House Passes CFCEREA, Sends Bill to Conference.
The House of Representatives passed the Campaign Finance and Congressional Ethics Reform Enforcement Act (CFCEREA) today by a large margin. The bill will now head to conference, and is expected to reach the President's desk by early next week.
The Act, which is designed to both create new methods of campaign and ethics safeguards, and enforce existing laws on the books, has been heavily debated, as Senator Seth Randall of Florida filibustered the bill on the floor of the Senate. However, it passed the House with flying colors, with the entirety of the Democratic Caucus, 230 members, and 25 Republicans adding their support, for a total of 255-180.
The House version of the bill, called Robinson-Whitley after its' co-sponsors, Democrat Barry Robinson of Illinois and Frank Whitley of New York, is remarkably similar to its' Senate counterpart, Hunt-Kuhio bill, meaning that a conference committee will likely be short and agreeable.
