What if....a group of the Samoyedes (e.g. the Selkups) (together with some Tungusics) migrated - together with the Magyars - to Europe during the early middle ages?
The republic of Qumbia (qum: Qumbemöb) is a country located in the north of the Balkan peninsula in Southeastern and Central Europe, situated at the crossroads of the Pannonian Basin and the Balkans. It shares land borders with Hungary to the north, Roumania to east, Bulgaria to southeast, Albania to the south, the Adriatic Sea to the southwest and Croatia to the west.
After belonging to the Ottoman Empire for centuries, the country gained independence in 1851.
After World War I, during which Qumbia stayed neutral, Qumbian-speaking areas in eastern and southeastern Croatia were ceded to the country - including the littoral city Ráguza. Also (mostly) Qumbian-speaking areas north of the cities of Čöröbörd and Šéravár were ceded from Hungary to Qumbia via the treaty of Trianon and further agreements with Hungary.
During World War II, the country was part of the axis powers. After the second world war, Qumbia turned into a typical communistic dictatorship, the People's Republic of Qumbia. After the death of Jožif Cüreŋi in 1976, the country recieved reforms and got opened to the western market. Plus, the country distanced itself from the Soviet Union and started to build its own way to socialism. After massive protests in 1981 and 1982, further reforms were made and the state's leadership granted democratic elections. In autumn 1983, the first democratic elections since 47 years were held and the country turned into a democratic republic.
In 1998, Qumbia became part of the EU and in 2004, the country joined the NATO. In 2011, a plebiscite about if Qumbia should adopt the Euro were held. The Qumbian people denied relative clearly.
The Qumbian language is a Qumbo-Samoyedic language and belongs to the Uralic language family. Qumbian is relative distantly related to Hungarian, Finnish and Estonian.
The modern Qumbian language is the result of many different influences on the old Qumbian language from other languages. Most and strongest influences come from (medieval) Hungarian and other Ugric languages, as well as Turkic (Chuvash). Iranic (mostly Alanian) and Tungusic (Evenki) influences are also strong, but a bit less strong. Medium strength influences come from Slavic, Romance and some Fenno-Permic languages and lower influences come from Ottoman Turkish, Greek, Albanian (Gheg), Thraco-Dacian, ancient Mongolic, Armenian and recently from English. Even lower influences come from Russian, German, French and Arabic.
Although Qumbia belonged to the Ottoman Empire for centuries, the Qumbian people never got really islamized. Today, 36% of the population of Qumbia belongs to the Roman-Catholic church, 17% are Orthodox christians, 8% are members of Protestantic churches (mostly Calvinistic and Lutheran), 37% are atheists, agnostics or irreligious. In the Qumbian society, religion doesn't play a significant role (anymore). Most christians are rather "christians on paper" than really religious.
Most people of the (already) small minority of muslim Qumbians moved to the Ottoman Empire between the 1870s and 1910s. The last of them left the country during the early 1930s towards Turkey and Albania.
89% of the population of Qumbia are ethnic Qumbians. Minorities are (christian) Albanias in the south - in and around Škadára and Lomparad, Bulgarians in the southeast and east - east of (and excluding) Nüšas, as well as Hungarians in the north - right in close proximity to the Qumbian-Hungarian border. All these three minorities have semi-autonomous areas. Smaller minorities are Armenians, Croatians, Italians and Roumanians, as well as to a very low level Sinti and Roma.
Most ethnic Qumbians outside of Qumbia live in eastern Croatia and in southern Hungary, both close to the border to Qumbia.
Until the end of World War II, there was a relative large minority of Germans in the country, but after the war was over, the Soviets forced Qumbia to expell all Germans from the country.
