In 1964, former Vice-Presidential candidate Henry Cabot Lodge stunned the nation when he won the New Hampshire Republican primary as a write-in candidate. For a time, it seemed that if Lodge officially entered the race he could beat Rockefeller and Goldwater in future primaries and clinch the nomination. However, Lodge declined to run. This sucked all life from his write-in candidacy, paving the way for the far right Goldwater win the nomination and forever transform the GOP. But what if Lodge had capitalized on his momentum from New Hampshire and directly competed in the primaries? Could he have stopped Goldwater in 1964, and if so how does this change the direction of the Republican Party and US politics?
