Josef Schneider (1072-1096)

Who am I ? To tell the truth, after all this time…I'm not even sure myself any more.

It doesn't really matter anymore. Who I was, what I stood for, it's all nothing more than a memory. What does it matter, really? That time is long since past. Nothing survives, and regardless of what the other cursed ones like myself claim, we didn't either.

…You still want to know? Fine. I will tell you my story. I'll tell you all of it.

I was born in the year 1072 In the Years of Our Lord, in the northern area of what today would be called Switzerland. I was a peasent's son, Josef Schneider, and as such had almost no potential for advancement in society. For seventeen years I laboured in the service of my feudal lord, not happily, but what else could I do?

That's when my curse began.

It was nothing spectacular. No, my hell began in a rather unspectacular matter. There was a hunting accident, and I was pierced with an arrow to the shoulder. Alone, it was not fatal, but that didn't matter. I was a long way away from any civilization, and bleeding and infection finished the job. In a small time, though it seemed agonizingly slow at the time, my pain ended and I collapsed to the floor, dead.

I wish that would have been the end of it.

Instead, I woke up several days later to the sight of the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. I asked her where we were, who was she, and why was she caring for me? She said that her father had found me out in the woods, surrounded by blood but mostly healed. I was, of course, shocked. How could I have survived? It must have been God's blessing that allowed me to survive.

Blessing, ha! I was so naive back then.

Regardless, I was now in the care of the prettiest woman I had ever met, and I took full advantage of the fact. My wounds healed quickly, and soon I had no reason to stay. Despite that, I refused to leave. Instead, I chose to stay behind, to forge a relationship with that girl, my beautiful Elena. A few years later, I asked her father for permission to marry her and he accepted. With my new wife at my side, I carved out a position in the small town as a farmer and a well respected one at that.

At the time, nothing had seemed strange. To be sure, I looked younger than a man in his twenties should, but not too far. I assumed that it would pass in time. Regardless, I chose to ignore that and instead focus on my wife and my newborn son, Siegfried.

All of that changed in 1096.
