For want of a more eloquent description, here's a version of Donald Trump's cabinet if he were trying to be a serious politician.
President: Donald Trump
Vice President: Chris Christie
Secretary of State: Bob Corker
Secretary of the Treasury: Ben Bernanke
Secretary of Defense: Stephen Hadley
Attorney General: Pam Bondi
Secretary of the Interior: Cynthia Lummis
Secretary of Agriculture: Susan Combs
Secretary of Commerce: Peter Thiel
Secretary of Labor: Peter Kirsnow
Secretary of Health and Human Services: Ben Carson
Secretary of Housing & Urban Development: Bob Woodson
Secretary of Transportation: Elaine Chao
Secretary of Energy: Robert Grady
Secretary of Education: Gerard Robinson
Secretary of Veterans Affairs: Leo Mackay Jr
Secretary of Homeland Security: Pete King
Best Case Scenario (for the country) Trump Appointments (Basically, Trump decides to be a serious politician, and is even considerate to Democrats by appointing has-beens like Harold Ford Jr., or soon to be has-beens like Heidi Heitkamp so that way any attempt against his Presidency by Republicans uncomfortable with him will be pretty impossible since anything against Trump would be seen as a boon for Democrats.) (The classic tactic of protecting yourself from removal by making sure that any potential replacements are unpalatable.)
Christopher James Christie
Born: 6 September 1962 (Newark, New Jersey)
Party: Republican
Member of the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders (1995-1996/1998-2001)
Member of the New Jersey General Assembly (1996-1998)
U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey (2005-2009)
Governor of New Jersey (2014-2018)
VP/Attorney General/Secretary of Commerce/White House Chief of Staff (2017-6 January 2021) (Basically, Trump offers Christie the same thing he offered John Kasich, he can run the country, while he spends four years giving rallies. Christie accepts, and knows that the more Cabinet Secretaries/Federal Appointees there are, the harder it'll be to wrangle them together if he needs to get around Trump, and so is willing to risk a potentially cataclysmic Saturday Night Massacre if Trump gets truly displeased with Christie or the people he selects on behalf of Trump.)
Acting PotUS (8 May 2017-6 January 2021)
PotUS (6 January 2021-20 January 2021)
Tulsi Gabbard
Born: 12 April 1981 (Leloaloa, Samoa) (ITTL, Samoa is united and independent, just a little treat for me. She's still a natural-born citizen since her mom was born in Indiana.)
Party: Democratic
Hawaii State Representative (2002-2006)
Honolulu City Councilor (2001-2012)
Class 3/1 Senator from Hawaii (17 December 2012-4 November 2014/3 January 2017-20 January 2017)
U.S. Representative from Hawaii (2015-2017)
Secretary of State/Defense/Veterans Affairs (2017-2021) (Much like with RFK Jr., this is
NOT an endorsement of recent views, just Gabbard as she was seen back then.)
Mary Kathryn "Heidi" Heitkamp
Born: 30 October 1955 (Breckenridge, Minnesota)
Party: Democratic
North Dakota State Auditor (1984-1988)
North Dakota Tax Auditor (1988-1992)
Attorney General of North Dakota (1992-2000)
Governor of North Dakota (2000-2004)
Class 3/1 Senator from North Dakota (2011-20 January 2017)
Secretary of the Interior/Agriculture/Energy (2017-2021) (The other Democratic option for Energy was Manchin, and I'd rather
not.)
Gary David Cohn
Born: 27 August 1960 (Cleveland, Ohio)
Party: Democratic
Secretary of the Treasury/Director of the Office of Management and Budget/National Economic Council (2017-2021)
Kelly Ann Ayotte
Born: 27 June 1968 (Nashua, New Hampshire)
Party: Republican (2003–present)/Independent (before 2003)
Class 3 Senator from New Hampshire (2011-2017)
Ambassador to the United Nations (2017-2021) (Least bad of the initial 3 options. I also considered Ivanka because it's funny.)
Charles Duane Baker Jr.
Born: 13 November 1956 (Elmira, New York)
Party: Republican
Secretary of Health and Human Services (2017-2021)
Harold Eugene Ford Jr.
Born: 11 May 1970 (Memphis, Tennessee)
Party: Democratic
Representative from Tennessee (1997-2003)
Class 2 Senator from Tennessee (2003-2015) (He deserves the career boost, ya know?)
Secretary of Transportation (2017-2021)
Frances Mary "Fran" Fragos Townsend
Born: 28 December 1961 (Mineola, New York)
Secretary of Homeland Security/Director of National Intelligence (2017-2021)
David Harold McCormick
Born: 17 August 1965 (Washington, Pennsylvania)
Party: Democratic (before 1996)/Republican (1996–present)
United States Trade Representative (2017-2021)
Robert E. Grady
Born: October 1957 (New Jersey)
Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection (2017-2021) (The least insane/corrupt person on the list, and his wiki article is like a small paragraph. Seriously, his wiki article doesn't even have the city he was born in!) (EPA should 100% be a Department,)
Janet Louise Yellen
Born: 13 August 1946 (Brooklyn, New York City, New York)
Chair of the Federal Reserve (6 October 2009-6 October 2021) (I genuinely wonder what the economic recovery would've looked like with Yellen at the helm of the Fed. Say what you will about her, at least she doesn't have the conflicts of interest Bernanke had, and that her wiki article mentions that she's a "dove" on monetary policy, and that she's a full-on Keynesian, which was
sorely needed in 2009. Plus, anyone who argues for eliminating the debt ceiling is alright in my book. Would love to have that conversation sometime.) (ITTL, she's replacing either Roger Ferguson or Larry Lindsey; would love to hear their pros and cons.)
Joseph Isadore Lieberman
Born: 24 February 1942 (Stamford, Connecticut)
Died: 27 March 2024 (aged 82) (New York City, New York)
Party: Democratic
Connecticut State Senator (1971-1981)
U.S. Representative from Connecticut (1981-1983)
Attorney General of Connecticut (1983-1991)
Class 1 Senator from Connecticut (1995-2007) (Lieberman
sucks, so Lowell Weicker gets an extra term, and Ned Lamont's career gets a nice jumpstart, hope he still becomes governor ITTL!)
Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (23 July 2019-27 March 2024)
Lisa Oudens Monaco
Born: 25 February 1968 (Boston, Massachusetts)
Party: Democratic
Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (23 July 2009-23 July 2019)
(What I mentioned before about Obama's Cabinet.) (Christie pulls out Section 4 of the 25th Amendment when Trump tries to remove Monaco from office, and due to outrage over Trump's interference in an active investigation, and Republican donors reaching out behind the scenes to Republicans to stand down means Congress votes to declare Trump incapacitated. Monaco stays, and when her 10 year term's up, Christie names Lieberman since the main reason he's Acting President is because of them, and it's not like he's ever gonna be the Republican nominee after that stunt. Lieberman serves for life. Jan 6 still happens, but Trump's impeached and convicted that very day and removed from office, making Christie the shortest serving President of all time, though has held the powers of the office for nearly the full term. Very much a Resist Lib/Never Trump Republican wet dream, but it's nice to think about as the best of a
terrible situation.)
(Obviously this also comes from a TL where Democrats roll Nat 20s all the time downballot, which is a nice thought.) (By that I mean anywhere from 60 seats to even a 81-18-1 Senate after the 2016 elections at the extreme with some
real good Democratic nominees like Kathleen Sebelius, Janet Napolitano, Tom and Christie Vilsack, as well Jay Rockefeller deciding not to retire, and Tom Daschle making a comeback.)
