Miscellaneous >1900 (Alternate) History Thread

Random scenario--Let's assume for whatever reason, there is a fascist Britain in the early-mid 20th century, perhaps after a long series of setbacks like a defeat in the Great War, a bloody struggle against Ireland, socialist/trade union violence at home, and the discrediting of the political class. Would it make sense for them to create an elite unit akin to the SS or MVSN who wore red (outside of the battlefield obviously) as a tribute to the redcoats? I know that certain British (and other Commonwealth) units still wear red on parades and formal occasions, but this would be for pretty much every occasion they aren't expecting to be shot at much as the SS and MVSN wore black.

One could imagine anti-British sentiment in the US (i.e. Irishmen) would play heavily to the idea that the redcoats are back.
In general, the adoption of a particular color by a military or paramilitary unit is often based on a combination of practical considerations and symbolic associations. The color red has a long history in British military and political culture, and has been associated with the British army since the 17th century, when soldiers wore red coats as a means of identification. If a fascist British regime did choose to adopt red as a tribute to the redcoats, it could be seen as a way of invoking a sense of national pride and military tradition, and presenting the regime as a continuation of British history and values. However, it could also be seen as a provocative gesture that would invite comparisons to the past actions of the British Empire, and potentially fuel anti-British sentiment among certain groups, as you have suggested. Ultimately, the adoption of a particular color by a military or paramilitary unit would depend on a variety of factors, including the specific ideology and aims of the regime, as well as practical considerations such as the availability of materials and the need for camouflage or visibility on the battlefield.

So they adopt a "Light Red" to show they still have connection to the older British Empire but are of a much lighter hand.....
(And yes, that's a "Red versus Blue" joke :) )

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me find biographic information on Yuan Shikais grandson Yuan Jiarong. So far all I know is he was the eldest and I think only son of Yuan Keding, he was born in 1904, died in 1996 and appears to have been educated in the US. If anyone can point me at a source where I could find more I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

What if Britain (for whatever reason) had adopted primogeniture during the reign of Queen Victoria? The line of succession would have had her daughter Victoria inherit in 1901 (who died in the same year), so at that point, the next in line was William II (of Germany).

If they had adopted absolute/gender neutral primogeniture... there is no way any kids for whom it would apply would be permitted to marry anyone even close to the Line of Succession for any other crown (especially of a state with Great Power aspirations*) without explicitly renouncing their place or getting the spouse to do so.

(*: At the opposite end, a postage-stamp tier statelet and/or one already a protectorate/client state may squeak by if the new Crown Colony is not too much of a geopolitical headache)

If the German Kaiser does somehow inherit the British Crown? At best, Parliament would make things quite clear about who is actually running things while offering someone who dislikes such a chance to locate a more amiable sibling... from there it ranges from recalling the William&Mary precedent to outright Republicanism.

Hello all. A couple of MCU PODs
- Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man goes through. It’s a major hit instead of middling.
- Joss Whedon doesn’t wholesale quit the MCU.
- Sony does not provide the rights to Spider-Man to the MCU.
- Ike Perlmutter stays in charge.

What made the Russian Army of WWI so vulnerable to mutiny? It seemed like that army was constantly in danger of falling apart/collapsing under its own weight?

Well, they were poorly fed, poorly armed and every time they faced the Germans in battle, they were comprehensively defeated. In the circumstances, mutiny seems the most rational response. To modern eyes, it is more surprising they fought so well for so long. Also bear in mind, this wasn't a problem unique to the Russians. The French Army mutinies began in April 1917, the British mutinied at Etaples in Sept. 1917, the Italian Army collapsed at Caporetto in Nov. 1917. Clearly after three years of war, with no end in sight, all armies were feeling demoralised.

And of course, this also applied to the Central Powers too. In many ways, the Allied victory in 1918, was a result of a loss of will on the part of their enemies. Suddenly, after years of stalemate, there were a string of victories on the Western Front, in Italy, the Middle East and the Balkans, that seemed to come out of nowhere.

more of an alternate future question but following a complete societal collapse how long do you think it would take for the people in D.C. to establish a cult around George Washington?

Alright, got a late 2001 PoD idea for a timeline of a different War on Terror and 21st Century.

9/11 happens as per OTL, as does the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan but let’s say Ahmad Shah Massoud survives the assassination attempt against him in September 2001 and once the U.S. invaded Afghanistan he throws his full support behind this, eventually made interim President of Afghanistan until free democratic elections can be held (in which he wins).

In December during the Battle of Tora Bora, U.S./Coalition/Northern Alliance forces are able to eliminate Osama bin Laden, either due to being killed in the bombing or the 800 U.S. Army Rangers General Franks did not deploy OTL were instead deployed to Tora Bora and bin Laden was killed in a shootout.

Other things that would happen would be:
-Bush having a crazy high approval rating for longer
-No War of Iraq, potentially with the U.S. nabbing bin Laden so soon this resulted in a less knee jerk USA. Instead of war, more sanctions and CIA assets to try and overthrow Saddam Hussein.
-Bush is assassinated in his second term, either by the Tbilisi assassination attempt or potentially when visiting a country where radicals kill the president, one he didn’t visit in mid-2005 OTL but does here due to butterflies.

Thoughts?

What would be some wider consequences of the Cultural Revolution not happening? The immediate effect on Chinese society is obvious, but this could have some other implications. Maybe Mao would be more willing to talk to the US? Less Chinese aid to North Vietnam? The Cultural Revolution turned a lot of people against Mao, so people like Deng Xiaoping wouldn't gain as much influence. If China didn't have Deng's economic reforms, Japan would have likely remained as the manufacturing powerhouse, and maybe the effects of the Lost Decade would be mitigated.

Well, there is just a few issues. The Japanese reeeeeeeaaaaaallly damaged most of the European grip in Asia, so either the Japanese didn't manage to go that far or one of the colonies became self governing and sufficient.
Issue is...why would they claim independence? The British before WW2 weren't exactly anti apartheid schemes.
Back on this idea, I got how you can do that.
Americans in 1858 or later downright invade Japan to have a foothold in regards to China. So Japan becomes an American Colony like the Philiphines, and in the eventuality, they just form the same kind of organization that sprung in Rhodesia.

It is one way it could be done while dismissing the 'Japanese Empire' on the background.
