The Planet of the First Makers: What if the Great Dying was caused by intelligent Therapsids?

In 1964, paleontologists and geologists working in South Africa’s Karoo Basin made an earth shattering discovery- unmistakable artificial plastic objects within unaltered Permian strata. When announced to the world some two years later, the debate on the veracity and implications raged for more than a decade. But soon, a tsunami of evidence confirmed the shocking truth: Humanity came second. Archaeomunitor Sapiens (trans. “Wise First Maker”) were the first sapients to walk Planet Earth.

Emerging at the very end of the Permian, the Gorgonopsid A. Sapiens- or the First Makers- somehow surged past their proto-mammalian cousins in their brain size and neural density. They found a young Earth- and over the course of tens of thousands of years built a mighty technological civilization upon its bounty. Nevertheless, their ruthless material exploitation of both the biomass around them and their planet’s resources strained the already unstable, hot and volcanic Permian Earth, and they contributed to the greatest mass extinction the planet has ever seen- the Great Dying, which wiped their world and themselves out.

Humanity still does not know what the First Makers called themselves- science has not uncovered convincing remains of their written language- nor do we know anything definitive about their culture. Nevertheless, although separated by 251 million years- we can find a kinship in our planet’s first thinkers. They gained mastery over their planet, despoiling the Earth to build wondrous cities of steel and concrete. They lived billions of lives, working, building, fighting, inventing, and one must imagine- loving their fellows and beholding the beauty of their planet and the universe. Only time will tell if we too will share the fate of Earth’s first thinking children.
Really interesting, if a bit depressing, very much like!

Question, given that fossilized quantum computer found in Arizona, is there more intact First Maker stuff in space? Also wouldn’t there be preserved examples of some First Maker writing on any artifacts found in space?

Obviously this is a very lovely map and concept, but I can't help but feel that it would have been better served as a an archaeological survey, or an excerpt from a textbook, then as a tourist pamphlet. The idea of a site having this developed of an archaeological park, while still largely not being surveyed or not having its records recorded and transmtted to other universities, seems rather unlikely. As does having this developed of an archaeological park, but only hundreds of visitors a year.
The paucity of visitors is what changed my mind about the same thing. So few people means so few people. In total. And one of the world’s most important cities being nothing more than archaeological ruin means… something like global thermonuclear war caused so few people. We’re post-reconstruction, bootstrapping the population back up, and they had to wait for radiation levels to go down enough to even get back here.

My MoTF entry. Not as good as the others and I doubt I can win, but here it goes.

It's not your fault that MotF has such amazing competition this time!
One nitpick is that the spelling alternates between Daquin and Daqin.

Is it supposed to be Rome? Why do they call it Daqin?

"Daqin" is the traditional Chinese name for the Roman Empire (and, to a lesser extent, the Levant, being the part of the Roman Empire closest and most relevant to China). This is the name used in the oldest histories (~100BC), though later (~700AD) the term most often used became Fulin.

Not gonna lie, this is one of the dumbest etymologies I've ever come across.

China during the tang dynasty called ancient Rome "Daqin" (great qin) because their might and splendour were "on par with the old Chinese Qin dynasty"

The Quantum computer was really kind of a fluke, most of the First Maker stuff on Earth has been chomped up beyond recognition by the forces of geological time- little bits of building rubble, microplastics, rocks enriched in artificial materials but not much else. That being said, space stuff is definitely more intact, and probably a majority of information about their technological culture is from space, although 260 million years of space weathering probably has fried most electronics and damaged many of the more delicate parts.

As for writing, the people in this TL are also as perplexed as you about the dearth of First Maker writing. Perhaps they wrote primarily with paints and other perishable materials which have disintegrated over time, or they were a fully digital species and everything was stored with massive hard-drives and server farms. It's likely we will never know unless more evidence is found.

The etymology is first attested [in Chinese] centuries after the name was coined; it's entirely possible that it's a folk etymology and that there's another explanation.

Zhang Binglin writing in the early 20th Century offered the explanation that it may have somehow originated from the word Latium, by way of a few thousand miles and a few centuries of linguistic drift.

Another name, Lijian, is also present in early Chinese literature on the topic - also of unclear etymology, though in my opinion it looks more similar to "Latium".

This is certainly idealistic ASB, but here's my (probably fruitless) attempt to create a "long peace" after WW1, like after the Napoleonic Wars.

Not mentioned on the map:
Less reparations against Germany (US gets their banks to lower the debts of France and Britain, US asks for less reperations on their part, stuff like that idk)
Demilitarized Alsace-Lorraine, as well as Rhineland
German and Austrian seats at the LoN with the hope of not diplomatically isolating them
Turkey/Ottomans do have more Middle Eastern land than IOTL
Karl remains the head of state for Austria, Hungary, and Slovenia

Immediately after the ISOT, confusion reigned. Initially within each time-zone life went on as normal. It was at the “borders” of the zones that differences were most noticeable. Railroads running stock of different eras saw crashes, Aircraft trying to land where there is no longer an airport or one from a different era. International communication was almost totally severed outside of the time-zone, how could you be sure who you were talking to.
Computers existed effectively only in North America and Mexico and not all of that. Denver and Salt Lake City with modern tech and a lot of the internet database still available led the way in keeping their zones stable but approached with different aims.

Union of Denver; [Originally 2022 TZ]
From it’s central position the Colorado Provisional Government made contact with the adjoining States. Either side were the 1960 TZ’s, too advanced to have much in common with their 1900 TZ neighbour, they mostly gravitated towards Denver. Alberta, however, found itself overwhelmed by its “ancestor” neighbours. Naturally some areas did not want to put themselves under the control of a more advanced State, after all, American history showed how that could play out.

Texas was the only State powerful enough to negotiate autonomy.

Zarahemia; [Originally 2022 TZ]
The Utah Government, based on Salt Lake City, soon grasped that an opportunity had been presented to re-create the Mormon State, adopting the name Zarahemia and allying with the West Coast States [later to become the Republic of California] fought a short pseudo-war against Denver, so pseudo that only 6 died before public pressure forced talks to be started, the Salt Lake Accord.
Lands of Mormon majority were excluded from Denver's control and the Mormon Exodus to Zarahemia began. Zarahemia would follow an isolationist policy.

Republic of California; [Originally 1960 TZ]
The West Coast States were initially in conflict with Denver and supported Zarahemia. Denver had hoped that the Salt Lake Accords would also serve to bring the west under it’s control but less than 6 months later two states combined to form the Republic of California, only Washington acceded to Denver. California found Denver’s Laws to be too Liberal for it’s taste.
California inherited the U.S.Navy forces stationed in San Diego and, as the Mexican Navy consisted of surplus, outdated, American ships, they dominated Pacific trade. Hawaii was captured but, as the islands came from the 1492 TZ, there were no facilities. Few were needed as most of the Pacific pre-dated this TZ.

Canadian Republic; [Originally 1960 TZ]
Canada had it more difficult than America with a single rail line from the east restricting ease of travel and communication. Alberta finding it almost impossible to gain dominance, turned to Denver, eventually coming to an accommodation giving them full parity. The coasts, however, maintained their independence, in the west the Government of British Columbia styled itself as the Government of the Canadian Republic, moving quickly to establish itself along the southern Alaskan coast [1900 TZ] despite the objections of Denver.
The Republic was able to project some sea power from Vancouver Island but the Republic worked hand in hand with California in exchange for trade in oil from the southern Alaskan oilfields.

République du Québec; [Originally 1900 TZ]
The Francophone population of Québec for some reason responded better to the new situation than the Anglophone establishing itself within the government in alliance with the large number of Eastern European immigrants . With no British Government worth the name Québec was tempted to join with the U.S.A but old differences kept them apart. Unable to defend them, the Northern Provinces were ceded to the central, Denver aligned, Alberta Government just days before it joined the Union of Denver.

Royal Shires of Newfoundland; [Originally 1840 TZ]
Newfoundland, traditionally independent of Canada [until 1949 OTL] refused Québec’s demand to join them, their remoteness allowing them to maintain independence secured later by alliances with the U.S.A and the Caribbean Federation.

U.S.A; [Originally 1900 TZ]
Despite its lack of regular troops, the U.S was well able to raise volunteer corps as needed [as it had done for the Spanish War] but, of course, training and equipment was woefully behind the mid-west, let alone Denver TZ. Even so some of the Southern mid-west States opted to join the U.S. The application of the U.S laws effectively re-imposed the Jim Crow Laws in those states. Within a year the southern states were in arms.

Union of New Africa; [Originally 1960 TZ]
Contrary to expectations African-Americans poured into the southern states that joined the U.S - to protest the re-imposition of the Jim Crow Laws. Many came armed, ready for trouble but, nobody knows which side fired the first shot of the Secessionist War 8AE [2030AD]. Under the generalship of Martin Luther King UNA forces were able to “liberate” the south and establish an Afro-American “homeland”.

United Mexican States; [Originally 1900 TZ]
One of the few larger countries to come through with its administration intact, only a few Provinces came from 2022 but Mexico made good use of the Tech from those zones.
10 months after the Event a Manila Galleon, the carrack Great Santa Ana was captured off of Acapulco carrying 2,000 tons of cargo. Loaded with rolls of silk, Chinese porcelain, Persian carpets, jewellery, medicines, rolls of Indian cotton cloth, ivory, spices [like cinnamon, clove, mace, and pepper], perfumes like musk and other exotic goods from China, it had set sail in a 1600 TZ. The cargo provided a massive boost to the Mexican economy and enabled investment into modernizing the State.

Mexico felt it needed to adopt an aggressive stance to defend it’s position against the Later TZ of Denver. Unwilling to take on the Northern giant, Mexico took advantage of Belize’s lack of colonial protection in 9AE [2031AD] also coming into conflict with Guatemala. This erupted into full blown war after a border incident in 14AE.

Federation of the United Islands of the Caribbean; [Originally 1840 TZ]
A Federation of European Colonies led by Jamaica and Bermuda[both 1900 TZ] formed as a response to pressure from the U.S.A and its client state, Cuba.

Enlightened Republic of Cuba; [Originally 1900 TZ]
Still under military administration after the U.S-Spanish War, American forces had only withdrawn after the Event. This left Tomás Estrada Palma to stabilize the situation. After his death in 8AE [1908 AD] the Liberal Party under Alfredo de Zayas y Alfonso took power, maintaining its ties with the U.S but pursuing an expansionist policy. Haiti had been the punch-ball for European and Local powers since Independence, freed, temporarily, of U.S restrictions by the revolt in its southern states but protected under their umbrella Alfonso moved in to “stabilize” the situation. The Republic of Dominica was also unstable, after gaining independence in 1844 it had asked Spain to retake control in 1861 only to rebel again two years later. In 18AE Dominica asked Cuba for it’s protection in order to gain U.S protection by extension.

2nd Federal Republic of Central America; [Originally 1960 TZ]
The original Central American Republic was formed as a result of pressure from Mexico in 1823, similarly, after the Event, negotiations were fast-tracked after Mexico made their Central American ambitions obvious. The formation of the 2nd Federal Republic in 19AE [2041AD] has proved to be a deterrent to Mexico so far.

Democratic Republic of Colombia; [Originally 1900 TZ]
Involved in a Civil War at the time of the Event, a dispute between Liberal Federalism versus Conservative Centralism. The Liberal rebels were expecting support from Venezuela but Venezuela was now 30 years behind Columbia and totally unprepared. The Liberal rebels were forced to flee to Venezuela. Centralists were able to prepare for their return but, even so, were caught unawares in 18AE [2040AD] when trouble flared again. Liberals, supported by both Venezuela and Mexican irregulars again failed to defeat the Conservatives but were not defeated. The war stagnated, in 31AE, exhausted by over a decade of fighting and, with the Conservative Government facing a right-wing rebellion in the south, a negotiated peace was reached. A Liberal state was created as a vassal of Venezuela, confusingly calling itself the Republic of Colombia.

4th Confederation of Venezuela; [Originally 1870 TZ]
Venezuela was only just over it’s own Civil War which ended in 1863 when it was plunged into conflict with Columbia. Although from an earlier era than Columbia, Venezuela was able to resist. During the 17 year peace it was able to strengthen it’s position, taking over the colonies set adrift by the Event and forging an alliance with Mexico. When it was strong enough it supported another Liberal revolt, backed by its Mexican allies. The war dragged on, after it ended, although Venezuela had gained a vassal it was no longer in a position to expand further.

Império do Brasil; [Originally 1776 TZ]
In the least advanced of the American TZ Brazil was, however, so large and unexploited that it had no real incursions from more advanced TZ.
Gold mining had become the main economic activity of colonial Brazil during the 18th century, used by Portugal, the gold was to pay for industrialized goods such as textiles and weapons since Portugal lacked an industrial economy. In Minas Gerais, gold was present in alluvial deposits, Gold extraction was mostly done by slaves using pans and other low tech instruments. The Gold industry brought hundreds of thousands of Africans to Brazil as slaves.
Apart from gold, diamond deposits were also found in 1729. Sugarcane plantations in Northeast Brazil and other areas also relied heavily on slave labor.

Whilst Brazil controlled internal areas from the 1840 TZ they were the least advanced areas of Brazil and so they only really evened up to the standards of the 1776 TZ. Brazil found itself rich in Gold, Silver and other products but with a much reduced market for them.
It came as a relief when, in 40AE, the government was approached by a Denver business to commercially grow rubber.

Republic of Ecuador; [Originally 1900 TZ]
So often during the Wars of Emancipation Ecuador was the battle-zone between Rebel Columbia and Loyal Peru. The Event forced Ecuador and Peru to come to terms over the disputed Provinces, generally with Ecuador giving way in the Amazonian Provinces. Both ignored Columbia’s claims.

Kingdom of Peru; [Originally 1900 TZ]
Dominated by a cabal of 24 families and, following a period of military control after the defeat in the War of the Pacific, Peru was the only Republic to become a Constitutional Kingdom. It pursued an aggressive policy as the restraining forces of its neighbours and international community no longer applied.
Ecuador was the first to suffer, unable to call on Columbia, enduring Civil Wars, Ecuador was forced to finally cede the disputed Amazon lands and lands around Tumbes.
Taking advantage of the Columbian troubles, in alliance with Venezuela, to annexe lands in the Cauca area, Peru was able to round out its claims to the Lower Amazon, the Aguas Amazónicas Peruanas.

Bolivia was 60 years behind Peru and, locally, just out of the War of the Confederation so, although Peru pressured them it did not try to annexe Bolivia but to bring it into line with Peruvian designs. Peru did not go so far as to support Bolivia’s claims for a coastline, preferring to support Chile against Rio to gain the Atacama, and negotiated a treaty partitioning Acre, gaining the Gold producing areas Bolivia was not aware of.

Bolivian Republic; [Originally 1840 TZ]
In 1839 Bolivia emerged independent from the War of the Confederation which re-established Bolivia. Unstable in the extreme, Bolivia now found itself bordered by a Peru 60 years more advanced but still expansionist. Despite ceding areas of Acre, weak government meant that it acted as a virtual vassal of Peru in order to maintain the rest of it’s lands.

Paraguayan Dictatorship; [Originally 1840 TZ]
Independent Paraguay was dominated by Jose Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia. His absolute rule cut off the new nation from the world. After his death in 1840, just after the Event, Paraguay, under Francisco Solano Lopez, became embroiled in local border wars against Brazil and Bolivia with barely noticeable results except the loss of Paraguayan troops and minor territorial losses.

Liga Federal; [Originally 1776 TZ]
The government of Montevideo or the political and military government of Montevideo was created in 1751, it had been merged with the Misiones Orientales, returned to Spain by Portugal, just before the Event. Always rebellious, Montevideo rejected Rio’s authority from the start.

Kingdom of Rio de la Plata; [ Originally 1776 TZ]
Originally the Viceroyalty of Río de la Plata, created by Spain from the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1776. So new that it had no sub-structures in place to govern from Colonia. Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and Chile continued to hold areas granted to the Viceroyalty by Spain whilst the Liga Federal was established from the Government of Montevideo, a rebellious Province.

The map shows the areas claimed within Rio and the majority control of those areas. Rio was effectively only the area that could be controlled from Buenos Aires.

Kingdom of Chile; [Originally 1776 TZ]
Also created by Spain from the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1776 Chile established close links with Peru. Unaware of the riches possible from the Atacama, Chile supported Peru’s claims so as to have a trading corridor with it’s 1900 TZ neighbour.
Many of it’s Provinces on the East of the Andes had been allocated to Rio by Spain in 1776, with the loss of Spanish authority Whilst Chile actively resisted the annexation it also maintained it’s claims to the entire Southern Cone.

that won't create a "long peace" but will just bring an earlier war through a quicker German recovery and slowing entante recovery

The only problem with that is Middle Chinese and in general, the "j" initial sound was closer to "ky". The shift towards palatalisation only began later and in the north, with Manchu influence. "Lijian" wouldve been closer to "Li-kyan" much like the modern name for Canada is "Jianada" while originally it was "Kyanada"

That Turkey-Greece border probably leads to immediate war as OTL.
