TL-191: After the End

Man, this TL turns 15 years old today... Congrats on keeping it going for so long!
Wow...15 years! I can't believe the in-depth fan lore this has added to the series. I can't believe how far this is going into the future, well after the end. So detailed and at times very realistic. Amazing work done here! And I'm still waiting for the full 2010s write-up. So congrats to David to making it this far with After the End. 🙌👍

Thank you everyone.

I hope that this ATL has improved in plausibility and in its writing since I started it. The trajectory of this ATL certainly changed as I wrote it over the years.

What was the process like of moving the seat of government back to DC after the Second Great War?

After the end of the Second Great War, it took the entirety of President Dewey’s two terms in office to move the different US government departments and branches back to Washington. The city of Washington required extensive reconstruction after decades of neglect and the impact of the two Great Wars against the former CSA.

Reconstruction in Washington continued under the Truman administration. During the 1950s, the economy of Washington finally started to recover, with the influx of a larger civilian population.

By 1961, the reconstruction of Washington was considered complete by the US government.

Was there any backlash in Philadelphia to the Los of jobs due to the move?

The people and the city government of Philadelphia wasn’t happy at the US government officially relocating to Washington after the end of the Second Great War, though it was also expected, because of the devastation of Philadelphia in the Confederate superbomb attack at the end of the Second Great War, and because Washington had never ceased to officially be the capital of the United States, even as Philadelphia served as the defacto capital of the nation.

Philadelphia was also subject to reconstruction by the US government after the end of the Second Great War.

Yeah I mean what could possibly symbolize the reunification of the country better than relocating the seat of government back to its proper place?

What's the population of the UK and Metro France in comparison to OTL's 2023? Since the Brits go South- and Southeast-ward, where do the French go other than Québec? As an addendum, how much bigger is Québec's population in comparison as well?

By 2023, there are 55 million people living in France. There are 59 million people living in the United Kingdom.

-
By 2023, there are 20 million people living in the Republic of Quebec. Most of the Québécois population lives in the southern regions of the nation. The higher population of Quebec in comparison our world is mostly because of the large numbers of immigrants who arrived in the nation from France after the end of the Second Great War.

-
After the end of the Second Great War, most French emigres who didn’t go to Quebec left for the Empire of Brazil, or for other nations in South America. Most of the French citizens who left the newly independent nation of Algeria emigrated to Brazil. A number of former French military officers and soldiers were recruited into the Brazilian military in the first generation after the end of the Second Great War.

-
The surviving Jews of France, along with the Jews of newly independent Algeria, all emigrated after the end of the Second Great War, either to Quebec, the United States, or the Empire of Brazil.

As another addendum to this, how many Frenchmen left Metro France and Algeria pre- and post-SGW?

During the Interwar years in TTL, almost 500,000 people left France, mostly for the Republic of Quebec, the Empire of Brazil, or other nations in South America.

During the first generation after the end of the Second Great War, over five million people left France, because of the immediate postwar economic collapse and out of fear of a German Empire now armed with superbombs. The French emigrants during the postwar generation mostly left for the Republic of Quebec, the Empire of Brazil, or other nations in South America.
