Probably the same way Germany got such an early lead in OTL WW2: luck and surprise plus dumb/overconfident opponents.

Also Russia making sure Germany can't safely focus on the western front.

    Fair enough.

Still kinda surprising given the immense logistical advantages Germany has at game start, unless it's idiotic enough to get involved in the Indochina revolt and send all its divisions to Vietnam.

German advantage at game start is eroded by the economic crisis.

Sure, but even then--France's best hope is that the Strasbourg uprising happens and sabotages the German war effort right there near the front.

There's a lot of ways France can get a lucky hit early on.

Wallonian uprising and quick French interaction would give them an opening the Germans didn't cover, for example.

    I have the same opinion.

For the good guys side I put João Mangabeira Brazil, really, he is maybe one of the few objectively good characters, here a small biography of him that I made for a friend:

You might know him for kaiserreich, but basically he was a lawyer who became a lawyer in first place as he wanted to protect the poor and opressed. In the 1920s he became famous for working for free and for his incredible memory, as he could detail every single event of the current or paste cases and even speeches. He converted to socialism, and I'm not saying social democracy, or center left socialism, he was one of the most openly socialist figures in the brazilian history that at the same time defended democracy. He officially dennounced the Soviet Union as a totalitarian state and preached that if people wanted socialism, they should vote for it. During the dictatorship of the New State he was arrested and released multiple times, every time he left the prison he already began to prepare some speech or newspaper publication attacking the dictatorship, and when questioned if this whole go into go out jail process wasn't ideal, he replied "I prefer to be jailed for being against this dictatorship than being free by ignoring it - and by doing that being a collaborator". He was freed for good in 1943 or 44, and created the PSB party (that is still alive and kicking, the candidate for governor that I voted, Márcio França, is from the PSB). He run during the cold war twice and then... the coup came. He died a few days after the coup before he could be arrested, and he was in the "List" of people to be caught, so at least fate prevented him from seeing our beautifull democracy being murdered.

I've also seen games where Germany had to beat all its puppets back into line, weakening the Pakt

The Brazilian integralists couldn't accept that there were still africans under the yoke of damned French occupation; that was too much; they needed to save these poor africans from that damned french REPUBLICAN control, and so they did

THE GLORIOUS BRAZILIAN EMPIRE CROSSES THE OCEAN TO FREE MALI, ALGERIA AND TUNISIA FROM THE FRENCH COLONIALISTS!

EXULTA Ó BRASIL NAS ALTURAAAAAAÁS! A AAH A AAH A AAH! EXULTA! EXULTA! EXUUUUUUUUULTAAAA!

Pretty good analysis in the comments of this thread on why the AUS is the most dangerous faction in the 2ACW; tl;dr Huey has jack shit going on except keeping Huey in charge and popular. At least MacArthur has an ideology, albeit a ridiculously simplistic and hyper-nationalist one straight out of Fallout.

Only if Huey get's out of power, yeah.

And what ideology does MacArthur has apart from anti leftism? He seems like a american Pinochet for me as he does not even create his own version of the congress, just control the existing one.

His ideology is Mandatory Patriotism. You'd better love America or you're going to prison for use as prison labor for a very long time. Yeah, he's horrible, but at least if he doesn't get assassinated he can restore some semblance of stability and plan for continuity of government.

Huey has NO plans for the future. No plans to repair the state long-term. He just wants to be Supreme Leader and the most popular man in America who the people vote for because he's both of the best choices (and only choices!) they have.

Of course Huey has plans for the future, Long therm plans for wealth redistribution, long therm plans for the building of a welfare state and also investiments in education. The one with no plans is MacArthur because he wants stagnation, so much that on the Darkest hour version of the KR (I don't know if this passed to the HoI IV version) as soon that MacArthur got assassination the country breaks apart in various cliques.

I would agree in the political sense but not in the economic sense, he does have his share the wealth program. Basically, try to push hat he did in Louisiana but with no one to stop him and would probably go further.

The infraestruture process too, he turned Louisiana from a backwater to the state with the best highways and railways in the south. He promoves a democratization process politically with the popular concils that he sets up allowing the people to have a direct rule on the government and he got his diplomatic tree to go with Mitteleurope or isolationism.

Sure his handouts keep things stable and he can pave the roads, but he sets himself up as dictator with no plan for replacement or succession. It's notable how literally all the options but Huey for the AUS are total shite; Business Plot are cartoon villains, Pelley is insane, and Earl is completely incapable of matching Huey's modicum of competence.

The business plot and Pelley are not even considered sucessors for Long; the first got purged if they do not manage to coup Long fast enought, something that happens most of the time; the later is even more unlikely since the own description of the event of the american legion says that the door is closed for Pelley so the player really must want him in power for Pelley to rule america. Furthermore, Pelley different from Moseley does not tries to coup the government of the AUS if you leave him alone and Long still purges him with the Destroy the Klan focus. To quote the tvtropes wiki:

"The leadership of Long after his triumph is very similar to the Brazilian populist president-dictator Getúlio Vargas. Thy are both authoritarian populists who allied with far-right elements against socialists and moderates in a multilateral power struggle for control of their country. Like Vargas, Long will purge the far-right as soon as their mutual enemy is defeated."

Now for his ingame possible sucessors, the event of the businness plot tells us a bit about the lore and how Long appointed his wife as sucessor, like Perón appointed his wife Isabel Perón as his VP. Earl get's power only if Huey is killed by Moseley and this ends being discovered. Since the gameplay most dies by 1948 it is quite open to find who would be the sucessors of Long, and because of that someone made this list below on the reedit:

Now imagine a sucession of Huey Long to Lyndon Johnson, that would be a ideal scenario.

Edit: I took a while to answer because this image was very hard to find.
Also, on the CSA route if you pay attention some events talk positively of Huey Long and his family, even with they being exiled. I don't know the right event to fire it and post a print but it is about Francis Townsend.

Yeah, and I'm saying that Vargas-style leadership is not conducive to long-term stability (and IMO Brazil is pretty lucky to have avoided total collapse after that disastrous asshole).

How is the new Federal government organized? Huey rules. How is the President elected? You can pick Huey or Huey whenever Huey bothers with an election. How is a transition of power arranged? Huey gives himself another term.

Without Huey, there is no AUS. Logically the Christian Commonwealth and Business Plot America should be nonfunctional at best and complete failed states most of the time.

Out of all the people shown on there, LBJ honestly seems like the one who would be able to capture Huey's charisma and passion almost perfectly. Hell, if he manages to take power in the AUS, he could even spin his Great Society programs as an extension of Share Our Wealth.
