the outskirts of London, but were stopped by the inhabitants of Ludgate. The rebel army then broke up.

Wyatt surrendered and was tried and executed, his family lost their title and lands, including the family home, Allington Castle but, when Elizabeth ascended the throne in 1558, she restored the families titles and lands.

The Bourbon Restoration
Lx0ZAfg.png

A map of the restored Bourbon Kingdoms in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. This is a map I made for my
Napoleonic Timeline: Imperator Francorum which details the rise of the Second French Empire under a surviving Napoleon II, L'Aiglon. Here in this timeline, Napoleon dies heroically at Leipzig leading his men in a final charge against the coalition's encirclement of his forces. One butterfly that resulted from these events is that the Murats were allowed to keep the Neopolitan throne after cutting a deal with the Austrians in the wake of Napoleon's downfall. As you can see, France is larger than its otl borders in 1815. This is because there was no Hundred Days campaign which saw some of France territory stripped from it as punishment for the War of the Seventh Coalition. I just published a chapter on the Austrian Empire, and I'm planning on covering the Bourbon Monarchies soon. What do you guys think of this map?
Also Vive la France! Dieu sauve le Roi!

This is cool as hell, I'd definitely like to see more.
The premise was inspired by @dakkafex 's fantastic story on this site Deep Night, but based around Triton instead of Europa. Also, rather than Europa being the last bastion of humanity, here Triton is the first bastion of.... well... [SPECPOL CENSOR ADDED]
Thank you! Two hundred calories have been added to this month's allotment in recognition of your efforts! I had actually initially considered setting Deep Night around one of the ice giants or on a Kuiper Belt/Oort Cloud Object (Sedna in particular 👀) with everything up through at least Saturn being lost, but thought that might be too bleak.

Love this. Reminds me of this fantastic world building project, which also compiles mythical realms and reconstructs them into a parallel "dream" world that occasionally intersects our own:

Is this for After the End, or a more general medieval/post-calamity America?

Not to heap on too much praise and bury you beneath it, but Deep Night remains one of my favorite things to ever come out of this website. Really hope you pick it up or make similar scenarios in the future.

That's really cool looking. It certainly looks like a complex web of international relations, with plenty of opportunities for intriguing stories. I especially like the effort that you put into Mexico and the rocky mountains region. One thing I'm a little confused about is the long, thin snaky regions, like the one that separates the yellow-green country in present-day New York and the beige country in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. And there are several others, like the one between Quebec and the lands to the north. Are these contested areas that act as a sort off transition zone between the regions on either side? Are they some sort of militarized border territories that are fully controlled by one side or the other, but are shown in a different color because of their special status within their country? Are they fully independent states that just happen to have a snakelike shape? I'm very curious. Whatever the case may be, it's an excellent map.

My guess would be that they're marches/transition zones, since those were fairly common and prominent in the Middle Ages.

Thank you, and don't worry - I haven't abandoned it, life's been coming at me fast this year and I've been having some trouble finishing the latest chapter. Rest assured it will be done, I just can't say exactly when right now.

Hi! So, just a small detail, but this is the first honest-to-god map I've posted in my new timeline, If You Can Keep It, which essentially deals with a switching of fates for Latin America and the United States (it's more complex but that's the basic gist of it all). I'd really appreciate it if you checked it out!

An American Boy's First History of the World. "Chapter 14: The American Indians." Ephraditus Press, Philadelphia, Penn, Republican Union. 1938.

"... When Columbus met the first Indians in 1492, he found them to be living in a state quite different from Europeans: they did not wear clothes, they did not sail ships, and they did not have guns. For centuries, they were written off as savages, but in many ways they were better off than the Europeans! Though they did not have many of the material things that Europeans had, they lived in touch with nature - and they bathed far more regularly! In many ways, the American Indians lived like Adam and Eve. They were what the philosophers called "Noble Savages"...

... There were once many Red Indian Tribes and Countries in the Americas. When the Europeans arrived, many of these were destroyed. A few were preserved thanks to help by Europeans that saw the virtue of the Noble Savage - these are Chiloe (Chill-Oh-Ay), Paraguay (Pear-Uh-Gway), Acre, Teguayo (Ti-Gway-Oh), and Moskito in South and Central America. The Founding Fathers of our Union saw the virtues of the Indians, but also wished to extend the benefits of Civilization to them. They reached a compromise: the Indians would be given the gifts of Liberty and Industry, but allowed to maintain their unique culture and wisdom in "Autonomous Indian Republics." Though the Autonomous Indian Republics (or AIRs for short) are often called States today, they are not exactly the same. The first AIR to be admitted was Iroquois (Ear-Uh-Coy) in 1796. The second was Indiana in 1802. Fox was admitted in 1811. Potawatomia (Pot-Ah-Wah-Toe-Me-Uh) was admitted in 1820. Ojibwa was admitted in 1832.

The founding fathers of the New Atlantis disagreed with the Union. They believed that progress was the most important thing of all, and that progress could not be slowed down on account of the Red Men. The Cherokee (Chair-Oh-Key), the Chickasaw, the Choctaw, the Creek, and the Seminole Indians attempted to keep the pace and adapt to the civilized world, but they would not move fast enough for the Atlanteans.

The Atlanteans were trying to buy Louisiana (Lou-Wheeze-Ee-Anna) from the Latin Republic. They intended to move the Indians here so that they could deal with them later. However, the Consul of the Latins and the President of the Union were concerned about the welfare of the Indians. Further, the Union and the Hudson's Bay Company both thought that the land should belong to them. A compromise was struck: the northern part of Louisiana would be a free and neutral nation for all the Indians who remained savage. Atlantis would get a discount, the Union would pay a part of the cost, and both countries would benefit from intercourse and trade with the reserve nation. This nation would be called Upper Louisiana, as it was made from the northern half of Louisiana.

Being savages, the government of the Indians would be a Kingdom, as that is the first step of civilized government. The first King would be the Chief of the Cherokee. His daughter would marry the son of the chief of the Sioux (Soo) to produce the next king...

...Today, Upper Louisiana is still lay half way between savagery and civilization, just as its founders intended. In the East, great cities exist along the Mississippi, prime among them Indian City, which is little different from New York, Philadelphia, or Port Tecumseh. Here most of North America's beef is produced and potted. In the West, however, much of the country is sparsely inhabited and wild - here, it is rare to find electricity, railways, or airplanes.

The Government was reformed in the 1920s to end the domination of the Cherokee and the Sioux Horsemen, to increase the power of Parliament, and to grant more rights to the nations who were denied their own Council Fires. The capital was moved from Indian City to the newly built city of Covenant, which is much closer to the center of the Kingdom...

... The prime industries of Upper Louisiana are lumber, mining, and agriculture, namely cattle. English is the common language of the country with the most speakers. However, it is the second language of many who prefer to speak their tribal tongues. The largest religion in the kingdom is New Israelism, a religion peculiar to that country. It was founded by the Unionite Solomon Spalding in 1808, who lived on the border between Iroquois and New Connecticut (which was then still a part of Connecticut). He claimed that an angel had visited him, and revealed to him that the American Indians were the result of the intermingling between lost grandchildren of Noah and the lost tribes of Israel. He further claimed that they were God's Chosen People, and that the gods and heroes of the Indians were in reality Saints and Angels. He then wrote a book he claimed to be an ancient manuscript, the third book of the Bible. After his death, his followers were invited to Indian City by a Cherokee salon society, and they began spreading their religion. Today, around forty-five one hundredths of the Louisianan Indians are New Israelites, thirty one hundredths are Christians, fifteen one hundredths are Catholics, and ten one hundredths maintain their ancient religions..."

"RHINEBUNDER-UNIONITE FIRMS WIN DAM CONTRACT, ATLANTEANS CUT OUT.

COVENANT, West Dakota - After months of negotiation, Prime Minister
Chitto Red Eagle,Baron of Tuskegee, has announced that his government
has reached an agreement with the Rhinebunder firm Neumann-Blatzy to
begin construction on several dams for the purposes of improving the
basin of the Snake River.

"The Snake River project is of paramount importance," the Prime Minister
told the Phoneix's correspondent. "Sosoneland and the Snake River as
a whole have enormous industrial and agricultural potential. It's about
time we help bring the western half of our country into the 20th century."

The Prime Minister went on to describe his vision for the modernization
of the Western Council Fires, which is key to the platform of the Progress
& Democracy Party. "If we are to become a civilized country, than we
not only must extend the values of equality and freedom to all of our
nations - we must materially improve their lives."

Republican Union firm Industrious Solutions has also been hired to
participate in the improvement project. Negotiations are ongoing with
Ouragon over water and electricity rights, but are expected to be concluded
by the end of this Session of Parliament.

Notably absent from negotiations, however, were the Atlanteans. Atlantean
firm Ars Magna, which has previously aided in industrialization and
modernization programmes, was lobbying to be the prime contractor, but it
has not even received part of the contract. Some commentators suggest that
this may represent a move on the part of the government away from Bensalem
and towards New York and Paris.

In a speech on Thursday, Atlantean President Nash said that he was "very
disappointed" by the PM's decision. "Can we not put the past behind us? If
the Red Man wishes to prove that he is capable of being a builder of the New
Jerusalem, he must first act like one and not allow ancient squabbles
to cloud his judgement. Our nation [Atlantis] is the most advanced in the world.
We generously offer to aid in the transmutation of mankind, but first mankind
must let us."

Sovereign's Herald, Pale of the Prairies. October 22 1942. Bureau of Heraldry, Chamber of the Pale of the Prairies.

"Good evening, Subjects. This is the Sovereign's Herald for the Pale of the Prairies.

Yesterday, there was a mass attempt at smuggling Hudson's Bay company property through the Pale of the Prairies. 24 units of tribe #1020 were found in a railway car in Caledon-Upon-Red-River. They were attempting to illegally make their way to the Lands of the State of Nature and ungratefully throw off the caressing grasp of the Sovereign. All 24 units will be taken to Hobbes and decommissioned by drawing-and-quartering on the morrow for public enjoyment - a more merciful fate than being cast into the State of Nature. All immediate surviving family members of the 20 Units are to be outlawed and exiled to Patagonia. All members tribe #1020 are to be subject to twenty lashes and a reduced ration.

No doubt this is another attempt by the savages of the State of Nature and their confederates to bolster their numbers and ride against the Sovereign, which could only end in their slaughter - though of course, it would end with them killing each other first, as that is the nature of the savage.

Let this be a lesson to all Subjects, Servants, and Tribals who may hear this - the Sovereign's Grasp is all that there is. Anything outside of it is death, death and misery. We must be stern to teach the savage this lesson so that he may one day be subsumed into our Leviathan, but even this sternness is more merciful than what lay beyond the Pale, or indeed beyond the Company Lands.

This is the Sovereign's Herald for the Pale of the Prairies. Next is 'Rule Britannia', followed by the times for the posting of this month's Proscription Lists..."
