. Mongolia, with Russian support, was able to peacefully kick out the Japanese garrisons and leave the Bloc in 2030. Tibet followed in 2032.

I'm going to translate that as "Japan twigged to the fact the income from these mostly wasteland nations didn't even cover the cost of garrisoning them, and decided to let them go to hell their own way." :p

That's definitely part of it, although Mongolia might be Japan's main source of coal and gas, so it's more a blow to Japan.

Ok so here's a map which is basically a voicing of a thought process that I've had for a while, called A Dream of Steel. The current year is 2013, and the world is poised for a new Great War.

So no WWII, psedo-commie EU, USA slowly integrating all of North America with Liberian and Angolan influence, Nazi(?) China (with potential commie south)…

If Japan needs to keep Mongolia, they're not going anywhere. A Japan capable of keeping China underfoot for a century is going to squash the Mongols flat if they need to: heck, they can just round them all up and exile them to Vietnam and replace them with Chinese workers. Mongolia has a lot of coal, but i'm not sure the Japanese really need it: there's quite a lot of coal in China, and Xinjiang coal and oil prioduction is currently booming OTL. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xinjiang#Economy

How much does your Japanese empire use nuclear power, BTW? One would think the Japanese would be more into clean energy than the OTL Chinese by the 21st century...

Well thanks again!:D

Ardanzia is more of an alternate super powered Ecuador (its capital is in Quito).

So the big five are Japan, Russia, Texas, a shrunken Britwank, and a New Inca Empire? :) (If they rule over the whole Andes region, I imagine there will be a fair amount of popular culture Inca-revival, the same way Mexico often looks back to the Aztecs [1] and the Maya...)

[1] Well, not the human-sacrifice bit.

In 2021, after 37 years of continuous warfare the creaking balance of power- supported only by the constant sacrifice of lives and freedoms- began to fall apart. In the Union of Oceania, presided over by a dead man and ruled by a squabbling class of sociopathic pseudo-aristocrats, the inevitable conflict between the military and the Party erupted. The factionalism within the Party had prevented the civilian leadership from amassing sufficient power to properly control the military and when the Thought Police launched yet another purge of the more independent-minded officers the army stuck back with a coup. Lead by General James Butler, Oceanian troops secured New York and proceeded to destroy the TP and install a new unofficial military government (using the face of Big Brother of course just as the previous government had done). However political power in Oceania was insufficiently centralized for a coup at a single location to monopolize it, and with the destruction of the Party's Northern Faction, the Southern and Outer Factions refused to give up their power and autonomy. When the army tried to make them, the Oceanian Civil War began.

It quickly merged with the greater World War as the Southern Faction (allied with Outer Faction elements in Australasia) approached Eastasia about an alliance, offering to cede the Pacific Islands and its claims on the Disputed Territory if they would bolster the failing Southern Armies. Confident that they could easily dominate in such an alliance, the Eastasians agreed and it briefly appeared as though the Southern Faction would defeat the Militarists only for a desperate Butler to ally with Eurasia as a counter. The rest of Oceania splintered, when South Africa and the Oceanian troops on the Dark Continent tried to form a rival government they were crushed utterly by Eurasia, Butler ceded South Africa, the British Isles, Iceland, and Greenland to Eurasia as the price for Moscow's help. Airstrip One's Party leadership attempted to stop the Eurasians with a nuclear strike on the continent and the invading force, but Eurasia's counterstrike turned the islands to glass. There were a few tense moments after the nuclear exchange, but it failed to become general.

Both Eurasia and Eastasia worked to subvert the rival Oceanian factions and by 2023 they had become mere puppets of their foreign allies. Mysterious deaths of Butler and his counterparts in South America saw to that. The war in the Americas developed into a stalemate as the more powerful Navy of the Southern Faction and Eastasia limited the ability of Eurasia to support the Militarists, but the greater industrial strength of the Militarists and Eurasia made up for it. It seemed that the war had found a new equilibrium. But in 2024 the paradigm shifted again.

Eastasia's resources (already running low like everybody else's) were pushed to the limit by the logistical demands of keeping a massive army fighting in North America while supplying the Southern Faction (as Oceanian industry had been largely concentrated in the north). Worsening environmental problems caused localized famines across the world and Tokyo began to have trouble providing rations to its expeditionary force. Chinese military leaders prioritized food for Chinese regiments over Japanese ones, leading to friction between the ethnically Chinese and ethnically Japanese troops. In 2024 that tension exploded as Japanese military and political leaders made a power grab in the face of increasing Chinese domination of Eastasia, taking custody of the figurehead Emperor and control of the capital. Suddenly two of the superpowers were in states of civil war.

Eurasia, predictably, was ecstatic. Not only had they finally conquered all of Africa and the North Atlantic Islands, but both of their enemies had split apart. The Eurasians made great strides against Eastasia, overrunning virtually all of the Disputed Territory by 2025. In that time the Chinese managed to defeat most of the Japanese forces outside of the Home Islands and the Chinese Eastasian Faction began to make overtures to the Eurasians about ceding their claim to the Disputed Territory as well as parts of northern and western China in exchange for peace. Understanding that if they pushed too far it would cause the Eastasians to go nuclear, Eurasia was willing to accept the offer and it seemed that after 41 years World War Five would finally end with the Eurasian Union of Socialist Republics as the victor.

It was not to be.

Eurasia was terribly overstretched, more so than Eastasia had been. Trying to occupy all of Africa, a continent where outside of the north and south infrastructure had not been built since 1984 tied down massive numbers of troops, as did occupying most of South Asia, large swathes of China, North America to keep the Oceanian Militarists subservient, and fighting the Southern Faction to keep the Oceanian Civil War alive. In Europe the nuclear war with Airstrip One had left much of Western Europe radioactive and caused a localized nuclear winter, order was maintained then only with brutal force. The final straw was when a hundred years of unchecked and unregulated pollution, environmental devastation, and the destruction of the Ozone Layer came back to roost. Pollinating insects had been driven to near extinction across the Northern Hemisphere and crop yields in 2026 were barely 10% of what they needed to be to support the population. Any emergency reserves had been exhausted long ago.

Order began to crumble and what remained of the superpowers began to fall.

The rebels weren't organized revolutionaries, for the most part they weren't Nationalists or Democrats or anything with an ideology (although they frequently corresponded with marginalized ethnic groups). They were just starving people who had lost their fear of the state and no longer believed in its invulnerability. Anarchy grew and spread and soon had taken root globally as the crop failures were hardly limited to Eurasia. By 2027 Eurasia had lost control of most of Europe and the Disputed Territory, Eastasian authority was purely nominal across Indochina and much of its south and northwest, and the Oceanian factions had lost the ability to project power into their less populated hinterlands.

Then in 2028 the Eastasian Civil War goes nuclear. With it's forces outside of Japan proper reduced to a handful of islands and a few shrinking pockets on the mainland, the Japanese Faction deploys the portion of Eastasia's Nuclear arsenal under its control. The Chinese Faction responds immediately. It remains to be seen if the nuclear exchange will spread to the rest of the world, or if the ecological chaos won't finish off them too.

Map is of 2028 (Year 44 of World War V) just before things heat up.

Well, not much is going to survive all of this compounded grimdark. I eagerly await to see what shambles out of the ashes of the old order. :D

After re-reading it, I decided to hastily rewrite that update as I don't think I'm ready to wipe out all of humanity just yet. Instead I decided to go with a limited nuclear exchange in Eastasia- Eurasia and Oceania are still collapsing and could go. Maybe once I finally find a good worlda map with sea level rise I'll finally destroy civilization.

If you find one, be sure to upload it to the blank map thread. I could use a sea level rise map. :)

Heh. Great job: very Von Daniken. :) The human setting reminds me a little of Conan - the same sort of millenia-early expies of actual ancient civilizations. So is something odd going on with the Moon?

I started making this map a few weeks ago but didn't finish it and found it again last night, so I thought I'd finish it and post it.

The basic idea is a larger *Gadsden Purchase leads to a larger South and hence more power for the plantation aristocracy, leading to the northern states seceding in 1859 as the Federal Republic of America. Civil war follows, ending with the USA recognising the FRA's independence in 1863.

The plantation aristocrats' dominance of the rump United States and feet dragging in granting statehood to the north(west)ern and western territories while dividing Texas into three to increase the number of 'slave' states, prompts further secession movements and a second civil war in 1879, pitting the Union against the newly-proclaimed Pacific Republic, the FRA and Deseret independence fighters. The Second American War is brought to an end in 1885 with the signing of the Treaty of Santa Fe which sees the recognition of Pacifican independence, the transfer of Oregon, Tacoma and Washington, Shoshone and Dakota Territories to the FRA with plebiscites organised in Nebraska (USA/FRA), Montana (USA/FRA/PR) and Utah Territories (USA/FRA/Independence as Deseret/PR). All three territories vote to join the FRA.
