The Alternate Cabinets Thread

May I suggest Rudy Giuliani for Attorney General instead of Pataki (or DHS could work but I don't think Pataki would accept an appointment from Trump), Rob Portman for Secretary of Commerce instead of Jeb (no way he'd accept a job from the guy who beat his brother), Howard Dean or Jim Ramstad for Secretary of Health and Human Services, Al Sharpton for Secretary of Education, John Hagelin for Secretary of Energy, and Max Cleland for Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
How about Charles Stenholm?

How about Ray Metcalf?
Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

For want of a more eloquent description, here's a version of Donald Trump's cabinet if he were trying to be a serious politician.

President: Donald Trump
Vice President: Chris Christie
Secretary of State: Bob Corker
Secretary of the Treasury: Ben Bernanke
Secretary of Defense: Stephen Hadley
Attorney General: Pam Bondi
Secretary of the Interior: Cynthia Lummis
Secretary of Agriculture: Susan Combs
Secretary of Commerce: Peter Thiel
Secretary of Labor: Peter Kirsnow
Secretary of Health and Human Services: Ben Carson
Secretary of Housing & Urban Development: Bob Woodson
Secretary of Transportation: Elaine Chao
Secretary of Energy: Robert Grady
Secretary of Education: Gerard Robinson
Secretary of Veterans Affairs: Leo Mackay Jr
Secretary of Homeland Security: Pete King

I don’t think he would go with Pam Bondi if he was trying to be serious. She had legitimate conflict of interest problems that would torpedo her nomination in my opinion (she would just look like a trump lackey). I think if he was trying to be serious he could go with Paul Clement or Brian Sandoval.

I also think he already had a few “serious” people in his cabinet IOTL. Purdue at Agriculture, Mattis at Defense, Mnuchin at Treasury, etc were all solid choices that I may not have agreed with but were certainly qualified for the roles.

Rockefeller should be Secretary of the Treasury. HW Bush was on the House Ways and Means Committee and was the first freshman on it since 1904 so he could be a good Secretary of Commerce before he enters foreign affairs as a later Secretary of State or National Security Advisor. Daniel J. Evans would make a good Secretary of Energy later on due to his environmental policies while as Governor of Washington, and so would Wally Hickel (OTL's Interior Secretary). John Volpe would make a goof Secretary of Transportation (he was IOTL). Barry "I'd Nuke Vietnam" Goldwater as Secretary of Defense sounds like a nightmare, though Curtis LeMay would be another chaotic choice for some reason he sounds more realistic, especially if he didn't join Wallace's campaign (I believe he was just meant to be a placeholder until Happy Chandler accepted, which he didn't IOTL, though I may be thinking of Ross Perot's 1992 running mate James B. Stockdale). John Tower would make a good Secretary of Defense (I believe he was nominated by HW Bush in '89 but was the first cabinet member to he rejected by the Senate and Dick Cheney got the job).

I think Max Cleland (D-GA) or Bob Kerrey (D-NE) would make the most sense for VA.

I think Shirley Ann Jackson would make sense for Energy given her service as Chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

I would say probably someone like Jack Lew or Leon Panetta or Ron Kirk would be best for Trade Rep.

For UN Ambassador I could definitely see someone like Sam Nunn or Colin Powell.

Also what role would Ron Klain take?

I’m going with Kerrey since Cleland is in the middle of his term and the Senate is split 50/50 with the Democrats only having a majority because of Lieberman in the Vice Presidency. Meanwhile, Kerrey is an outgoing Senator so he would be free for the position.
I think Shirley Ann Jackson would make sense for Energy given her service as Chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Jackson has a long history as a physicist and worked under the Clinton Administration so she would work nicely.

Ron Kirk just got re-elected as Mayor of Dallas the year before so I don’t know if he would want to leave that position at that point in time. Jack Lew is a good choice being the incumbent Director of the Office of Management and Budget and worked in several positions during the Clinton Administration so I don’t think he would mind being rearranged in the Gore Cabinet. Panetta would make a good Director of Central Intelligence in the Gore Administration.
For UN Ambassador I could definitely see someone like Sam Nunn or Colin Powell.
Powell was more friendly with the Republicans being George W. Bush’s top choice for Secretary of State (the position he got IOTL). Nunn on the other hand was a speculative candidate for either Secretary of State or Defense in a Gore Cabinet so I’m going with him as Ambassador to the United Nations.
Also what role would Ron Klain take?
After thinking about, it Klain is the obvious choice for Chief of Staff under a Gore Presidency. Daley was more of a speculative candidate at best anyway.

Thanks for the help!

Designated Survivor

(SOS Hillary Clinton was abroad during the 2010 State of the Union Address but since her location was known she could not serve as the Designated Survivor, that role instead going to HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. If an attack happened, though, Clinton still would have taken the reins as President as the most senior survivor)

President
: Hillary Clinton
Vice President: Tom Ridge (my thinking was that Hillary would want somebody who came across as strong and had experience dealing with homeland security. She might also want to throw a bone to the Republicans to show that her administration would work on rebuilding a government for all Americans, with an understanding Ridge would only serve until after the 2012 election)

State: Richard Holbrooke
Defense: Wesley Clark
Treasury: Larry Summers
Attorney General: Deval Patrick
Interior: Sally Jewell
Agriculture: Brian Schweitzer
Commerce: Terry McAuliffe (is it a Hillary cabinet without him in this role?)
Labor: Robert Reich
HHS: Howard Dean
HUD: Shaun Donovan (continued from Obama)
Transportation: Jane Garvey
Education: Jim Hunt
Energy: Shirley Ann Jackson
Veterans Affairs: Claudia Kennedy
Homeland Security: Raymond Kelly

One nick pick is that Holbrooke died in 2010. I assume his health wouldn't be well enough for him to accept the position of SecState.

I had considered that, but he died of an aortic dissection (tear in his heart) and from what I can tell there wasn’t any warning to his condition. If it had been cancer or something I would have agreed but since it was just a random occurrence I don’t see a reason for him to turn it down.
