As is well known Italy of 9th century was partly controlled by Arabs. I mean not only Sicily bat also part of southern and central Italy.
At the end of 9th century, Arabs were pushed out by Byzantium from southern Italy and at the beginning of 10th century papa pushed them out from Lacium.
I would like to have Muslim southern and central Italy (including Rome) at least until mid 10th century or may be longer. Of course, it would be epic battles between Arabs and Ottonid Germans )))
What do you think which events might let to such TL?
Civil war in Byzantium after coup of Basil Macedonian? Or just fails during battles with Arabs like real fails in Crete? Something else?
