Pretty difficult to become a Senator when you don't worship the state religion's gods.
Herod the Great was appointed king of the jews by the roman senate? (he was jewish)
Could the question be altered to "what if the senare appointed Paul as king of the christians?" (next question would probably be why? And would this be the birth of the title of pope)

What? Christianity is a missionary religion. Judaism isn't and is very tied to an ethnic group and doesn't need missionaries. And even Judaism had many fights with the Roman state.
