Peshawar Lancers Redux; Australia and New Zealand

The AUSHAW shipyard was hiring more workers creating a boom for the economy of Melbourne.. With the new contract to build a carrier the yard had a lot of openings and there were workers from New Zealand who were applying for the jobs. The yard was expanding so as to be able to move forward.

The AUSHAW Shipyard had completed the first two large cruisers armed with 12" guns and had delivered the one to the Royal Hawaiian Navy and one to the Royal Australian Navy.. It had already begun work on the Canberra and on the aircraft carrier.

In 1958 the AUSHAW Shipyard hard received a contract to build the Hawaiian Navy's first super carrier the HHMS Polynesia. It was the largest ship ever to be built in the yard. Estimates were that the ship should be finished by August 1963. But it march 1960 talks were entered into the building of an even bigger carrier which would be Nuclear powered. The reactors would be built in Hawaii and shipped to Australia. It was estimated that it would be completed by September 1968.

In 1963 the Royal Australian Navy removed the HMAS Canberra from the fleet. The large cruiser with 12"/50 guns was removed from active service as a cost saving measure. It's sister ship the HMAS Australia was retained on active service. The Australian Parliament was debating the construction of a Polynesia class carrier for the Australian Navy. It would be like the Polynesia conventionally powered and not like the two follow up ships HHMS King Kamehameha III and HHMS Charles Bishop which would start construction in 1964.

The AUSHAW Shipyard was busy building warships for the Australian and Hawaiian Navies. The Australians were building a slightly smaller version of the Royal Hawaiian Navy's Polynesia class carrier. It would be conventionally powered as Australia wanted to keep the cost down. The Nuclear powered HHMS King Kamehameha III was completed ahead of schedule and was turned over to the Royal Hawaiian Navy. She would undergo sea trials and if there was no problems would then return to Hawaii.

The Australian and New Zealand Prime Ministers left to attend a meeting with Prime Minister Nufro who had returned from his trip to Asia. The Australian leader was eager to nail down an agreement to jointly produce a new destroyer class for the Royal Hawaiian , Royal Australian and Royal New Zealand Navies.. It was also part of a plan to agree on weapons that all three countries would use.

The three Prime Ministers agreed to the construction of a new destroyer which with some modification would serve the needs of the three countries. Most of the ships would be built at the AUSWAW shipyard in Australia. Australia worked with Hawaiian companies such as Mark Randolph Engineering to develop the engine. The gum was a new 6"/60. The Hawaiian Navy would be buying 18 ships,Australia would buy 8 and New Zealand 4.

Bubble gum?

The new 6"/60 gun would give the destroyer a better ability to provide gunfire support to any threat whether it was hostile ship or gunfire support to forces ashore. The gun was a massive improvement over the 6"/47. New Zealand however was going with the 5'?54.

Prime Minister Mary Elizabeth McNamara of Hawaii arrived in Australia with the Hawaiian Secretary of Defense and Chief of Naval Operations. Discussions would be held with the Australian Prime Minister and the President of the AUSWAW Shipwyard .Much would be settled regarding future construction and Jobs in Australia

The meeting between the three Prime Minister did clarify the production at the giant AUSWAW Shipyard. Hawaii would not be ordering another of the Giant Nuclear aircraft carriers for the time being but One carrier would be returning to the yard for some improvements and refueling

The Hawaiian Prime Minister reached an understanding with the New Zealand and Australian governments regarding ordering Naval ships and submarines. They also reached and understanding on standardization of weapons as well as joint training.
