Sylvania - From Latin
sylva meaning "forest"/"wood"; the Lake of the Woods marks the state's northern border
Michigania - From the Lake Michigan
Chersonesus - From Greek
χερσόνησος (
chersonesos) meaning "peninsula"; the Lower Peninsula of Michigan
Assenisipia - From the Assenisipi River, now called the Rock River
Metropotamia - From Greek
μήτηρ (meter, "mother"/"source") +
ποταμός (potamos, "river") meaning "mother of rivers"; the sources of the Muskingum, Great Miami, Little Miami, Maumee, Sandusky, Wabash, and Illinois Rivers lie or were expected to lie within the state
Illinoia - From the Illinois River
Saratoga - From the Battle of Saratoga
Washington - From George Washington
Polypotamia - From Greek
πολύς (polys, "many") +
ποταμός (potamos, "river") meaning "many rivers"; the Wabash, Shawnee, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois, Mississippi, and Missouri Rivers converge within the state
Pelisipia - From Pelisipi River, now called the Clinch River, but Jefferson says that this was another name for the Ohio River
