Superpower in Africa.
Empire of Ethiopia: I am actually going to do a full video on this scenario eventually, it’s such a great concept, so I won’t go into too much detail. Yet, basically Ethiopia invests heavily in industry just like Japan, studies European machinery and adapts it. The Empire of Ethiopia today shapes global policies and is the largest superpower in Africa, basically redefining the West’s misconceptions of Africa. Ethiopia has one of the highest standards of living and is one of the world’s great civilizations.

In November 1520, Christian II summoned representatives of the three Scandinavian merchant estates to join him in recently conquered Stockholm. Under his royal auspices, the delegates laid out a charter for the founding of a grand Nordic Trade Company, aimed at driving the Hanseatic League out of the Baltic trade and consolidate the wealth of the region in the hands of the Oldenburg triple monarchy.
Merchants from all three realms were to be enrolled in the company which would centre itself on faktorier (factories) and storing places in Copenhagen and Stockholm in Scandinavia proper, in Viborg on the Finno-Russo border and in Antwerp in the Low Countries. Each hub would be managed by a Faktor, an official appointed by the crown in concert with the major contributors to the company. Goods such as copper, iron ore, tallow, timber, elk and cow hides, salted herring, grain and beer could be easily exported from the Nordic heartlands, but the establishment of a faktorie on the Russian border would open a window to the wealth of the Trans-Ladogan market and its abundance of honey, hemp, flax and vax.
The Company never took off, as a rebellion against the king and his burgher government soon erupted in Sweden, which was soon joined by an insurrection headed by the Jutish aristocracy in Denmark.
In my timeline (shameless promotion) circumstances, however, are changed. Consequently, the Company gets a chance to counter the Hanseatic dominance of the Baltic Sea and serve as a pillar in the restored Kalmar Union's attempts at economic reform and centralisation as well as a vessel for nascent colonial ventures in North America.

A1 - Dominion of Avalon (1964)---

King Richard III's son Edward of Wales never dies young and ends up marrying Isabella of Aragon, however it leads to a huge succession crisis which results in Spain never being formed as a result. Meanwhile Richard marries a Portuguese princess and thus creates a long-lasting dynasty to present day between English and Portuguese. As a result of this history changes greatly forever since Columbus ends up sailing for Portugal resulting in much of the Portuguese colonizing areas of the New World in which the Spanish in OTL colonized.
With this happening and with the strong alliance between the English and Portuguese, this results in the English end up colonizing the New World much earlier around the same time the Portuguese begin doing so after the Portuguese conquer the Aztec Empire and the Incan Empire. This results in the English colonizing OTL Brazil naming it Avalon (which they named it after the legendary island from Arthurian legend). As a result of this the English begin to create the Ten Colonies (Amazonia, New Cornwall, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Queensland, Richardia, Iubaland, Arara, and Beraba) and they end up becoming populated by English, Welsh, and Irish settlers.
As a result Richard’s dynasty lasts to modern day, since he was able to come to an agreement with Henry Tudor resulting in the Tudors never taking the throne. As a result of this England remains Catholic to present day even when the Reformation occurs in Europe, England is effected a little by it and was able to suppress them. However Scotland (which never unites with England) ends up becoming Protestant which makes the bitterness between English and Scots worse as a result.
Meanwhile over time back in Avalon, the Ten Colonies end up becoming very populated to the point that by 1845, they are granted the title of a dominion creating the Dominion of Avalon. This results in the ten original colonies becoming the first ten founding provinces of the dominion and over time more provinces are created as well.
During the First and Second Global War the Dominion of Avalon being very loyal to the English crown sent many men to Europe to fight in the battlefields. Many died and were honored as heroes as a result. But after the Second Global War things took a turn for the whole world as the Russian Empire (run by a corrupted parliament) and the Bourbon-Habsburg Empire would become rivals toward the English Empire.
As a result a cold war has occurred and currently the Dominion of Avalon is facing it along with the rest of the world over the fear of the possibility of there being a Third Global War.
A2 - Federative Republic of Brazil (2120)
If you asked anyone before Doomsday if they thought the nation of Brazil would become a world power, they would think you be crazy to even think that a country that is run by a military regime would ever become a “world power”. Already just most of Latin America, Brazil had seen many dictators come and go throughout its history.
But when Doomsday occurred the entire Brazilian nation was changed forever. Due to the sudden changes the military junta lasted longer ending in 1990. Eventually the nation would end up being the founding member of the powerful South American Confederation (SAC) as well becoming the most economically powerful nation in the world. During this time Brazil faced bitter rivalry with Australia and the rest of the ANZC.
However when the World War on Terror began in 2018, with the destruction of Christ of the Redeemer (destroyed by hijackers from the Hamas Caliphate) along with the nuclear destruction of Recife and Natal, the Brazilians ended up having to put the rivalry against the Australians aside since the world was being threatened by widespread international terrorism. Brazil along with her South American allies would end up teaming up with Australia and her allies and end up invading civil war torn Saudi Arabia and eventually defeat the Hamas Caliphate. At the same time Brazil would end up annexing part of Venezuela which was suffering from a bloody civil war.
After the World War on Terror came to a close in 2029, Brazil surprisingly kept it’s alliance with Australia having discovered how very trustworthy they were to one another. Over time this alliance allowed them to bring humanity back into space once again sending a joint manned landing on the Moon in 2042 and eventually Mars in 2070, eradicating deadly diseases such as polio, AIDS, and malaria in the Post-Doomsday/Third World, and advancing medical technology to the point humans would be able to live longer.
As of today Brazil is the most advanced country in the world and is still a world power alongside their Aussie brethren. As a result of this Brazil (along with Australia) brought humanity out of the Second Dark Ages (being Doomsday) by resulting in Southern Hemisphere dominance in international politics and economics.
B1 - Empire of New Holland (1930)
The Dutch manage to outsmart the Portuguese thanks to the help of the English, thus allowing the Dutch to take over more of northern Portuguese Brazil capturing more coastal cities during the 1600’s. Eventually the Portuguese would end up surrendering and agreeing to give up much of northern OTL Brazil to the Dutch.
As a result of this the colony of New Holland was established with its capital city being Mauritsstad (OTL Recife), resulting the Dutch Empire using New Holland as a place for importing slaves from the African Gold Coast and eventually bring Javanese and Indian laborers from the East Indies. The colony would end up expanding further as new cities such as Alteveer (OTL Macapa), New Batenburg (OTL Anaindeua), Diepenhelm (OTL Palmas), Phillipburg (OTL Maraba), Finsterhelm (OTL Manaus), Oudewater (OTL Teresina), and Voosemeer (OTL Petrolina). As a result of this the colony became a prized crown jewel to the Dutch Empire.
However history would take a different road for the colony during the Napoleonic Wars, which resulted in the Netherlands relocating their government to the colony once the French took over and occupied the Netherlands. For a few decades the Dutch government literally ruled in New Holland in the colonial capital of Mauritsstad which made it a core to the empire. However by the 1830’s the growing New Hollander identity had rose to a huge majority. As a result the colony would end up becoming independent from the Netherlands in 1836 through little bloodshed, and as a result the new nation would end up surprising the world by adopting a constitutional monarchy in which the former governor declared himself king of his “empire”. Thus creating what we know as the Empire of New Holland.
During its history the country often was heavily involved in the wars that plagued South America and often helped out numerous times. However unlike the rest of Americas, New Holland never fell under dictatorship since the parliamentary government kept everything in balance and order. The nation would abolish slavery in 1841, and throughout the rest of the 1840’s the country often found itself in disputes with their southern neighbor of Brazil (being a slave practicing nation) as it often kidnapped many freed Africans into slavery in Brazil. Relations with natives also improved as the royal family recognized their rights to own their land as well as being citizens to the Empire of New Holland.
During the Great War, the country sent 40,000 troops over to Europe to help assist the Allies against the Central Powers. Suffering many men dying the Great War scarred the New Hollanders making it take a neutral path afterwards which it still practices today similar to how Switzerland does, but the only difference is that it still trades with much of Europe and Latin America but wishes to take no part in any major wars.
B2 - Republic of Nova Esperança (6442)
(BEWARE OF LONG TEXT!)
During the 21st century, Brazil ended up becoming a rising superpower as it’s conditions were improving. By the time the United States fell in the Second American Civil War during the year of 2064, the only remaining superpowers were Brazil, China, and India which were all rivals toward one another. As a result the Second Cold War began in 2065 and continued onward even into the 2400’s. During this time Brazil became the most powerful nation on Earth and most advanced in technology as well when it came to military and medical advancements. This resulted in Brazil becoming the nation with the most highest standard of living on the Human Development Index in 2300 AD. Already by then Brazil had also began colonizing parts of the Solar System having founded colonies on Luna, Mars, and the moons of Saturn and Jupiter, as well as having five large space colonies orbiting the equator of Earth.
But suddenly everything changed for humanity when it encountered foreign parasitic invaders of unknown origin called the Red Death. In 2418, the Chinese colonies on Neptune’s moon of Triton were destroyed (and its inhabitants were literally eaten alive by the swarm) by the parasitic hivemind being named the Red Death for it sinister appearance that almost looking like humans but entirely red colored (even though they can shift into any size they want depending on how many there are). Despite numerous attempts in trying to defeat this invading threat, humanity couldn’t win against them since no matter how many times they were blown up, nuked, and shot at they would end up attaching themselves back together with their numerous small spores (size of a human hand) showing that they were very similar to starfish since they are able to grow back parts and even create copies of themselves. And of course as the Red Death continued on their genocidal conquest through the Solar System against humanity, and for the people on Earth they knew it it would be a matter of time once they start knocking on their front door.
As a result of this in 2432 AD, Brazil created the massive colony ship named Nova Esperança (meaning “new hope” in Portuguese) and launched it into space. The entire large ship once launched had 876,000 people (along with 100,000 species of animals) inside all spread out enough to not be crowded. Even the Brazilian government relocated onto the ship so Brazil would never die. Among those who went onto the ship were many Brazilians, but also many other Latin Americans from Spanish speaking nations, along with a few British, Germans, Italians, Israelis, South Africans, French, Egyptians, and Poles.
When the ship was launched the entire crew and residents lost contact with Earth in 2439 AD, meaning that the Red Death had finally took over Earth and killed everyone on it. Other colony ships of Indian and Chinese origin were seen but all of them were destroyed by the Red Death since they were unable to escape in time.
This resulted in the Nova Esperança being the only ship left as it slowly drifted through the Milky Way Galaxy. Eventually the remaining Brazilian government on board would end up renaming the entire ship as the Republic of Nova Esperança naming it the successor of Brazil and humanity. Over time as population grew more and more the inhabitants were able to create advanced genetic modifications to all the people aboard. These genetic advancements were the ability to prolong hunger for five weeks and thirst by a single week (which the advancement of technology the scientists were able to create water from simply air through advanced modification), better eyesight (being 270° eyesight like that of owls), and having night-vision (similar to that of cats), and the ability to withstand temperature up to 161 F and down to -52 F. However even with all these genetic modifications it came with a cost of which being that everyone has Aspergers (which oddly enough everyone considers as a positive thing since it basically allows everyone being very smart on certain things). Eventually by 2940 AD, everyone on the ship were genetically modified by being born either through artificial wombs or natural way of childbirth.
The entire population of the ship is now at a total of 5 million inhabitants (the ship is able to hold a total of 8 million people still spread out, literally the ship is "fucking" huge!) and plenty of people are of mixed race (or as Brazilians always referred to mixed people being called “pardos”) and mostly everyone speaks and understands Portuguese since it is the commonly spoken language throughout the colony ship. However there are surprisingly still a big majority of Spanish speakers (however due to centuries of mixing with the other languages, you could easily tell it is somewhat very different that of Spanish language we know in 2018) since many people from across former Latin America (mainly being Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Venezuela, Peru, Mexico, Honduras, and Panama) boarded the ship when it was launched into space, there are plenty of people who speak English (mainly those who are descendants of Guyanese, Barbados, Jamaicans, and a few British), French (mainly those who are descendants of those who hailed from French Guiana, Ivory Coast, Haiti, and some of the French Caribbean), Dutch (mostly people who are of Surinamese or Aruban origin), German (amazingly the Hunsrückisch dialect still exists thanks to the government demanding it to be taught in schools), Italian (which the Talian dialect also amazingly is alive), and Quechua (even a significant number of indigenous folks from the Andeans were able to come onto the ship, so pretty much the Incans' descendants survived the destruction of Earth).
Religiously most of the population of Nova Esperança still believe in a “God” but aren’t really very religious though. To make it more clear basically a total of 80% of people believe that the Universe itself is God’s simulation and he just sitting back to watch it. But at the same time there are a huge majority of agnostics and atheists which only increased in numbers since the Destruction of Earth (many religious people felt that God abandoned humanity allowing the Red Death to kill them, which of course pissed off a lot of many religious people once they saw Earth get literally devoured by the gigantic swarms of Red Death).
Anyway as of right now currently the Republic of Nova Esperança is drifting through extragalactic space heading towards the Andromeda Galaxy since it has been discovered many centuries ago that the entire Milky Way has become infested with the Red Death (since the colony ship encountered former alien civilizations that were destroyed by the Red Death showing that it literally was a galactic threat) so only option is to escape to Andromeda. Even though it is going to be many centuries until they arrive, it is a heartwarming thing to know that humanity is still kicking thanks to Brazil.
The beginning of humanity’s next chapter will only begin once they reach the Andromeda Galaxy and up colonizing whatever number of Earth-like planets they can find.
C1 - Emirate of Alijnat Alkhadra (1910)
Abu Bakr II of the Malian Empire sends an expedition to west of Africa to see where the limit of the Atlantic Ocean (which wasn’t called that at the time) was. However when the explorers come back a few years later they tell about the discovery of a vast land covered in palm trees and strange red colored natives. With Abu Bakr II being very curious and fascinated by this sudden discovery he ends up ordering more explorers to explore more of this new unknown land. This results in the discovery of the New World happening earlier before Columbus.
Eventually this results in the Malians and Arabs naming the continent Abubakri (OTL South America) in Abu Bakr II’s honor and the Caribbean Islands are named the Juzur Alzamand (translating to the “Emerald Islands”). After exploring much of OTL Brazil, the Malians end up colonizing it which over time expands through either conquest or diplomacy and many natives are converted Islam or simply adopt Islam but mix it along with their original traditions.
When the Malian Empire collapsed the colony would end up becoming entirely independent resulting in the ruling officials creating the Emirate of Alijnat Alkhadra (translating to “green paradise” in Arabic). This results in the new nation having Malian as the spoken language along with Arabic being the lingua francia. Due to this it results in much of the Americas speaking Arabic as a secondary language instead of Spanish or Portuguese.
C2 - Socialist Commune of Brazil (1989)
The 1964 Brazilian coup d'etat results in a worst outcome than in OTL, resulting in a massive bloody civil war across Brazil in which Marxists and other communists (along with a bunch of leftists who aren’t communist but feel better off being on their side) fight against right wing forces. As a result of this the Marxists end up winning due to being supplied by the Soviets and Chinese. The United States despite wanting to get heavily involved in the Brazilian Civil War end up not wanting to have any involvement in it due to the failure of what happened in Cuba and the possibility of another missile crisis.
As a result the Socialist Commune of Brazil is established in 1968, which brings another part of Latin America under Soviet influence. But however this is short-lived since due to the bitterness that the Soviets and Chinese have toward one another it results in Brazil creating its own communist bloc in Latin America called the Rio Pact named after the city of Rio de Janeiro which the first meeting was held in 1970. As a result many countries such as Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru (due to a more successful Shining Path), Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Honduras end up becoming communist due to Brazil’s strong influence. This of course makes the Americans more uneasy now that there are way more communist nations in the Americas resulting in a worse Red Scare in the 1970’s along with the US government forbidding citizens to visit communist Latin American countries, as well as limiting immigration from Latin America to low numbers.
The Rio Pact even gets more globally known once African nations like Angola and Mozambique end up joining it instead of allying with the Soviet Union. Allowing for the further spread of communism into Africa resulting in nations such as Madagascar, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Senegal becoming communist.
During the late 1970’s, the Brazilians end up developing nuclear weapons and using the São Pedro e São Paulo Archipelago and uninhabited parts of the Amazons as testing sites for them. Resulting in the United States creating more nuclear weapons due to the fact Brazil now has some, and even surprisingly to many the Canadians end up creating a few nuclear weapons of their own for the same reason since many powerful communist nations are armed with nukes.
Throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s the Socialist Commune of Brazil arrested many people who spoke against the government, criticized it openly in the press or on television, or protesting against it in the streets. This resulted in many of those arrested being tortured and some people would end up vanishing out of the blue with all records of themselves being destroyed by the government to make it seem that they never existed. Television would become very heavily propagandized by the communist government and even Brazilian soap operas, crime shows, and comedy would be forced to propagandize communism for the average viewer. Even children TV shows were not spared as they too were teaching young children on how Brazilian communism is the best and how capitalism is evil and most importantly how the Soviets and Chinese can never be trusted since they are false communists.
Even now as of the mid-1980’s the Socialist Commune of Brazil is still alive and functioning very well along with much of the Rio Pact member nations. However recently in 1987, the nations of Honduras and Nicaragua end up overthrowing their communist governments and becoming capitalist which was a big impact on Brazil since now the communist government of Brazil is beginning to wonder how long will the Rio Pact last for and also beginning to wonder what would happen next to Brazil once the Rio Pact is gone.
Whatever happens is for the rest of history to tell. Who knows maybe the Socialist Commune of Brazil will survive into the 21st century or end up collapsing in the 1990’s.
