Didn't the Soviets de-industrialize in the 20s and 30s compared to the previous trajectory of the Russian Empire?
No, that comes from the disruption of the Great War & Civil War 1914-1920+, changes in the pattern or course of industrialization, and a general slackening globally through the 1930s. Resuming the growth of the industrial sectors in the 1920s was in part slowed by the problems in reorganizing the agricultural sector. Its not just food shortages, but less biomass available for industrial use. Wood, fibre, oils, chemicals, ect... The emphasis on heavy industry growth in the 1930s distort comparisons with pre 1915 where a larger portion was in light industry.
Its not quite a apples to oranges comparison, but maybe comparing juice oranges for industrial food processing to more generic eating oranges in the grocery.
