A poster for
Batman Forever (2025). With the Riddler and Two-Face now in the mix, I am taking a lot from Reeves' and Nolan's interpretations, respectively, with some mix of the plot from OTL Batman Forever.
It's been months since Gotham's criminal empire nearly imploded after the death of the Penguin, Oswald Cobblepot. It survived, but some prominent figures have been arrested, like Carmine Falcone (John Turturro).
Batman defuses a hostage situation, before the hostage taker reveals themselves to be a scarred Harvey Dent (John David Washington, reprising his role from the first film), now going by the name Two-Face. Flashbacks reveal that he adopted this name after being scarred by acid thrown by Falcone at Falcone's trial, and he got driven insane shortly afterwards due to the extent of his injuries.
Shortly afterwards, news breaks that the Mayor of Gotham has been murdered before the upcoming election (which will play out like the one in The Batman), by a yet-unknown figure, who is dubbed the Riddler by the media after leaving a coded letter and a riddle at the crime scene —
What does a liar do when he's dead? He lies still. Batman recovers a USB from the crime scene, which he discovers contains thousands of images showing the depth of corruption in Gotham following the death of the Penguin. He visits one of his associates, psychologist Chase Meridian (Amanda Seyfried) who diagnoses the Riddler as psychopathic.
Bruce Wayne and Chase visit a circus and watch the performance of the Flying Graysons, when suddenly, Two-Face reappears with a bomb and threatens to blow up the event unless Batman surrenders. Its youngest member, Dick Grayson (Javon Walton) manages to throw the bomb into a nearby river, but his parents are killed by Two-Face. Now orphaned, Bruce invites him to live over at his mansion as his ward (which will serve as a contrast with the Riddler's treatment later on). While there, Grayson manages to learn about Bruce and his crime-fighting persona Batman, and reveals that he wants to fight crime and defeat Two-Face. Bruce persuades him not to become a vigilante for now. Later on, Batman visits an old nemesis—the Joker (Barry Keoghan)—in Arkham Asylum. While not revealing much, he gives Batman the necessary clues to find out who the Riddler is.
The Riddler, now revealed to the audience as Edward Nashton (Paul Dano), views the attack on television and realizes that Dent, having been a public official before becoming Two-Face, may provide better insight that he needs before exposing the corruption in Gotham. He goes up to Two-Face, who has also committed a murder spree (using his iconic "flip a coin" method) and proposes an alliance, with the two sharing information with each other on how the criminal underworld has impacted Gotham's most elite, even the Wayne family. Nashton and Dent vow revenge on Bruce Wayne, the latter for not helping him during the acid attack, and the former for the Wayne family, who abandoned the orphanage he grew up in despite promising to implement an economic support deal (
much like the 2022 version). Batman infiltrates another one of the Riddler's crime scenes, but is nearly killed in the process before being saved by Grayson.
Batman visits Chase, who explains that she has fallen in love with Bruce. He reveals to her his secret identity. The Riddler and Two-Face, having discovered Bruce's identity after discovering a series of correlations between the "two", blow up the Batcave, shooting Bruce and kidnapping Chase. As Bruce recovers, he and his butler, Alfred, deduce that Nashton is the Riddler. Bruce finally accepts Dick as Batman's partner, Robin.
Days later, mayoral candidate Bella Reál (Jayme Lawson) wins the spot of Mayor. On the night of her election, as her supporters gather in an arena to celebrate, Nashton hijacks the screens to display what he has dug up on Gotham's corruption. While still in shock, the Riddler's henchmen (teased throughout the film with numerous livestreams by the Riddler) and Two-Face begin gunning down the crowd, before Batman manages to intervene and defeat each one of them, while also clearing out the arena to prevent further injuries. Nashton appears, and unveils 2 hostages: Robin and Chase, strapped onto one of the roof parts, and ready to be dropped at a moment's notice. Batman distracts Nashton with a riddle, before cutting both down and letting Chase escape with Robin. Two-Face stands up, and determines their fate by flipping a coin. Batman throws identical coins at him, causing him to stumble and fall to his death. He apprehends Nashton, who is admitted into Arkham Asylum. While there, a defeated Nashton meets with the Joker, who promises him that "Gotham loves a comeback" before laughing.
Chase remarks on Nashton's goals, before leaving. Batman and Robin continue their crime-fighting together. There is a brief post-credits scene for this one, where a figure is shown working inside a super-chilled laboratory, and then we see a woman suspended in a glass chamber. It becomes clear that this is meant to be Mr. Freeze, as it cuts to black.
