Of Bits and Bytes: A Gaming TL

It would be ironic wouldn't it. ... Hmmm...

Well it is Sega. One can consistently count on them to make terrible choices lol. Incidentally they picked Hitachi for corporate Japanese stuff, not so much which one was better though the SH-4 was on par with PowerPC at the time; even if 3dfx hadn't screwed up in Sega's opinion odds were against the Blackbelt version of the DC. However if Nvidia had made a chip using triangles instead of quads then probably them for the GPU part, Sega wanted triangles and Nvidia foolishly went down quads for the second time (NV2, planned Saturn successor) before sorting themselves out and putting out the NV3/Riva series in 1997.

I'll note that one key problem with the Dreamcast was the shortage of NEC PowerVR 3D accelerators. Not only did NEC not produce what they were supposed to (hurting the DC early momentum in Japan), it also crippled any chance PowerVR had to compete in the PC space since their chips were going to the DC instead of discrete PC boards. (That said, Sega did pick the absolute best GPU of the era IOTL… it just came with unexpected downsides for both parties.)

Not that any of this means Sega would actually do enough better than OTL to stay in hardware, but one could easily muster up a crazy fast DC late 1997-early 1998 (Japan) and maybe no shortages/earlier launch/some more games helps somewhat.

Random game thoughts:
-Nicely done on Mario Kart naming, lol
-Does Shadows of the Empire turn out any better?
-How does TTL Doom compare to the excellent OTL Doom 64?
-Super happy to see Argonauts still involved with Nintendo, their OTL treatment was shabby and damn did they take a long fall on game quality. Proto-Retro kind of thing?

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm delving deeper into the Dreamcast for e3 (basically giving its CPU and gpu).
Shadows of the Empire turns out better, with more data the later levels turn out better. They did some more testing before releasing it and fixed the camera and controls.
Doom ttl is around the same, might be slightly better.
Argonaut basically is a proto-Retro. Nintendo's letting them release their Yoshi game ittl so they stay.
The ultra gets a metroid game so metroid prime is butterflied... as a metroid game.

Wow that is interesting.... what a tease.

Plus with cd the game like this pc version would get the movie scenes so that is a big plus too.

Part 5 - E3 1997

This E3 was one of the biggest yet. Nintendo, Sony, SEGA, and even 3DO were all there.

SEGA of America executive, Bernie Stolar, came out and introduced the Dreamcast. It was set to use a 3dfx Voodoo2 graphics chip and a Hitachi SH-4 CPU running at 200 MHz. The console was slated to be released late 1998. Team Andromeda’s Panzer Dragoon Saga was confirmed to be a launch title. He ended SEGA’s part of the show with the saying of “The Saturn is not our Future.”

Sony executives came out with members of third-party companies, revealing many exclusive titles to the PlayStation. These included:

  • Oddworld
  • Time Crisis
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Prey
  • Tomb Raider II
  • Duke Nukem 3D
  • Quake II

What surprised most audience members was 3DO. After Panasonic bailed out, causing the demise of the first system, the 3DO Company went quiet. They were planning, developing, and building their next console, the M2 Instead of relying on other companies to manufacture the system, the M2 was entirely 3DO made (with funds from EA). At its heart were 2 66 MHz PowerPC 602 CPUs. 3DO also revealed that they had bought out Crystal Dynamics, and the Gex series would be M2 exclusive.

While 3DO surprised most, Nintendo stole the show. They showcased many planned Ultra titles including:

  • F-Zero X
  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • Conker’s Quest
  • Tetrisphere
  • GoldenEye 007
  • Robotech: Crystal Dreams
  • “Zelda 3D”

Capcom also announced Resident Evil 2, showcasing clips of the game. It is a Ultra and PSX only multi-platformer.

PC games like Unreal and Half-Life also gained interest.

The event is notable for being a helping hand with the rise real-time shooters, with multiple titles of the genre being shown here.

An American GPU and a japanse CPU, that is something symbolic as means both sega finally are cooperating for this, good luck sega you will need it.

So 3DO will try again in the market...you will need even more luck that sega...good luck.

Well Nintendo make a good E3, and Zelda Hype will be real(without the issue of storage, maybe Robotech Crystal Dreams would be released? if they got animated cutscenes would be a hit), pretty nice e3, wow seems once a lifetime when this one happened.

Yeah. 3DO is going to have a much, much, much tougher time than SEGA, breaking through the market. (Maybe they will find more third-party support this time around)
SEGA's American and Japanese divisions are finally co-operating (sort of). How much will this help? Will they survive? Who knows? (Minus me, again)
The Zelda Hype is definitely going to be real. ("Zelda 3D" is going to bigger than OOT, more characters and a new area. No spoilers on the new area though. So, the Zelda Hype is going to be real. (Demo discs should come next quarter/update)
As for Robotech. That's the plan.
Thanks!

Also. A question. Did Sony produce any records for game music OTL?
For their first party games they released under their own internal label(Sony-Victor,Sonic-Columbia, among others) third party games published by themselves so in a way yeah, but not a formal division but under their Sony Music Umbrella Record Companies.

Ah okay. Thanks! (That is really helpful. I have plans for video game music. :) )

That is Nice, Nintendo otl used third party labels like pony crayon and others, here they've an relationship with Matsushita-Panasonic so that helps too.

Part 3 - A Fresh Start

Quarter 1 of 1997 bore fruit for the Nintendo Ultra. It received titles like:
  • NBA Hangtime
  • Doom 3
  • Blast Corps
  • Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
  • FIFA Soccer Ultra
In March, the Nintendo Ultra was also released in Europe for 225 euros. Launch titles include:
  • Ultra Mario World
  • Pilotwings Ultra
  • Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey
  • Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
  • FIFA Soccer Ultra
  • Turok: Dinosaur Hunter

February 1997 was when STI and POV finally released Sonic X-Treme to Saturn and PC audiences.
While it was the first 3D Sonic, it failed to match the popularity and ratings of past Sonic games. It was generally disliked by SEGA fans and critics, scoring 5.5/10 on IGN.
The plot follows Sonic saving the jungle planet Jadegully from Dr. Robotnik’s rebuilt Death Egg (dubbed by fans as the “Death Egg II”). The Death Egg II has enough gravity to rip planets from their orbits, causing armageddon to victim planets. In order to save the planet, Sonic must free the Mips, the planet’s residence, from captivity, while allying himself with Tiara Bobowski.
It failed to match the sales of Crash Bandicoot or Ultra Mario World and is best known for being the “Saturn’s last stand” by gamers alike. At the end of the Saturn’s lifetime, it sold 250,000 copies.
The failure of the new Sonic game caused companies to lose hope in the Saturn, the console war was now between Nintendo and Sony, SEGA was just left behind in their dust.

While Nintendo was still going strong, the PlayStation had found more support, receiving the titles of:
  • Independence Day
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Square was left in turmoil on who to support, Nintendo or Sony? They acquired Tobal No. 1’s production company, DreamFactory, in February, and it was clear that Tobal would remain Ultra-exclusive. But what about Final Fantasy?

What Square needed was time to decided. So, they decided to delay FFVII to give them time on who to support.

While Final Fantasy and Tobal received full support from Square, there was a game that didn’t. Tetsuya Takahasi’s production company #3, “Monolith”, had been working on a title set for 1998. His company only received half the funds Final Fantasy and Tobal did. Less than needed.

While, Square didn’t seem to care. Another did…

I made a mistake on the topic of Doom. (I didn't realize Doom 64 was its own game. Fixed it to be named Doom 3. OTL Doom 3 might not exist or will become Doom 4.)

Good question.
Sonic got close to death with X-Treme. He might be revitalized in 1999, when the next title is released. (For the Dreamcast)

I think it might become Doom 3 as a like of Throwback to both PC and N64 before Jumping to Quake, Doom 3 might did become 4 and having the number will increase massively the sales for n64 and PC too(was strange they never ported it to pc, seems ID like nintendo that much)

So is Independence Day supposed to be a killer app ITTL? IOTL it was pretty bad (got an AVGN video and everything!). It's got POTENTIAL to be a great game, but a lot of movies do, and most companies don't put in the effort needed to make them good.

Independence Day isn't a killer app per say, but it's kind of better. (Sort of... the levels are designed slightly better. But, are so hard it makes the game almost unplayable)

Why final fantasy VII delayed and @Beta.003 always put when the game was released first in any regions, plus butterflies make the PS1 Calendar pretty barren till end year(when their big hitters and ITTL FFVII might release) so yeah and if improved might be something for PS1 owners.
