Fuck, I need to go read that timeline again.

Context would be appreciated.

When the French Revolution really got going, France got into "rational" and "sensible" stuff a lot. From the pretty good (metric system) to the weird (a new calendar year replacing 1793 with Year One). This is middle of the road - France did eventually replace its provinces with departments, but not with the perfect square grid as seen and proposed here.

Proposal for Northwestern states by Thomas Jefferson c. 1784.
Is there an etymology of these somewhere?
Sylvania - From Latin sylva meaning "forest"/"wood"; the Lake of the Woods marks the state's northern border
Michigania - From the Lake Michigan
Chersonesus - From Greek χερσόνησος (chersonesos) meaning "peninsula"; the Lower Peninsula of Michigan
Assenisipia - From the Assenisipi River, now called the Rock River
Metropotamia - From Greek μήτηρ (meter, "mother"/"source") + ποταμός (potamos, "river") meaning "mother of rivers"; the sources of the Muskingum, Great Miami, Little Miami, Maumee, Sandusky, Wabash, and Illinois Rivers lie or were expected to lie within the state
Illinoia - From the Illinois River
Saratoga - From the Battle of Saratoga
Washington - From George Washington
Polypotamia - From Greek πολύς (polys, "many") + ποταμός (potamos, "river") meaning "many rivers"; the Wabash, Shawnee, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois, Mississippi, and Missouri Rivers converge within the state
Pelisipia - From Pelisipi River, now called the Clinch River, but Jefferson says that this was another name for the Ohio River

Edit: Equitasia and other new names lower down are by the artist, alt-reality on DeviantArt, and were not part of Jefferson's proposal
Equitasia - From Latin equitas meaning "equalness"/"evenness"/"fairness"

I also took the liberty of adding the Penobscot River, which the British could've taken after the War of 1812. It's the red.
