House Passes CFCEREA, Sends Bill to Conference.

The House of Representatives passed the Campaign Finance and Congressional Ethics Reform Enforcement Act (CFCEREA) today by a large margin. The bill will now head to conference, and is expected to reach the President's desk by early next week.

The Act, which is designed to both create new methods of campaign and ethics safeguards, and enforce existing laws on the books, has been heavily debated, as Senator Seth Randall of Florida filibustered the bill on the floor of the Senate. However, it passed the House with flying colors, with the entirety of the Democratic Caucus, 230 members, and 25 Republicans adding their support, for a total of 255-180.

The House version of the bill, called Robinson-Whitley after its' co-sponsors, Democrat Barry Robinson of Illinois and Frank Whitley of New York, is remarkably similar to its' Senate counterpart, Hunt-Kuhio bill, meaning that a conference committee will likely be short and agreeable.

Former Prime-Minister Graty opens the Colne Valley Rail link

Former Prime-Minister Maureen Graty today opened the new multi-million pound rail link between Alyesbury and Luton.
Graty who it is said managed to "get the trains to run on time" during her 3 year spell at Downing Street was a major supporter of the project which was first suggested back in the late 1980's. Work on the project started back in 2005 under the Graty Government.
Graty was joined by Transport Secretary Frank Cameron, as they travelled on a train from Aylesbury Parkway to St Albans City station. The route takes in the former Chiltern lines route to Rickmansworth before using the previousally under used link line towards Watford Met Station, before crossing the Rickmansworth Road at Baldwins Lane and joining up with the old Croxley branch line which has been re-opened. A New station has been opened at Ascort Road, as well two new station re-openings at West Watford, and Watford Stadium/Hospital. It continues on the re-opened line to Watford Junction before linking across to the former branch line to St Albans Abbey before a joing a new line to St Albans City station and on-wards to Luton. No stations have been closed and Watford Met Station which is run by London Underground is staying open, as well as running some trains to Aylesbury .
The whole route is being run by a new train company, "Colne Valley Trains".
"It is a great achievement" Graty told the opening "Its a fine day for public transport in this nation".

House Passes Immigration Reform, Bill to Head to Senate.

The House passed the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2011 today, with bipartisan support.

The Act would provide an extra $2 billion dollars in border security, namely improvements to the Mexican border. It also allocates another billion dollars to airports for security checks, as well as the possibility of another billion.

The Act will also set up a system in which college-attending immigrants with valuable skills would be set-up on a fast-track for citizenship, and would also "provide certain illegal and deportable alien students who graduate from US high schools, who are of good moral character, arrived in the U.S. legally or illegally as minors, and have been in the country continuously for at least five years prior to the bill's enactment." The bill also smoothes out many bureaucratic wrinkles, and cut down on costs within the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

The House passed the legislation 268-167, with mainly Democratic support, though some Republicans did vote for the legislation. It now goes to the Senate, where Majority Leader Robert Royce said that it will be taken up "with all promptness possible."

In Excerpt from Vanity Fair, Vinick Confirms Departure After Midterms; Offers Wide-Ranging Glimpse of Current Political and Foreign Policy Landscape.

In a brief excerpt from Vanity Fair, due next month, Secretary of State Arnold Vinick was trailed by Lisa Sherborne for two months, during which she conducted several in-depth interviews. One of the more interesting developments is Vinick's confirmation of a long-held belief: He will be leaving his post as Secretary of State after the 2012 midterm election, no matter what.

"It would be time," Vinick stated in the article. "Six years and two Presidents, I'm not going to be like Bush and just vanish, but I'm starting to look forward to some well-deserved rest and retirement. So, basically as soon as the next Congress is sworn in, I'm out."

Vinick, showing his well-known candor, also gave his thoughts on the Presidential election, winning the Nobel Peace Prize, and the state of politics today.

The piece will be released in next month's Vanity Fair, on shelves on the 20th.

Bravo Tim, bravo!

A few things, West and I decided that it was George Wirth, not Robert Starkey that's a class I senator from Montana. And Jasper Irving just resigned from his house seat to run for the senate.

Could we also have an updated list of the declared and potential candidates for the 2012 gubernatorial and senatorial elections, for both parties, please?

That's a little bit harder... once we get closer to the 2012 midterms, I'm sure it'll come up. For now, watch with interest in the 2011 gubernatorial off year elections!

Butcher Reveals That Wife's Ovarian Cancer Was "Misdiagnoses," Benign Cyst; Serioiusly Weighing Running for Senate.

Kansas City Mayor Collin Butcher announced in an interview today that his wife Loren was misdiagnosed with having ovarian cancer, and that he is still considering running for the Senate in 2012.

Loren Butcher was reported to have ovarian cancer during a routine checkup in March, and Butcher, recognizing the severity of that diagnoses, immediately ruled himself out of any Senate campaign. Sources close to the Mayor also indicated that he was even considering resigning in order to take care of his wife full-time.

"It was a very scary time," Butcher says. "We were prepping for chemo and surgery and meds, all of that jazz, and I was just determined that I was going to be there for Loren no matter what."

However, a second round of tests in April indicated that the earlier diagnoses was possibly incorrect, leading to a biopsy that revealed that Loren only had a benign cyst in one of her ovaries. It had presented with an odd manifestation, and the doctors had misread it as cancer.

"We were so relieved," Butcher says now, and it is evident on his face. "It was like we got this death sentence, and suddenly now, it's lifted. It truly was a miracle."

While the doctors confirmed that the cyst was not cancer, Collin and Loren celebrated, while not telling anyone, aside from their family, including their daughter Samantha and sons Alan and James, the good news. "It was hard not to just come out and spill everything," Butcher admits.

Even though the cyst is benign, Loren Butcher will have surgery in order to remove it sometime early next month.

Perhaps inevitably, the speculation will begin as to whether or not Butcher will seek higher office, such as the Senate seat that will be open in 2012. Butcher, however, refuses to look too far into the future.

"I honestly don't know what I'm going to do," he says. "A month ago, I was considering resigning from politics altogether, and now I'm being pressured about the future? It's all a bit fast.
It'd be a lie to say that it hasn't crossed my mind, weighing a run. But right now, my entire focus is on two things: Helping my wife recover and enjoying the time I have again with her, and running my city. That's it. What the future brings... I'll decide that when it comes."

"Besides," Butcher adds with a wry grin, "it's a year away still! Ask me again in 2012."

anybody ever start thinking about possibly doing a Politico 45 like the website does? basically just tracks the doings of the president daily or weekly? what does everybody think?

I think that we talked about it somewhat with Santos, and during the campaign we occasionally had daily, semi-hour-by-hour schedules (Lot of hyphens in there).

But as far as I can recall, there hasn't been anything like that proposed for Walken. It's seemingly as something comes up, post about it.

I'm seriously thinking about doing one for the Walken Administration even if there is nothing too extreme to mention I mean slow news day or not the President is working a 24/7 hour day

Willis to run for senate

Democrats have got to be happy today. Congressman Justin Willis (D-OH) announced that he would be running for senator August Adair's senate seat as the latter declared he wouldn't seek a fifth term. Willis, while being a staunch liberal, has a strong bipartisan record and a mixed party background. He voted in favor of the President's healthcare plan and the stimulus package, but voted against his education plan and TARP. His mother was a civil rights activist and was the house democratic leader in the 80s, while his father was a non-partisan republican in congress.

"America is broken. Partisan politics has made what was once an honor among the American people something that is despised by the American people. To serve the people as a representative was once the noblest of occupations in this country, but no more. We must work together to bring this country together, that is the only way we can move forward as a single American nation. And that is why I am running for the US senate seat, right here in Ohio. We can do this, we can change the way things work in Washington."

This makes Willis the first democrat to enter the race, and the 38 year old polls well against other potential democrats. On the Republican side, big names are currently sitting on the sidelines. Like state secretary of state and dynasticrat Dylan Garrison, who is confusing people by talking about national problems, yet has no fundraising whatsoever. However, millionaire film maker Anderson Cano has announced, and has plenty of money on his own. He is a fairly straightforward party-line kind of guy, but as the child of illegal immigrants from Peru, he's very liberal on immigration. In polling between the two, Willis and Cano are tied at 41.

IL-10 faces a three-way race

In the race to determine a successor to retiring congressman Jasper Irving (R-IL), who has decided to make a move for the senate, the wealthy suburban area north of Chicago faces a three way battle.

The candidates? For the democrats, youth in revolt backed public defender, Rajiv Nehru has sped past establishment pick, state treasurer and former investment banker Charlotte Hayes for the nomination. Key YIR fundraising efforts have pushed him over the top, and Hayes was forced out of the race today. He's also been strongly helped out by big-name party players like Governor Andrew Cordy, Lieutenant Governor Alex Sweeney, along with YIR superstars like Alex Minolli.

Republicans have had no trouble in landing a candidate. Arch conservative state senate minority leader Richard Andrews was selected when his potential opponent, Irving speech writing aide Samantha Roberts, was engulfed in a sex scandal, with fellow Illinois congressman Austin Cohen (R-IL), when it came out the two had cheated on Roberts' husband together. She dropped out thereafter while becoming engaged to Cohen.

But with such a strong force on the right end of the republican party, more moderate members decided to back the libertarian party in this race. Former Republican congressman - turned Libertarian state party chairman - Roy Flagg. The republicans in the district are fare more fiscally conservative and socially moderate/liberal than Andrews, and it's not really a surprise. Flagg represented the district from 2000-2008 when Jasper Irving took it. He's decided to run for the seat again, only with a different party.

However, Flagg is not just drawing supporters from Andrews, Nehru is seeing more moderate democrats in the district float towards Flagg, forcing him to moderate on some issues. Flagg played a big role in the education battles with the Bartlet administration, and has based a lot of his campaign on education. Flagg and Nehru are neck and neck in polling, sitting at 39%-39%, with Andrews trailing in third with 16%, and 5% undecided. The official primaries are next Thursday, a peculiar day, June 9th, before the actual special election on July 7th.

Alabama Governor Discovers Shocking Relative
June 3, 2011

Kimsey, pictured here in 2007 while a senior executive at ABC, was "surprised" to hear of his relative

The Governor of Alabama, former businessman Stock Kimsey discovered last week that he's related to another famous politician.

Kimsey, who was adopted, released a book last year on his life, which detailed his birth mother's tragic history. A group of internet bloggers discovered that Kimsey's birth mother, Italian immigrant Leah Caldini, who ran away from her home in California in 1946 at the age of 16, is actually the great aunt of former Pennsylvania Congressman Stephen Collins.

Here is a chart of the relationship:

Leah Caldini would later spiral into a dangerous world of drug addiction after giving up her child, born to an unkown father. Kimsey was later adopted by a banker (Albert Kimsey) and his wife, who were otherwise unable to conceive children. He wrote in the book how he only met his mother one time, when he was 8 years old and she looked him up. He says at that point she was "too far gone" and would be found dead two years later in Jacksonville, Florida.

Leah Caldini was the youngest in a large group of children to the Italian Consul Roberto Caldini, who famously requested asylum in America at the onset of World War II. Caldini's oldest son, Stefano, served in the US Navy and perished in that conflict. His daughter would marry Californian lawyer (and later politician) James Wiles Collins. They were the parents of Stephen Collins, who you may remember from running for Senate last year.

Collins and Kimsey had met once before, at Jimmy Hobuck's funeral in 2010, but they were not aware of their relationship. This was revealed by bloggers "connecting" the dots last month. Kimsey was never aware of his natural grandparents or any of his birth mother's family sans herself. Since then Kimsey and Collins, who currently works for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, have met and discussed the matter. They will appear in a special on 20/20 to be aired later this month.

Pennsylvania sees wide open races

In the coming midterm elections, and in all midterm elections really, states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan, all midwestern industrial states, are key to judge the national average mood. That is why in the prelude to midterms, it is always interesting to watch races develop in these states. Democrats and Republicans are going to be duking it out in the senate and gubernatorial races that the state will have. Top-tier candidates are emerging from everywhere on both sides, deeply confusing the race.

In the gubernatorial, incumbent governor Michael Kellner has finally announced to the state that he won't be seeking a second full term. Clearing up a potential damaging primary with young congressman Matt Claussen announcing a run for it anyways. There's been talk that state senate majority leader Tagg Morrison, who is seen as a potential better fit with the state and his pro-life, anti-gay rights views, will run. Whoever wins there will face undoubted Republican nominee, senator Morgan Mitchell. The senate announced that instead of running for another senate term, he'd run for the governor's mansion instead. He is seen as the favorite at this point.

In the senate race, republicans already have a heated battle on their hands. Former TV star Carlin Cassidy made a surprise entrance into the race in what was supposed to be the ascension of congressman Travis Hoyt, a conservative super star. The two are now consistently showing up close to each other in all polls. On the democratic side, there is little movement beyond state senator Dawn Rochester. But democrats are secretly hoping that Youth in Revolt favorite, Jackson Kennedy will make a run. The young mayor of Pittsburgh has the power and money to do it, but has so far been hesitant to join the race. In the event he does opt against a run, democrats have put out feelers to congressman Brayden Greene.

So the thing about the midwest being a political party's key to success is almost always accurate. Take a look at last year's races. Michigan went GOP for the first time since 1998, and reelected a republican senator and elected a republican governor. Ohio voted for Glen Walken and reelected governor Simon Halley, but then went far left to elect the nation's first open socialist senator in Hayden Straus. Pennsylvania voted for Matt Santos, and then reelected Robert Royce. Glen Walken was elected President, and most of those races went GOP. The midterms next year are going to be no different.

Congressional Democrats and Republicans urge President to get tough on debt

With the time arising to increase the nation's debt ceiling, both democrats and republicans have urged President Walken to make a big step in the way of deficit reduction for them to pass the ceiling. With a still ailing economy, with unemployment rising to 9.1% this month, some are saying this is the wrong time to start this battle, but it seems inevitable.

Democrats are in favor of modest cuts, as shown by Speaker Gelsey' ability to pass a budget deal with a lot of cuts in it, however a strong look into the efficiency of the defense department and tax increases/reform. Democrats have finally started to open up on entitlement reform. Republicans meanwhile look to make strong discretionary cuts, and are finally starting to look at corporate tax loophole closures, which is a big step.

"The people of Ohio have elected me to be a voice of reason and independence in the senate, and that's what I'm gonna do. Even after President Bartlet's key social security reform bill passed in early 2004, entitlements remain a key part of our deficit problem. Democrats and republicans must come together to solve these problems. Myself, along with several other senators in both parties are beginning to work closely to find a bipartisan deficit reduction plan. Within the next few weeks, we plan to release the work," Hayden Straus said on Countdown with Gabe Tillman last night. Straus and his colleagues are preparing to make an announcement of sorts launching their group to solve the deficit problem. A spokesman for senate democratic leader Arthur Breech said that the group would step forward all together in the next few days.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
WE ARE TWO & HALF YEARS OLD TODAY
Just a quick thankyou to say that we have now reached two & half years old.
I know that I have been taking a back seat over the last few months, but I am still on the thread every day.
Thanks to all you that read us, and post.
What is strange to me is watching the real GOP race for the nomination next year, something we where doing two years ago. In some ways we predicted that race, with Marcus Blakemore & Matt Skinner running, now we have Hermain Cain & Fred Karger, as the first Afro-american & open gay man running for the nomination, but hey we did it first.
Thanks
Mark

Da Luca wins third term

In Brazil, many had been expecting the outcome of the Presidential election to favor incumbent President Marco Da Luca. The only matter was by how many points would the socialist President win by. Well, two days following the election, and the results seem as clear as could be.

President Da Luca and his Workers' Party won with over 55% of the vote, with three other parties contesting the race. In the national congress, the worker's party, which previously had only 40 of the 78 seats (3 senators from each of the 26 states), took a surprising supermajority winning 10 seats. Technically only 8, but there were two defections from Brazilian Democratic Movement Party as well.

In the Chamber of deputies, where they previously had only 112 of 513 seats, they now have 135 seats. Many political pundits in Brazil agree that the major reasoning behind the Workers' Party strong victory in the elections was due to Da Luca's success in rebuilding the Brazilian economy after the 2008 financial crisis and the surprising jump in the size of the nation's economy. As of January 1st, 2011, Brazil had the world's 7th largest economy.
