Domniyi Defenses, 2011.png

The future seems dark for Dumriya.

The small principality, nestled among the lower foothills of the Mount Lebanon range, is almost entirely Dumri and Shi'ite, with smaller Druze populations. All in all, the country's population comes out to 865,000. With such a small populace, she only gained independence through the support of Romnia, her much larger cousin across the Eastern Mediterranean, who sold the DKHZ, her dominant political-military party, tanks, planes and small arms on the cheap, as well as sending large groups of 'volunteers' to help her. As the DKHZ was fighting a rebellion against the rouge state of Lebanon, it was relatively easy to win and after a two-year long war of independence (1959-1962) she became internationally recognized and entered free association with Romnia. For the next fifty years, things were good (as long as you were a Shi'ite or Druze Dumri)

But then Romnia drew the ire of the UN and was invaded by a coalition in 2011. Dumriya was spared the assault but, with her sister state occupied, found herself suddenly alone. Her two neighbors, Israel and the Syrian Federation, both want her land (The Israelis want it as a buffer zone against the Syrians, while the Syrians want to regain all of Old Lebanon's territory) and are both much larger and stronger than Dumriya. Damascus, only two hours to the north-east, has begun to move forces towards the Beqaa Gap, while the IDF has begun to move armored units and planes to positioning bases along the border.

The Saroraya, Lash Zargari, has declared martial law and mobilized all reservists and equipment available. The draft has been re-instituted, and new recruits are being rushed through boot camp. With no hope of aid from the Romniyi, Dumriya must face down her neighbors alone. The people are filled with resolve but even with the will of the people against the outsiders, it's doubtful the country will still exist come 2015.

Second Byzantine Empire is the last remnant of the Napoleon's Continental System. It was founded in 1810 on the remains of the Ottoman Empire in Europe with the Western Emperor's brother Jerome Bonaparte as the basileus Hieronymos I. When in 1816 France fell under the onslaught of Britain and Russia, Byzantium chose to cross over to the side of the victors. Not wanting to return the Turkish yoke, the winners allowed Byzantium to live. And so again, the Eastern Roman Empire survived the fall of the west.

The Empire is divided into three crowns: Greece, Bulgaria and Albania, which have a fairly large autonomy. Each has its own senate and representative in the Grand Senate. In theory, Second Byzantine Empire is a dualistic monarchy where the power is divided between the Basileus and the Grand Senate, but in fact all power belongs to Grand Vizier and Basilissa as the Grand Senate is too weak and Hieronymos I isn't interested in ruling the country.

Now everything is peaceful, but diversive population, turkish revanshists and local imperialists can cause problems. It is unlikely that anything will happen with the viziership of Ali Tepelenjotl, but the future for Byzantiom is indeterminately.

Comrades, joyous news arrive from across the Pacific Ocean: after the withdrawal of American imperialist forces from East Asia, its imperial ambitions broken by, among other factors, the fierce and permanent resistance of our workers' movement, weakening its foundations of aggression from within, our comrades of the People's Republic of China, led by Chairman Jiang Qing, have at last liberated the island of Taiwan from the warlord regime of the Chiang Dynasty, abolished its decadent American puppet state and fulfilled the War of Liberation started by Chairman Mao and the Chinese People's Liberation Army. The American forces in the counterrevolutionary island were taken as prisoners of the anti-imperialist campaign.

With Taiwan liberated, the comrades of the People's Liberation Army joined forces with the Korean People's Army, led by Supreme Leader Kim Il-Sung, Father of the who advanced against the reactionary forces occupying the south of the Peninsula, now without the support of their American overlords to defend them. Seoul fell within days, and, in a glorious triumph, the workers of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea rose up against the decadent ways of the Korean bourgeoisie, the taint of American decadence that permeated their entire society, and rid their land of the deviant ways of capitalism and bourgeois excess. After the fall of Seoul, the victorious People's Army started its Southern March, liberating the workers of Daejon, Daegu and Busan, the largest cities in the south, and purging with their full support the oppressive decadence of the Korean bourgeoisie and the remaining elements of American cultural degradation upon the Korean people.

Today, the last pockets of resistence of the reactionary regime in the South, abandoned by their American patrons, are falling. Soon Korea too will be unified, and joy will reign for a thousand years in Asia. A thousand flowers will blossom as the decadence of capitalism is cleansed from the face of the Earth.

And now, comrades, I say to you, it is time that, inspired by the great triumphs of our Asian comrades, and taking in our hearts the lesson of Chairman Mao, that we too continue the struggle to defeat the imperialist beast once and for all. Imperialism doesn't sleep; it doesn't rest until it either takes over the Earth or is killed by the people. Today is the day to ensure it is the latter. Today is the day to march against the forces of oppression. Today is the day to destroy America!

So... My idea was to do a reverse Autumn of Nations, with the United States's alliance being the one falling. I didn't want to get too into why exactly that came to be, so I'm going to avoid having to answer that question, but I left some clues around. Anyway, after considering a few different places, I found the poster that serve as frame for the map and I liked the idea of making a poster-map with those elements so much that I went for Korea.

Then... I went on a dark turn. I do that a lot, now that I think about it. Basically I just thought that this poster needed to be done by just the absolute worst type of tankie group out there. And considering it depicted a North Korean invasion of South Korea, there was enough room for that. So, if all the mentions to "excesses", "decadence" and whatever else make you feel uncomfortable, it's because you are supposed to fear the worst in those. I didn't flesh out the Worker Emancipation Coalition entirely, but they're there to represent the very worst among that particular specter of politics.

Anyway, I hope you like the map. May it terrify you as much as it does to me.
Partition of Laos
(From: the Kaiser, the Tsar and a Springtime Revolution)
MOTF Partition of Laos wip.png

The History of Laos was fairly similar to OTL until the Second World War despite the First World War being fairly different from OTL. The first year of WW2 did not touch Laos much but in 1940 the Imperial Japanese Army seized northern Vietnam and Laos while Dutch forces in the East Indies managed to force the French invaders back and were invading southern Vietnam and Cambodia. In July 1940 the Actionist French State would convince the Empire of Japan to make peace with the Entente turn on the Allies. French Indochina (including Laos) would be transferred to Japan as protectorates. Rest of the Second World War was largely uneventful for Laos other than the Indochinese Expedition Force that had been sent to aid the Japanese Army in the western United States.

1946 saw the failed Chinese invasion of Indochina in the Second Sino-Japanese War of 1946. The autumn of 1947 had seen the start of communist revolts across the Japanese Empire. Peoples Republic of Laos was established in 1950. The communist government of Laos survived until 1980 and the beginning of the decline of the Union of Britannic Syndicalist Commonwealths. Laos therefore had enjoyed relative peace and quiet for 30 years. After a referendum the new capitalist/democratic had been established as a constitutional monarchy. While the (communist) Democratic Republic of Cambodia became the (capitalist democratic) Republic of Cambodia the (orthodox Marxist) Socialist Republic of Vietnam became the (Chenist*) Social Republic of Vietnam. Cambodia and Laos joined the Indian lead Association of South Asian Nations soon after their democratization for protection against the Chinese and the Vietnamese. Laos became more prosperous during its existence as an Indian client with the help of free market capitalism and protection of the Indian military.

In 1995 ASAN's military/political side got dissolved. The economic side of the organisation continued existing. Indian military left Laos (and other ASAN members) but promised to send military help to any ASAN member which requested it. Laos lost the support of its great power backer in 2014 with the start of the Indian Civil War. This year saw the Sino-Vietnamese invasion of Laos which was followed a month later by Cambodian invasion of Laos (at the time Cambodia was run by a far left party). To the request of help from Vientiane, New Delhi replied that they would be glad to help as soon as they were done with their civil war. Lao government realized that they wouldn't get that help soon-ish. Thailand gave some help to Laos but it didn't prove enough. Burma's intervention into Laos 3 moths after the Cambodian invasion sealed the deal for Laos. The Thai army intervened in Laos "to protect the Lao people from communist aggression". After Thais took Vientiane and evacuated the royal family and the Lao government to Bangkok Bengal offered to mediate between the four nations that invaded Laos (Bengalese insurgent government hoped to use this as a way to gain official recognition from 4 nations including one nuclear armed great power). The Calcutta Conference laid out the borders in the Partition of Laos as can be seen in the above map. Bengal managed to use the recognition they gained to first become an International Concord** observer member and also became the first large insurgent group in the Indian Civil War to agree to a peace in 2018 (discounting the two year earlier surrender of Chenist Militants to the Indian government). After the peace agreement Bengal (officially Republic of Bengal and the Northeast) became a full member of the IC but has not, as of 2020, joined ASAN.

After the Calcutta Conference the Thai government offered the Lao royal family, cabinet, parliament and escaped military force a choice. The choice was to either disestablish the Government in Exile of the Kingdom of Laos and they would return to the Thai portions of former Laos. The politicians would be allowed to join Thai politics, the military officers would be offered a pension and a commission in the Thai military with equal rank if they wished, while royal family would be allowed to live in the palace in Vientiane and receive a generous pension. Or to keep the government in exile alive but moving to Jakarta in the ASAN member state Indonesia, with the possibility of moving to India after the end of the civil war there. The royal family, majority of government and majority of military accepted the generous Thai terms and became citizens of Thailand. A not insignificant portion of both the government and military did not accept it and left for Jakarta. This group formed "the National Movement for the Liberation of Laos" and the "Provisional Government of the Republic of Laos in Exile". They would gain more members as nationalists and patriots from non-Thai controlled parts of Laos escaped/emigrated to Indonesia. This competing government poignantly did not recognize Bengalese independence as of 2020 and remains in operation in Jakarta despite invites from India with the end of the civil war.

From “A Child’s History of Gallia”

“Chapter Three: The Four Princedoms

“The origins of the Four Princedoms lie in the early fifth century AD, when Imperial troops withdrew from the province of Britannia, and much of the Western Empire was falling under the sway of Germanic tribes. While many Britanno-Romans remained to face the raids of Germanic Saxons and Hibernian Scoti, others chose to migrate across the Narrow Sea to parts of Gaul still under Imperial control. Of course, the Empire’s grasp was weakening there as well, and soon the Britanno- and Gallo-Romans were cut off and surrounded by the Visigoths, Burgundians, Franks, and others.

“Around 458 AD, a man named Aegidius was named commander of Roman forces in Gaul. He proved to be a clever leader as well as a skilled soldier. He forged an alliance with the Britanno-Romans, defeated the Burgundians, and convinced the Franks to aid him against the Visigoths. Taking advantage of the respite in Gaul, he sent help to the Britanno-Romans who remained across the Sea.

“In 476, Odoacer deposed the Western Emperor, and declared himself King of Italy. When Aegidius sent emissaries to the Eastern Empire, they were rebuffed, and the Eastern Emperor chose to recognize Odoacer instead. The Empire had fallen, but Gaul and Britain remained Roman. To reflect this, Aegidius decided not to take the title of “king,” like the various Germanic warlords. Instead, he called himself princeps - the first Prince of Gallia. Other Britanno-Roman and Gallo-Roman leaders followed his example.

“When Aegidius died in 480, his son Syagrius succeeded him. Syagrius continued in his father’s footsteps, holding off the Franks, and aiding the other princes against the Saxons and Visigoths. His descendants reigned over Gallia for hundreds of years.”

So the POD here is that Aegidius doesn’t die in 464 AD, and instead of Syagrius’s short-lived Kingdom of Soissons, we get a somewhat longer-lasting Roman successor state in Gaul and Britain. It’s not as neat and tidy as the map or the narrative above might suggest - more a veneer of Roman culture and titles over a Roman/Celtic/Germanic composite, and there are conflicts between the princedoms as well. However, the Merovingians are butterflied into comparative obscurity, and the region on both sides of the Channel develops its own cultural identity. (A big part of that ends up being religion - a sort of monastic, insular Christianity takes hold here, while its Germanic neighbors, including the surviving Saxons, end up adopting the Arian variety.)

A few centuries later, all of this gets taken over by a Visigothic Empire centered in Spain, but the former princedoms retain some nominal independence, and the ports along the channel become important trading centers for the empire. When that empire eventually falls (caught off balance by Berber invasions to the south and a new wave of migrations off the steppe), a number of the Channel ports become local centers of power - sort of a cross between Renaissance Italy and the Hansa. Some centuries after that, a “Gallian” nationalist movement unifies it all again, and that is the source of the work quoted above.

(I hope the quality is alright)

The Corday Estates were settled by the Havlings (derived from the Old Orkish word Halfling) who came from the North, beyond the Elvish Realms, to settle at the end of the Long River, and facilitate trade. After malevolent spirits attacked the convoy, the Havlings, or Faes as they call themselves, took refuge in the on the Lights Hill, where they found an Ork military camp. An alliance was forged between the Havlings and the Orks, the Orks would protect the Havlings, and the Havlings would feed and equip the Orkish garrisons on Havling territory and trade Orkish Goods with the Elven Realms and the Havlings of the North.

The Estates were made a monarchy under the leader of the expedition, Madame Émeline Corday, first Queen of the Corday Estates. Cordial relationships between the Havlings and the Orks allowed the Estates to purify the Land from the malevolent spirits who used to populate it, and the country was made green again, thanks to the agricultural might of the Havlings. A first town was created: Havlinburg in Orkish, or Fort-des-Faes in the language of the River's Elves. The Westernmost fortress of the Orks, Westeld, became a guarantee of safety for the Havlings. It was under the monarchy that the Estates created themselves an identity, distinct from the Northern Faes, and started talking both Orkish and Elvish fluently.

After Anne-Louise de Corday, sixth Queen of the Corday Estates, passed away, leaving only a young toddler as heir, power was gradually devolved to the mayors, until the Queens of Corday weren't crowned anymore and simply styled themselves Ladies of the Havlings (or "Dames des Faes", in the Elvish). The Ladies moved from their old fortress in Havlinburg to a new, smaller residence in Rosange, that arose from the fusion of La Roseraie and Léssange. In that time, trade prospered and the Ghilliedh, the Elves from the Woods, engaged in peaceful relationships. The second biggest town in the Estates, Havres, was created during that period, in order to facilitate trade on the Sapphire Sea.

But this era of prosperity ended after a century, when the Orks, without further explaination, closed the doors of the Great Hall, their capital city under the mountains. Soon, Riverside, once the second city of the Orks, was abandonned, and even Westeld, that used to be this symbol of sisterhood between the Orkish and Havling people, was left to decay. Today, Captain of the Légion des Postes Charles Cerisay, has announced his Légion would assure the security of the Estates from Westeld, renamed La Capitainerie, until the Mayors have organized an independent army to protect the roads from bandits and wild beasts. The current Lady of the Havlings, Camille Corday, has sent an embassy to the Northern Havlings and the Elvish Realms up the river, to request support in these dire times.
