Routes for World Hegemony

There are different routes to world hegemony depending on the starting location - expansion by sea from Western Europe and Russia’s attempts at hegemony are well known.

What methods of expansion, and what necessary non-core territories/client states are required to become the world hegemon?

obviosly that differs by country, and certain countries are poor starting points like Mauretania.

Depends on the timeframe, the geographical area you want to be hegemon of, the tech level, and the kind of power you wish to wield in said hegemon state (the URSS was a superpower but was very different from the USA, both were different than the British Empire a century earlier, etc.)

As in modern Mauritania? I don't think being at the chokepoint of the trans-Saharan trade is a bad starting point. Certainly the Almoravids, who originated in this area, would disagree.
