WI: Sonic '06 killed the Sonic franchise

I'm sure that we all know Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. Known for it's glitches, long loading times and a romantic relationship between a hedgehog and a human princess, Sonic '06 caused significant damage to the franchise's reputation, and has painted Sonic as a laughing stock in the eyes of game journalists and critics.

But what if Sonic '06 killed the Sonic franchise? How would that happen? How would Sega do without the speedy blue rodent as their mascot? Who will be the new mascot of Sega? Could Sega find a way to bring back the blue blur?

Sega would be bankrupt and cease to exist...or get bought by microsoft or EA :p

If ya want something more optimistic, then Sega would pretty much retool towards more mature games like Yakuza and finally make a goddamn vritua fighter 6.

If that killed it, maybe Sega could try to make either Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Chao, Chris Throndyke or Shadow their new mascots....

If not bring back either Ristar or Alex Kidd...

Or create a new mascot franchise.

Butterflies...WI Sonic the fast food drive-in chain sponsored the "Sonic" movie, and the movie was so bad that the backlash drove them into Chapter 11 and reorganization?

That's a good question of whoever replaces Sonic the hedgehog; Without Sonic The Hedgehog backs Sega up, Sega becomes bankrupt after Sonic 2006 failed.

So what replaced SEGA as a Company?

This simply isn't possible. Sonic is too big a brand to just disappear. I mean, OTL already showed that: Sonic '06 flopped but that didn't stop Sega from three more Sonic titles the very next year, plus Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Even if '06 is somehow even more of a disaster (a tall ask), the likely outcome is that Sega decides to play it safe with the franchise for a few years — an earlier Sonic 4, perhaps — rather than abandon it entirely.

Sega doesn't have all its eggs in one basket. Even if Sonic were suddenly off the table, they have other franchise, and more importantly, other businesses. Their arcade and pachinko division makes them more money than their video game division, IIRC.

14 November 2006
Sonic the hedgehog 2006 gets released for the Xbox 360 to widespread negative reviews and very disappointing sales only making 60 thousand 974 in sales thereby causing sega to go belly up and the sonic the hedgehog franchise going on life support or even just being put down having just heard about this in Japanese newspapers Yuji Naka starts to wonder weather or not a blue hedgehog‘s creation was a good idea or not

I honestly don't think anything can kill the Sonic brand. It's actually unique in how many bad games can be made for it, that would've killed any other brand, but Sonic with its broad appeal and ever-loyal fanbase just keeps soldiering along.
