so there was this woman named elizabeth patterson bonaparte during the late 18th-early 19th century of america. and due to a whole bunch of reasons she ended up having a son that was napoleon’s nephew, from his brother. her marriage ended up getting annulled, though. regardless, she and her kid still caused a lot of talk, and she did get into contact with napoleon again later on.

and obviously, that kid of her’s never got close to the throne, mostly because he really didn’t want to, but learning about her got me thinking. what if he did? how would that impact relations between france and the us? how would the politics work? how well would france accept that? how well would the US accept that? how close would he even be able to get to being emperor?

From the napoleonic Imperial constitution, which, to be clear, is not truly legally binding on a restauration of the Empire, but it certainly heavily influences what Bonapartists will consider agreeable.

For those who can't decipher the French: inheritance is in the direct, natural (i.e. non-adopted, though there is an exception for N himself regarding the sons and grandsons of his brothers) and legitimate descendance, male to male, with eternal exlclusion of women and their descendance. More important for this fellow, Napoléon is mentioned, then his brother Joseph, then Louis, after which the grand dignitaries propose a new emperor to the senate, to be ratified in a referendum. Jerôme Bonaparte, the Bonaparte actually involved with Patterson, is pointedly not mentioned in the constitution. Given the timeline of this marriage (1803) and the imperial constitution (1804), Patterson might very well be the reason he is excluded in it.

So any claim by Jerôme junior would be very, very weak. His only chance is to be the sole male Bonaparte around (actually not a Bonaparte as far as French law is considered until NIII reversed NI's decision), politically talented and willing to move mountains to achieve the throne. Even then things are likely rather iffy. Maybe moving to France when NIII gets the throne and being a dedicated and loyal supporter of his cousin can help if later the Prince Impérial dies, leaving NIII without heirs.
