Union of American Realms: A World-Building Exercise

Commonwealth of Riviera
The Commonwealth of Riviera (French: Le Pays de Rivières; Spanish: La Mancomunidad de la Riviera) is one of 37 semi-autonomous, constituent member states of the Union of American Realms (UAR). Where the word riviera is typically used to denote sea coasts of a region, like the Italian Riviera, the regional name Riviera evolved from river, a play on the vital waterways that are found within the realm including the Akansa, Mississippi and Missouri rivers. In fact, the realm's official French name is Le Pays de Rivières, or, the Country of Rivers/River Country. Riviera is the third largest realm in terms of population within the UAR and one of the three non-Native Confederacies where a majority speak a language other than English at home and are typically bilingual.[1] Riviera is the third-most Catholic realm in the UAR as well.

Riviera has one of the richest, most diverse demographics within the UAR. The area that comprises the realm was absorbed into the greater confederation following the six year long American-Louisianan War[2] in the early 19th century. The area was initially inhabited by a number of native people before the French incorporated it as one of their New World colonies. France claimed the area as part of its Louisiane Colony, where it was further distinguished as part of Illinois Country or Upper Louisiane. The region was slow to populate under the French, who began exploring and settling it in the late 17th century, before growth began to expand in the mid-to-late 18th century. The settlement of Riviera by the French was mainly centered along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers at first, with its early economy revolving around logging, fur trapping, mining and agricultural projects at a smaller scale than in other parts of French America. The population of the area waned somewhat from its initially settling by the French until the Six Years War[3], after which French settlers east of the Mississippi emigrated there en masse. Following the French Civil War[4] and the flight of the republicans[5], the population of Louisiane as a whole grew exponentially as a mass wave of French immigrated from Europe. Most of this immigration was centered around New Orleans and the Gulf, but what would become Riviera would also see substantial growth as a result. French authorities, eager to expand the population of its colony, also began encouraging American settlement particularly in the region. The invention of the cotton gin also spurred growth and would lead to a spike in slavery within the territory.

Henry V's invasion of the Rhineland and Savoy sparked the start of the First Great European War[6] in 1803, setting the stage for further upheaval in its colonies. With Louisiane's population having grown exponentially in the preceding decades, France called for its colony to send conscripts. The colonial leadership, however, was overwhelmed by local opposition. Their refusal to send men to fight on the continent led to the Louisianan War of Independence[7] and the breaking away of the last French colony on mainland North America. The new Republic of Louisiane covered significant territory that was within the sights of Americans from the UAR and important to the UAR's interests, including regions around the Great Lakes. When Louisiane imposed harsh tariffs on goods traveling down the Mississippi, the UAR issued its first joint war resolution and invaded the burgeoning republic. Select French settlers joined with American immigrants in present-day Riviera to support annexation and in the end most of Louisiane would be recognized as American territory. The local populace of Riviera was allowed to carve its own region by the UAR for its support during the war, and thus the modern borders of Riviera were born.

Though American settlement into Riviera began to grow, the area had developed a strong French founder population. After its incorporation into the UAR, nearly all Great Lake French populations in other UAR territories made their way to Riviera, including residents of Detroit and Chicagou. The population was boosted somewhat further during the Louisianan Civil War[8] when Louisiane abolished slavery, as some Louisiane slavers moved to Riviera's lands in the southeast. By the mid-1800s, Riviera had developed a strong and distinct culture that was mostly French speaking, with sizable "American" migrants as well, and had begun to attract German migrants. French was the lingua franca, though progressively efforts to teach English to all spread as well. The capital was moved to Assomption[9], named for Fort Assomption that was in the area, in 1841. Overtime, hispanic migrants entered the realm towards the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries, escaping the economic troubles that had befallen Colorado in that period, further adding to the diversity of the realm. Despite the existence of slavery in the realm, the practice was largely centered in the southeast portions of Riviera. Outside of the territories near and east of the Mississippi, slavery was not huge. As such, Riviera ended up becoming one of the first of the slave realms to fully abolish the practice, doing so in 1867. In the 20th century, Riviera encouraged migration into its vast territories and saw such migration, be it from Americans from other realms in the UAR, or from across Europe during the 20th century.

Today, Riviera is home to a number of different people. Most residents claim Rivierien ancestry, a catch-all phrase for the descendants of the French colonists that settled in the region during the colonial period and after Riviera became part of the UAR. Individuals claiming Rivierien ancestry make up just over 60% of the realms population. Though the realm has extremely high levels of bilingualism due to English being taught to children and adolescents, the vast majority of those claiming Rivierien ancestry and identity continue to be taught Rivierien French as their first language and continue to speak it at home. Because of the prevalent use of Rivierien French, many residents who do not claim Rivierien ancestry nonetheless learn to speak the regional French dialect anyway, meaning that nearly 80% of the realm's population speaks it to some degree. In the UAR, it is encouraged that people mark as many ancestries as they wish to claim on their census so some individuals mark multiple. Over the years, many groups have become prominent in Riviera either by intermarrying with the Rivierien population or establishing their own distinct groups. The four ancestries most claimed, other than Rivierien, are German (21.3%), Hispanic (19.3%), African[10] (19.1%) and "American"[11] (18.3%).

[1] These other realms are East Florida and Canada.
[2] The American-Louisianan War occurred from 1814-20 and was the first war where the UAR as a whole engaged since the Independence War.
[3] This TL's version of the OTL Seven Years War, France does not lose its Louisiana Colony following the war, but loses everything east of the Mississippi.
[4] The French Civil War occurred from 1788-91, roughly, and resulted in a victory for the monarchists.

[5] Rather than outright kill the large segments of the population that sympathized with the revolutionaries, France's Henry V sought to pacify the situation by "granting" large areas of land to the rebels - in Louisiana, and forcing them to leave the motherland. This came to be called the flight of the republicans.
[6] A major, continental conflict in Europe that shifted the balance of power and preceded even worse conflicts over the next century and a half.
[7] The Louisianan War of Independence raged from 1804-09 and resulted in the independence of France's Louisiane colony.
[8] The Louisianan Civil War was a bloody civil conflict that occurred in the 1830s when Louisiane abolished slavery.
[9] Assomption lies roughly where the OTL city of Memphis, Tennessee is.
[10] Most residents who claim African ancestry also claim Rivierien ancestry or speak Rivierien French.
[11] "American" refers to English-speaking, American settlers in the region particularly from the 19th century. Despite early unity with the Rivieriens, the two groups grew rather hostile in the mid-19th century. Americans are the least likely to have intermixed with the Rivierien majority and the most likely to be adherents of the Church of Columbia.

The Twin Rivers, officially the Enlightened Governate of the Twin Rivers, is so named because of the great Mississippi River that makes up the entirety of its eastern border and the great Missouri River that cuts through the center of it. The region that would become the Twin Rivers joined the UAR following the Louisianan War as part of the lands annexed from Louisiane. It was separate from Riviera and recognized a full-on member state shortly after. French influence in the Twin Rivers is still evident, but was even weaker than it was in Riviera, and the realm was overrun by American settlers soon after incorporation. While Rivierien ancestry is still claimed by a large enough minority of residents and French influence can be seen in the names of many cities, the Twin Rivers is majority English-speaking. The Twin Rivers recognizes three official capital cities: Entrepot, where the executive resides, is also the largest city in the realm; Orleans is where the judiciary resides; and the legislature resides in St. Charles, which was the initial sole capital of the realm before the tri-capital arrangement was made in the late 1800s.

Unlike Riviera, the Twin Rivers were organized as a Governate as opposed to a Commonwealth, indicating the presence of a strong executive. This was overseen by the first Lord-Governor of the Twin Rivers Sir Aaron Burr, who was appointed to the position by King Bushrod in 1818. Burr had been the architect of American separatist movements and alliances with French locals across the northern reaches of Louisiane and his machinations have chiefly been considered to have caused the Louisianan War. Burr oversaw a number of actions in the Twin Rivers considered progressive by for their time - during his reign, the Twin Rivers officially outlawed slavery within its territories and recognized the right to vote of women and freedmen.

In the present, the Twin Rivers is mostly covered in agricultural operations and its western half is particularly less populated than its eastern half. Nonetheless, despite the vast majority of its territory serving agricultural purposes, the Twin Rivers does have a number of urban areas and boasts a total population numbering around 9M. It is home to the largest number of Orthodox adherents of any member of the UAR along with the largest Slavic minority of any member of the UAR, most of which are Russians or New Russians that came to the realm following the Alyaskan Revolution.

The Commonwealth of Aegyptania

Aegyptania is one of 37 constituent members of the Union of American Realms, it's 27th most populous state. An historically agricultural and mining realm, urbanization and industrialization throughout the 20th century led to the growth of it's three principal cities: Memphis, Fort Steuben and Cairo, the realm's capital. The areas in Aegyptania across the Mississippi from the Riviera's Saint-Louis have also seen some growth in recent years. Outside of these urban areas, however, the realm continues to be largely farmland, countryside and occasional mining operations. Aegyptania was settled by people from the Upper South, particularly Virginians, and the culture of the realm is similar to the northwestern areas of Transylvania, Aegyptania's southern neighbor. Aegyptania was once a slave realm though never had a large population of slaves within its territories. The realm has continued to struggle with this history, with most of the realm's black population sticking to the cities with many of the settlements in the realm considered "sundown towns."

As a UAR commonwealth, Aegyptania is led largely by a strong legislature. It's executive is known as the Imperator, whose functions within Aegyptania are largely ceremonial (though they oversee the realm's Realm Guard). The Imperator, like other executives of the UAR, plays the role of the realm's chief representative at the confederal level, serving on the Executive Council. One of Aegyptania's Imperators, Abraham II Taggart, was elected Governor-President of the UAR in 1998 following the assassination of Bert Long. Taggart held the position for 14 years as he worked to pacify the tensions that had grown during the Long years - he also over the 2007 U.A.R. lunar-landing which made the UAR the fourth nation to land humans on the moon. Taggart passed away in 2014 and was succeeded by current Imperator Martin Bellman.

New River Gators
NRGwiki.png
The New River Gators are a professional barrelball team based in New River City, Mayami. The team plays in the Confederal Barrelball Association as a member of the Peninsular Division of the CBA's Southern Conference. Despite being one of the league's youngest franchise's, it has become one of its most successful having won six championships since its founding in 1992. The team plays at the All Peoples Memorial Center in downtown New River City and is partly owned by the Mayami Confederacy's realm government. They are the second CBA team to be based within one of the four native confederacies of the Union of American Realms.

The team struggled to succeed in its first decade, as free agents passed up on the franchise. Everything changed following the free agency period of 2009 when superstars LeBron James and Chris Paul took advantage of the franchise's cap space to announce they'd be teaming up and playing for the young franchise. They joined All-Star forward Chris Bosh, who had played with the Gators since being drafted. The move by James and Paul were considered "league breaking" and decried as unfair, with the Big Three, as they came to be called, expected to make the sport un-competitive. They'd go on to win a championship their first season together (2009-10).

The Gators would dominate the 2010s, winning all six of their championships in the decade and becoming just the second team to four-peat in league history. They won a championship in the first four seasons they played together (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) and two more later in the decade. In 2015, Chris Bosh was sidelined with a heart condition though he remained with the teams in hopes of rejoining before the playoffs. Despite playing in the Finals and winning a ring with the team that year, it was announced that summer that Bosh's condition would not improve and continued play could put him at risk of death. Under his protest, the team announced they would pay out the entirety of his remaining contract and Bosh ultimately retired due to his heart condition. His jersey was retired by the franchise, a first for the franchise.

Despite the loss of a key part of the rotation with Bosh's retirement, the Gators made it to their seventh straight Finals Appearance in 2016, but lost in six to the York Towers. The Gators went ahead and made it to their eighth straight Finals Appearance following the 2016-17 season, a franchise and league record, ultimately winning their sixth title against the Vistula Pistons. From 2010 through 2019, the New River Gators made the playoffs each season, made eight finals appearances and won six championships, the most of any franchise. LeBron James won league MVP five times in that span.

Yeah, barrelball is this world's version of basketball. In the same way as OTL, a barrel is no longer used the way a basket is no longer used today. Instead, barrelball has adopted ringed nets like OTL. Barrels were removed to facilitate easier rebounding around the "barrel." Nonetheless, like in OTL where you'd still call it a "basket" the area is still called a "barrel" in TTL's lingo.

Onondaga Foresters
ONOwiki.png
The Onondaga Foresters are a professional barrelball team based in Onondaga, Haudenosaunee. The team is one of 36 franchise's that make up the Confederal Barrelball Association (CBA) and competes as part of the Central Division of the Northern Conference. The Foresters were the first CBA franchise from a native confederacy, being the sole franchise from a native confederacy until the 1992 CBA Expansion that brought the New River Gators into the league. The franchise was established following the death of High Chief Deganawidah and the end of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy's social doctrine known as the Plan for Haudenosaunee Growth. It was accepted into the CBA in 1972, after years of lobbying by the Haudenosaunee government. It is the first CBA franchise where a realm government owns a majority stake of the franchise, the only other being the New River Gators who are majority-owned by the Mayami Confederacy.

Though the Foresters have seen bouts of relative success since their establishment, the franchise failed to win a championship for the vast majority of its history. Since 1972, the franchise has managed to win 10 division titles throughout its history, five coming in the 2010s. For the early part of its history, the franchise struggled to secure free agents and in keeping talent it gained as a result of the yearly drafts. In recent years, however, the franchise has managed to keep a core of players in the form of 2008 Draft selections Kevin Love and DeAndre Jordan, and 2010 Draft selection Paul George. Despite indications from both Jordan and George in the mid-2010s that they'd depart the franchise after failing to advance to the Finals, ownership succeeded in keeping them. The Love-Jordan-George trio has led the franchise to its five division titles in recent years making the Foresters consistent contenders in the modern era.

This success amounted to the Foresters upset victory over the defending champion York Towers in the Northern Conference Finals during the 2020 CBA Playoffs (played in a "bubble" as a result of the CVD-19 pandemic). With the team's three-point shooting gaining efficiency in the last few seasons, their heightened defense allowed them to outlast the Towers in a thrilling seven game series. The Foresters went on to face the Charleston Clippers in the CBA Finals in a highly anticipated match up. The Clippers were led to the best record in the Southern Conference by their towering duo of DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis, each on final years of their contracts. Kevin Love's performance in these Finals were especially lauded as he banged inside (and outside) with Davis, and DeAndre Jordan's defensive pressure on Cousins, along with George's contributions on the wing, allowed the Foresters to secure their first title in franchise history after six games.

Could you do something on the buffed Russian Alaska please? I am hoping to find at least one TL where a Russian American colony has a population in the high single digit or even double digit millions. And besides, that Alaska looks pretty big.

I'll work something on Russian Alaska up in the coming weeks depending on my work schedule!

In the meantime, here is another CBA post:

Vistula Pistons
VISwiki.png

The Vistula Pistons are one of the oldest franchise's in the Confederal Barrelball Association (CBA) to still be based in the city of its founding, that being Vistula, Ohio, on the shores of Lake Erie. The franchise was founded in 1954 (its first season being the 1954-55 CBA season) and the upcoming 2020-21 CBA season will be its 65th. The franchise celebrated its fiftieth anniversary throughout the 2004-05 CBA season, with the city of Vistula partnering with the organization to promote the team. The team hoped to win a back-to-back championship that season to coincide with the anniversary after winning the title the year before, but they would come up short in the 2005 CBA Finals. The 2005 Finals rank as one of the most watched sporting events of the 2000s. The team currently plays at the Polar Fizz Arena, previously known as the AllRealm Arena prior to Polar Fizz Co.'s purchase of the sports complex in 2015. The team has played at this downtown location since the 1990s, but spent the first decades of its existence playing at the Motor Dome, today still used by an era of varsity sports teams from Vistula University. The franchise has been owned by a group headed by media mogul Usher Raymond IV since 2009.

A combination of their long history and their periodic success has made the Pistons one of the most prominent franchise's in the league. Within four years of joining the league, the Pistons became heavyweights, winning their first division title in the franchise's third season (1957-58), their first conference championship in their fourth (1958-59), and their first national championship a year later when the franchise won the 1960 CBA Finals. The Pistons have had 39 playoff berths throughout their 65 season history, making the playoffs roughly 60% of the time. In that time, the Pistons have won fourteen division titles, five times as part of the Central Division, and nine times as part of the Frontier Division (following the league re-alignment of 1972). The team has competed in ten CBA Finals throughout its history, winning four championships in the process. The teams longest playoff drought occurred during the second half of the 90s and early 2000s, when the Pistons failed to make the playoffs in eight straight seasons (1995-2002) before leading the Frontier Division in 2003 and returning to the postseason. The franchise is currently experiencing its longest streak of consecutive playoff berths, having made the playoffs each year since 2010, a streak of 11 years.

Throughout its various boom periods, the team has been home to a number of star players, including the likes of Bingo Smith, Isiah Thomas, and Zeke Mattis. In the mid-2000s, when the franchise won two of its four championships, the team was led by David Ginobli and Brad Mooney, who the team had acquired through the draft, along with Jason Kidd, who joined the team following the 2002 off-season free agency. During the 2007 season, Brad Mooney suffered a season ending injury after breaking his right leg on January 7th, in a game against the San Agustin Sol. The injury would end up inducing an early retirement from the All-Star forward. The Pistons suffered other injuries and setbacks during the season, and the defending champions failed to make the playoffs. During the 2007 off-season free agency, Jason Kidd left the franchise, effectively bringing this era of the franchise's history to an end.

The modern Pistons came about after scoring draft gold, winning the lottery for the first overall pick in 2008 CBA Draft. The Pistons would use the pick to select Derrick Rose, who would go on to win Rookie of the Year for the 2008-09 season and lead the team back to the playoffs in his sophomore campaign. During the 2012 off-season free agency period, Kevin Durant announced he would be leaving the Philadelphia Warriors and teaming up with Rose in Vistula, ushering in the explosive offense that has been characteristic of the team in the 2010s. The duo would make it to the CBA Finals in just their first season together, and have competed in four since 2013. That being said, some believe Durant and Rose have underperformed, only winning one national title in that time despite being two of the leagues best players. Durant, Rose and the Pistons last made the Finals in 2017, though they have made it to the Conference Finals as recently as this last season (2019-20), and remain championship contenders.

I've paused the greater world of the UARverse after I started working out the linear timeline because I realized I was having to go back and retcon considerably. That being said, I know a few of you have asked to see things outside of the UAR and I do have a pretty good grasp on the linear timeline up to the year 1900, so I'll try and get something up soon!

Ah alright but it will be nice to some change lol and also do nascar still exist ittl? As of the most recent worlda update, which shows the world in the mid-to-late 19th century, Portugal actually controls Sumatra (and Sunda) while the Dutch control the rest of Java and other parts of the area. Not sure what it will look like in the present, but I'll work on some of this over the weekend hopefully!

Well thr javanese and the sundanese are histprically are rivals with the javanese being moderate and sundanese being the religious one and also since you are talking about sports lately did some sport still retain their original name or do all of them have their name changed?
