The mob would be reborn after a group of ex panthers, Vietnam vets, and gangs united in New Orleans to stop the Italians and Irish mobs from kicking them out of the city. The mob would be lead by the commission. The mob itself is more or less a confederation of different gangs who pay “tax” to the federal system. The gangs would and still have some codes like no woman or children unless it can’t be help. Keep it on the down load. Loan sharking most be managed by higher ups, to actually protect their protection rackets. They would bribe and murder there way to controlling most of the drugs supply in the south as well as control of the Iron Pipe line of illegal gun running.

What no Lincoln Clay?

I'm betting plenty of uptime Swedes wondered how the heck did the Prussians manage to develop the technology before them.

Indeed :D

Of course, it does play into the most important lesson of any ISOT story. Down-timers are not universally stupid. While they might not have the same knowledge as up-timers, there'll be plenty who if they get hold of anything from up-time, that'll send their minds onto new paths and they'll come up with things that the up-timers didn't think of. So, while someone like the Kiefel character might not have thought of steam engines OTL...once they know that the things exist and what the basic principles are, they'll get to innovating...

Where stupidity can come into it is in nations and leaders actually being willing to make use of it to the maximum. ITTL, following the Displacement everyone wants to advance technologically. But the thing is, when a nation develops like that, it leads to changes to the social order. So we get a divide: countries that are willing to accept at least some change for the chance to grow stronger; or countries who just want the new guns and steam engines while keeping their societies frozen, not realising that that's basically impossible. And in this divide...the countries willing to accept change are going to be the ones who win. No question about it.

It probably wouldn't be to far out of the question for the Anglo-Prussian's to develop it into something like the following somewhere down the line.

Indeed they could...and I like that photo :D Thanks!

Also it does raise the question if automobiles have taken off downtime by the Three Years War or even beforehand. Thanks to the development of steam engines and pieces of uptime knowledge. With it starting with something similar to the Quadrovelocipede from Legend before advancing into something like the Doble steamers and other steam cars from the turn of the century.
Starting out as this...

Before turning into this...

I like those :D Might steal...

I can definitely say that automobile technology would have taken off by the Three Years' War. Probably still something used by the more well-off members of society (though you wouldn't have to be super-rich), but definitely there together with trains.

Something which probably caused him no shortage of grief...:openedeyewink:

XD True!

True dat! There's also different degrees and types of change that will inevitably happen in this new world caused by the Displacement. A few nations in the minority will be embracing changes in full force, those who only want the fancy tech without changing the status quo and those in the middle who are willing to accept SOME changes making up the majority. Alongside different types of changes with some rulers enacting what would otherwise be progressive infrastructure projects while ignoring democratic movements or using uptime knowledge to create their own personality cults.

No matter how you cut it the world's been changed forever, new ideas have appeared earlier alongside a faster industrial revolution. Most places might not be immediately affected outside of Europe but they will be in the decades that follow, just look at the Planter's Rebellion.

Indeed they could...and I like that photo :D Thanks!

Go ahead...

I'm betting it won't take too long for an enterprising downtimer to figure out how to produce steam cars on a sizable scale with the existing downtime industrial base, become the Henry Ford of the post Displacement world. Who'd probably be someone from either England, Prussia or the Colonies.

Though he might have made a nice bit of money on the side thanks to it.

Land of Confusion:
Genesis

Flag of the Republic of Texas

With the nuclear exchange and end of the world that was a few survivors upon the blasted surface managed to survive and perserve at least semblance of their old ways. Those people were the cowboys, descended from the ranchers and cattle farmers who managed to survive the fires of Armageddon. Taking their herds and fleeing into the countryside on horse back, with legends telling of desperation races to outrun the black rain and great battles against desperate bands of survivors. Growing into semi-nomadic clans in the years that followed, living a lifestyle reminiscent of steppe nomads of Eurasia and ironically the Indians of old, the fabled six shooters and winchesters of their ancestors replaced by iron bows & arrows.
darius-kalinauskas-conceptart-environment-abandoned-overgown-cowboy-train-weapon.jpg

All of this would change however when the Sanctuaries of Eastern Texas opened their bunker doors over seventy years ago. With the first of these new settlers expanding into neighboring ghost towns, that had long since been left abandoned to the elements. That would soon come into contact with the various cowboy of the neighboring Prairie regions with early attempted raids being halted by a hail of gunfire and explosives by the Neo-settlers. It quickly became apparent to many of the Texan cowboys that it would be more beneficial to trade with these strange new People's, exchanging salvaged materials, cattle and animal hides for mechanical tools, medicine and the occasional firearm.

Eventually the two groups began to mingle as members of the various "Cattle Clan's" found themselves settling in to the newly emerging townships. While the neighboring various Ranch Keeps found themselves flourishing from the introduction of technology, medicine and crops from the Sanctuaries. Though it wouldn't be until nearly twenty years after the first openings of the Texan Sanctuaries that these two groups would truly come together in the First Raider War. When both groups began facing serious incursions by displaced raider bands from the North East, it would be at this moment in history that the fate of the Texan cowboys would be changed forever. When representatives from the McAllen Clan asked to join the budding Texan Congress in hopes of better defending against the invading raiders. Gradually several more of the "cattle clans" would join under the banner of nascent Texas Republic before driving out the invaders.

Since then the Texas Republic has grown into an expanding power with ambitions of uniting all of the Texan wastes under it banner... bringing them into direct conflict with the Holy Friars in the West. With their capital of New Dallas being the most populous city in the region, boasting a sizable neo industrial district churning out newly manufacturered products for the first time in centuries. Though with the more traditional cattle clans that had joined the Republic instead of being subsumed or displaced by its expansion having significant clout in the Senate.

With several boom towns having risen in recent years on the western Frontiers in recent years based off of the salvage extraction industry. Many of which also tend to cater to less "reputable" Industries with many salvagers having to go somewhere to spend their hard earned coin.

Unfortunately, to our knowledge only three of the witches (2nd and 3rd to the right, and 2nd to the left) seen above would live into the 21st Century, with the rest dying to the First World War, German Civil War of 1918 - 1919, and the Spanish Flu.
