Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli - is an Italian politician and philosopher, one of the most famous leaders of the Florentine Republic and one of the progenitors of Italian nationalism. Originally a supporter of Savonarola and head of the Council of Eighty, he later defects to Piero Capponi and receives the position of Prior of Foreign Affairs. Under Piero Sodereni, he headed the Priory of Military Affairs, and in fact became the “shadow leader” of the republic. Through his efforts, a regular army was formed, the management system was centralized and streamlined (in particular, the Council of Eighty was dissolved, and the government was formed exclusively by the Grand Council), and anti-corruption measures were taken. After Soderini's death he was elected Gonfaloniere, and retained this position for five years after his death.
