In many timelines you have the nationalists win the chinese civil wardue to 1945 going differently. For example not having america airlift nationalist troops into soviet occupied manchuria to be envircled by the chinese communists. This is what happened in "decisive darkness" I think.
Could the communists win the civil war if this does not happen, with the soviets only giving material support, and if yes, how?
 
To my understanding the Soviets only really provided material support during the war. Stalin in particular wanted to protect his position atop the Comiterm and saw Mao as a direct threat.

Mao wanted to invade Taiwan following the Nationalist withdrawal but Stalin refused to support the venture. Stalin on the other hand wanted Mao to form a unity government with the Nationalists instead of driving the Nationalists off the mainland
