Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. During his early political career, LBJ was very much against civil rights, and since the AUS’s support mainly comes from the South, trying to advance civil rights for blacks may be political suicide for Johnson.

I think Long does have an endgame, that being family dictatorship, based on the fact that Earl Long now succeeds him when he dies. Obviously it's not good, but he does have a plan to ensure stability that, IMO, would in the short term work. Of course, he still allies himself with very dangerous people and the AUS for that reason is still worse than even MacArthur; too much of a chance that someone worse than MacArthur would get into power.

Or not, since Huey Long already support civil rights, he might pave the way for Johnson to continue. I admit that Long is not a revolutionary and I admit that he is corrupt, but the march of time appoint to civil rights and he noticed that OTL and in the KR universe, so he might do it even if it is only for his popularity.

I wouldn't say Huey supported civil rights, he just didn't really comment on race like other Southern politicians at the time and his economic programs happened to also help blacks in Louisiana because it was politically advantageous for him.

Yeah, what I gather from Huey is that he doesn't give two craps one way or the other about black people, but Pelley screwed with him so he's gonna screw with Pelley right back.

Well, depending of which actor you are asking he might answer something different, I gonna quote wikipedia:

Based on this, my opinion is that Long didn't cared much about the racial issue, what he cared is to gain popularity and this process led to better living conditions for afroamericans.

I already proved that Pelley didn't wronged Long, Long moves against him regardless of his loyalty, he hates the Klan, he hates the far right.

It would seem like Huey actually wasn't the lone Southern politician who was halfway decent to black people. E.H. Crump, among others gave patronage to black people for their votes and political support. Earl Long- and maybe even LBJ- also fall into that category. Huey is just the most inspiring one because his message sounded the most economically radical, while not being outright socialist.

At the end of the day, mapgames are half textbook simulator, half storytelling device. So a balance can be made. I'd characterize Long as a self-aggrandizing opportunist who, while not straying too far from the prejudices of a man of his time and place, was fairly mellow towards African Americans. So given historical constraints, he won't be getting rid of Jim Crow directly or pulling an LBJ. On the other hand, for the purposes of story, we can imagine him doing things that we, the modern gamer, support, thus given him more moral strength.

I think he hates the far right and the Klan just as in real life because they're a bunch of ruffians who are dangerous to law and order and the stability of his regime. He also doesn't approve of genocide. But most white Southerners in that time period were likely the same- yet they accepted segregation just the same. Which is why I suggested those two aforementioned paths that Huey could potentially take in order to 1) enfranchise and empower black citizens and 2) break the back of the traditional (white supremacist) institutions.

    We agree on this.

Seems the Custom Country Paths mod will be abandoned after KR 0.9.3... as KR has integrated the mod and snatched the dev as a full coder for KR.

I'm ambivalent about this. On the one hand, that's some great coding! ON the other hand...I'm not sold on custom country paths. More entertaining to have a dynamic game tbh.

It's a nice addition, one that I hope doesn't become too popular though.
Going into a new playthrough and having no idea how things are going to go is part of the fun. It feels a little too much on the meta side going in knowing exactly what's going to happen and being able to plan around it. It's too orderly.
It's Kaiserreich, it should be chaos as soon as the ball starts rolling.

I thought leaving it as default would set it to be random? If not there definitely needs to be a random option.

Well, having the paths available doesn't prevent that from happening (in fact, in the other mod I frequently play, Equestria at War, setting the paths correctly is the ONLY way to randomize things), while at the same time leaving the option open if you want something to happen in a particular way, e.g. so that you can see something that never seems to happen in your games, or making it so that you have a very clear black/white divide between "your side" and "the other side," e.g. RadSoc/Syndie Internationale versus authoritarian Reichspakt and Entente, or democratic Entente versus Totalist Internationale, etc. It's also useful if you want to go in to try something out that depends on another country behaving "correctly," like the Treaty of Stockholm paths for the Nordic countries that require Norway and Sweden to go down particular focus paths.

    Yeah, it is. I know.
By getting popular I meant the fanbase actively tweaking their games from the start. Something that I think could have some weird consequences down the line if a particular option/scenario becomes so unpopular that the Devs ax it or maybe a particular course of events end up over-represented in the fandom, that kind of thing.

It's not the most likely thing, the biggest issue is just that it rubs me the wrong way.

Treaty of Stockholm, that's fair, but on the flip side I legitimately enjoy the tragedy of games where Germany goes socdem, all the puppets take the most democratic paths, the Internationale goes syndie or radsoc and they're all democratic states...pounding each other into rubble for petty reasons of flags and territory.

And hey, that's something you can also do with country paths, if they're implemented correctly!

Fair, but honestly...that kind of random tragedy hits a lot harder and feels more real when it happens organically. If I just rig everything for the Internationale to be shining beacons of light and the others to be totaltiarian crapholes, what's even the point? It's just me map-painting.

That's one of the reasons KR is so good. There are a huge amount of focus trees, which collide with each other to produce interesting and unpredictable results, something I really like in HoI4 mods.

Exactly. Dealing with the game as it develops is part of the charm. If you go in trying to get what you want it becomes an even bigger waste of time than it already is. (PDX games take up hours of life every session, it's not healthy)

    Edit:
Which is why I think the option to railroad the game is better as a dev tool, or a showcase.
