Oil prices skyrocket overnight as Iranian moves in Persian Gulf trouble investors

New York
Crude oil prices rose by almost three US dollars in just a few nights as investors fear that conflict in the Persian Gulf will disrupt global oil supplies. ACN anchor and chief financial analyst Sloan Sabbith reported today that crude oil is now at roughly $66 per barrel, up from $62.85 three days ago. Speaking with economists and commodity traders, Sabbith reported a consensus that the large spike in oil prices was due almost entirely to the aggressive actions by Iran in entering Qumari waters.

"The threat of a constricted oil supply and the uncertainty about how dangerous it will be to ship oil through the Persian Gulf following Iran's moves in Qumari waters has led to the natural result," Sabbith reported on Market Wrap-Up on Friday night, when oil prices closed at $64.70 per barrel. "While this would seem to be in Iran's benefit, since they are the world's fifth-largest oil producer and a key member of OPEC [the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries], they are most likely to be negatively effected in the long run at the expense of countries like Russia and Venezuela, which do not have to worry about shipping their oil through dangerous or disputed territory." Sabbith also reports that officials from Iran met with officials from the United States, China and the European Union today in Vienna, but ACN was not able to the meeting's agenda when this article went to press.

In Washington, White House Chief of Staff Will Bailey and Secretary of Energy Joan Tanner met with congressional leadership late last night. The reported topic of discussion was been the possibility of a temporary increase in domestic oil production to offset a potential dip in the global oil supply, similar to the action taken by the Newman and Lassiter administrations during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the Persian Gulf War. White House Press Secretary Cassie Tatum said that the meeting "did not come to a conclusion" but instead set the groundwork for "future meeting and consultation with congressional leaders...should the need for a drastic increase in domestic oil production arise."

Isn't oil usually traded globally in barrels, not in gallons?

Great thread so far, interesting storylines.

Keep up the good work.

Graty: "A glorious chance to get rid of the Iranian Government"

Former Prime Minister Maureen Graty speaking this morning on the Andrew Marr show said that the current stand-off with Iran in the Persian Gulf was a "glorious chance to get rid of the Iranian Government".

"For forty years we in the western world have stood aside and let this bandit Government do what it wants, but now we have a chance to change it", Andrew Marr replied "are you saying the American and UK Governments should be pushing for regime change in Tehran?" yes was her reply.

When in office Graty was an outspoken critic of the Iranian regime especially after the shooting down of the United Britannia flight back in 2006 which caused problems with the Bartlet Administration. "We have done the right thing so far in Qumar, but now we have a real chance to change Iran, to give the people of Iran back their nation, a country where the rights of women have all been but ended".

Graty who retired from the House of Commons at the General Election last year, had been booked for the appearance to promote her memoirs "An independent Women" which is being released in two weeks time.

These comments are not likely to go down well either at Number Ten or the White House as both governments attempt to defuse the situation.

US strike group enters Persian Gulf, NATO issues statement against further Iranian ventures into Qumari waters

American naval forces, led by the USS Abraham Lincoln, entered the Persian Gulf early Sunday morning in a show of American naval power and in hopes of forcing Iran to return across internationally-recognized borders and leave Qumari waters. The arrival of the Abraham Lincoln and Carrier Strike Group 12 occurred only a few hours before Secretary-General Jonas Bakke of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) issued a statement on behalf of the military alliance warning against further intrusion into Qumari waters by Iran:

"After a unanimous vote by all member-states, we in NATO condemn in no uncertain terms the illegal invasion of Qumari maritime borders by the forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran and urge the departure of any Iranian vessels back to internationally-recognized Iranian waters. Any further unauthorized incursions into Qumari waters by Iranian military vessels would be ill-advised."

Iran's government has not issued a public statement since the arrival of further American ships, but there are reports of scattered protests in Iranian cities against the government's aggressive actions and at the possibility of a direct conflict with NATO countries led by the United States causing millions of men to be forced back into military service (military service is mandatory for adult men in Iran, and after serving a mandatory period of 18-24 months, they are still subject to call-ups by military officials until age 40).

Consider this non-canon as well.

I know you've seen the giant "do not post non-US news stories without going through the writing team first" post that Mark thread-marked since you replied to one of my posts on the same page, so I'm struggling to find a conclusion for why you keep doing this other than trolling.

US Bans Flights Over Gulf; Seaborn Visit to UK Still On (Regional Weekend News Updates)

Washington-The Federal Aviation Agency has issued a ban on flights over the Gulf region over rising tensions with Iran, it was confirmed today. The ban affects flights from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Turkey, Yemen, Oman, and the United Arab Eremites as the US Navy and Air Force continued moving assets into the region. Secretary of Defense Jack Shannon has called this a precautionary measure...Saudi Arabia Pledges To Defend Itself, Work With NATO on "Containment"-Riyadh, Saudi Arabia-The Saudi government, through the King, has stated that the kingdom will work closely with NATO in sending "the strongest message possible" to Iran while bolstering its own defenses in the region..."Our main concern is the Straits of Hormuz, which should remain open to all international shipping. To that end, we will work with our allies in defending ourselves if necessary. We do not want war, but we are ready to respond with force." Seaborn UK Trip Still Scheduled For June: Washington-President Seaborn's planned visit to the UK will go on as scheduled, "barring some unforseen developments" Press Secretary Cassie Tatum told reporters Saturday, as rising tensions in the Gulf raised questions as to whether or not President Seaborn would postpone the trip, his first to Great Britain as President. "I can assure you, and the British government, that President Seaborn is looking forward to visiting the United Kingdom next month, and that, as of today, nothing has changed."

FIRES CONTINUE TO RAGE IN NORTHERN NICOSIA AS BODY COUNT APPRAOCHES 500

Northern Nicosia, Turkish Republic of Cyprus- At this late hour, firefighters and other emergency personnel continue to battle the massive blaze resulting from this afternoon's explosion. More than half a dozen blocks have been engulfed by the flames as officials say Emergency workers are doing their "very best". The unofficial body count is nearly the 500 mark, but as the fires continue to spread, nothing resembling an official tally is possible at this time. What is perhaps the most perplexing is the origin of the explosion, which has yet to be discovered.

The Thoughts and Prayers of everyone at ACN are will the victims and their families on this night.

Chinese silence on Qumar crisis causes anger, worry in world capitals

Beijing The silence of the Chinese government on the developing crisis in the Persian Gulf is deafening, and is causing concern in world capitals and in international markets. Since the crisis began with the incursion of several Iranian vessels into Qumari territorial waters, the Chinese government has not issued a statement supporting or condemning the move by Iran, in stark contrast to most other nations who have issued statements against Iran for its actions. Neither has the government explained how their military forces in the Persian Gulf are responding to the situation of Iranian ships in Qumari waters, with the only reported action being Chinese ships altering course to avoid any Iranian vessels.

Frustration with Beijing is becoming most apparent in Washington, where high-level Pentagon officials have said that the lack of communication between Beijing and NATO forces could lead to a breakdown in strategy to deescalate the situation. "We don't have any idea whether PLA (People's Liberation Army, the armed forces of the People's Republic of China) ships will be coordinating any of potential operations [with NATO ships], which makes it difficult to create a long-term strategy." one high-ranking military official told ACN. In London, Paris, Moscow, and Jabal Nafusah, there is similar concern and unrest over the Chinese silence.

The position of China in Qumar since they announced their planned withdrawal following this year's elections in July has caused several differing interpretations about the change in course of Chinese foreign policy. Some analysts say that the move is due to the ascendance of a less adventurist faction within the Communist Party, while others cite the abnormally high defense budgets China has ran since their involvement in Qumar began in 2016. Still more say that Chinese withdrawal from Qumar separately from the British and American forces is part of an attempt to warm relations with Iran and ensure Chinese access to Iranian oil and natural gas should relations between Iran and the west grow sour.
