Peshawar Lancers Redux: Asia

By the Late 1880s the Empire of the Rising Sun had established a strong foothold on the Chinese Mainland. Peking was basically abandoned as the Fall made it impossible to maintain a position there. Shanghai was the Largest Chinese City to be controlled by the Imperial Army. Order was maintained and resources were used to maintain the population as well as export to the Japanese homeland. Formosa and Hainan both say the arrival of refugees from Northern Japan. Food production was the number one priority.

The Empire of the Rising Sun was continuing to push to conquer more of China. It was mainly to keep the rabble from organizing and becoming a bigger problem. The Japanese were using their small but growing Navy to defeat Pirates and maintain the sea lanes between the home Islands and its two colonies.

Asia was seeing a lot of Changes . The Fall had prevented the French from taking control of Vietnam. Still the French had a considerable presence in the country and it got larger as the French Population that had been in China fled to a area where it might see French Military protection. Siam or Thailand had the British Empire forces to its West and South but it was able to influence to a greater degree the Cambodian and Laotian regimes.

The Empire of the Rising Sun had established itself on Formosa and Hainan Islands. Both islands had absorbed settlers from Japan and were producing food and Manufactured goods. In fact Formosa was now beginning to build ships.

The Empire of the Rising Sun had continued to move into parts of Southern China fighting the remains of the Imperial Chinese Army and Bandits and the Warlord of China. But they now came near to the territory controlled by the Royal Crown Colony of Hong Kong. There the Royal Governor had used the Brigade of troops that formed the garrison to help train a much larger British -Chinese Military force. Like the Ever Victorious Army last commanded by General Gordon.

After the Incident in the Marianas Islands the Emperor became very upset when he found out about what had happen. He informed the Navy that the incident had caused the lose of face by the nation. He had the Army commander in China send word to Hong Kong that the Empire of the Rising Sun would be dispatching a ship to Hawaii to apologize for what had happen.i

The Emperor was pleased that a war had been avoided. He was further pleased that the Hawaiians had not rejected the proposal to establish relations between the two nations. Talks would be held in Hong Kong between the two nations.

HONG KONG 1878-1887 The Royal Governor of the Crown Colony of Hong Kong was totally unprepared for the events of The Fall. He had an established civil service and had the benefit of a Military garrison of a reinforced Brigade. The Brigade consisted of a British Battalion, a Sikh Battalion and a Gurkha Battalion supported by a Royal artillery Battalion. There were a few small Royal Navy ships in port at the time of the fall and the Governor dispatched them with some merchant ships to evacuate the British Citizens from Shanghai. A lot of the citizens were eager to seek safety and took the chance to flee to a place of safety. Already Europeans were fleeing Peking.Order appeared to be collapsing. The Ambassador had made it to Shanghai with the few troops that guarded the Embassy. He was joined by the French and the other European diplomats.
In Hong Kong the Governor General declared Martial Law. His military commander knew that it would be some time before he would receive replacements and additional forces from India. So he proposed the recruitment of a force of what he referred to as the British-Chinese. He recommended the recruitment of 6 Battalions of Infantry, 1 of artillery and 2 of engineers. They called upon the European Population for experienced military veterans. There were not enough of them so that he had to draft personnel from the garrison to train and command them. As refugees arrived from Shanghai he was able to he fill in the hole and replace those men.
Time was something that he was short on. He had weapons but not enough to army everyone. Craftsmen began to copy the British rifles and uniforms came out of the shops.

Hong Kong 1878-1887 Part II The Commander of the Garrison at Hong Kong had been tasked by the Governor with taking More land to insure that the colony had the resources to survive. One of the fortune fact had been that General Gordon had been in China on Business when the Fall had happen. He had been offered the command of the British Chinese Hong Kong Brigade and had accepted the command. He had managed to get some of the officers who had served in the Ever Victorious Army to help shape the force. He had fought an engagement with the Chinese Bandits that were infiltrating the area and had won. He had also located some British made rifles to help arm his forces. By 1882 the Hong Kong Defense Zone had been established and any Chinese force avoided it. The former Ambassador to the Chinese Imperial Court had been stuck in the city and had joined the government.

Hong Kong 1878-1887 Part III Forces of the Empire of the Rising Sun mistakenly engaged one of the Outpost of the British-Chinese Defense Force. The battle went on for several days Until a relief force arrived from Hon Kong consisting of a Company of British troops and another Battalion of British-Chinese. Colonel Tokugawa of the Imperial Army ordered a cease fire and withdrew. He then sent a party under the flag of Truce to explain the mistake and inform the British Commander that a party from the Emperor would arrive to help insure that this never happen again. Two weeks latter the party arrived and talks took place setting up the boundaries between the sides. The Imperial Party derived an apology and paid reparations for the lost of life.

Hong Kong Part IV Sir John Hennessy served as the Royal Governor of Hong Kong from 1877-1886 when an Illness resulted in William Gordon Cameron of the Military serving as acting Governor for 9 months of 1887 when the Crown government in India finally sent a replacement . Sir William DesVoeux would serve as governor for the next four years. He arrived with Military reinforcements and diplomats from the Foreign Ministry They helped to reach a treaty with the Empire of the Rising Sun that settled the boundry issues and re-established trade on a more stable basis.

The Hong Kong Royal Crown Colony had gotten Larger as a result of the Fall. Defensive emplacements were built along the border. The Army of the Rising Sun also built some mainly to prevent the chaos in China from spreading into Hong Kong. In the period from 1886-1895 the Army of the Rising Sun fought 120 engagements with Chinese forces ranging from the Imperial Chinese Army to Warlord armies to bandits. The engagement at the village of Chin Lo became the most well known of them. A unit of the Rising Sun Army was ambushed near the village. Out of 40 men only 10 managed to survive the ambush. Five days latter 1200 troops from the 9th Infantry Rgt supported by cavalry and artillery attacked the village area. Colonel Namura reported the death of 74 armed Bandits and 110 civilians in the battle. The village was destroyed and the suvivors were moved to a new settlement in a secure area. Five months latter the area was swept by a Imperial Rising Sun Brigade and it became a point of contention between the two sides.

There was an effort by the Army of the Rising Sun to complete the job of establishing the control of the Imperial Government over China. It was believed by the Imperial General Staff that it would be impossible to control Northwestern China without making a massive effort.
