We all know that the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991; however for some reason I feel like it would've made more since if it collapsed in 2000. What do you guys think?

The context of its survival matters a lot. Did hardliners take control and briefly put down dissent? Did the USSR survive as a tighter nit version of the CIS, Communist (and unified) in name only? Something in between?
