Map Challenge - Alternate Cold War (WW2 POD)

As map challenges seem to be making a comeback, thought I'd post this.

It's a map I made for the Map Contest a while back, depicting an alternate Cold War in the 1970s, with a POD sometime in WW2.

Any thoughts on what that POD(s) might be? I only had vague ideas myself when I made the map.

Looks like the Mediterranean Strategy was used in Europe...

Apparently Israel got crushed by its neighbors, most likely at birth.

Perhaps the blacks rise up in South Africa, tired of Apartheid, confining the whites to a small enclave on the coast?

India might have gone too far in one of its wars with Pakistan, leading the US to interfere to protect its ally and driving India into the socialist camp.

First thing good map Thande.

A couple of things of interest: Russian occupied Japan, Russian occupied Denmark, US allied Balkans, and US allied Arab Republic.

My guess is Japan at some point does attack the Soviets at Hitler's request (thus their gains in northern Japan at the end of the war). Maybe because the Germans initially do even better (thus enticing the Japanese) than OTL but have an even more disastrous outcome like Stalingrad x 3 which results in the Soviets in Denmark and NW Germany.

Also the US pushes into Bohemia (maybe a tank drive by Patton) with additional US forces coming up from a the Balkans (a more disastrous collapse of Germany and withdrawal of certain parts of the Balkans might have made landings there easier and desirable for the US).

Also with a larger Soviet presence in Germany the US backs the idea of the Arab Republic and puts restraint on the Nationalistic China (Manchuria is in the Soviet sphere now...please don't start WWIII now that WWII is just finished...thanks).

Lets see! Spain joins Hitler in war and is crushed by the American led forces. Sometime in 1943, the US decides to invade the Balkans rather than Italy and has a strong foothold there by the time the Soviets break out, and drive further west into Germany.

The post war Europe map is drawn differently, Italy votes to go Socialist but does not go communist, probably part of the non-aligned movement, eventually anyway. Maybe even have a post-war provision added to their constitution forbidding them from making alliances.

Maybe Hitler declares war on Turkey or there is some sort of communist revolution? Not quite sure of this one.

Israel never comes about or is destroyed during the Suez Canal War and there is a union with Syria, Jordan, Palestine, and Egypt, maybe Jerusalem is the capital of this Arabian Union?

Britain and France get angry at the United States for not supporting them in the Suez Canal War and NATO Breaks apart. There is some bad blood between the UK and US, with the US showing support for Ireland in the troubles there, and Rhodesia when they secede from Britain. The Commonwealth forms an alliance sort of like NATO.

Charles de Gualle does not want to be a British or American "puppet" so he starts France off on its own course forming yet another power bloc.

The Soviets get northeastern Europe as their allies, the US gets southeastern Europe and Spain, as well as a good part of Latin America.

I'm unsure of the specifics, but I'm definately thinking WWII was much shorter. Otherwise, I wouldn't think there would be any hope in Britain and France retaining so much of their empires.

(EDIT: If the background is a hint, perhaps nuclear weapons were developed, and used, much earlier?)

It would also explain the absence of Israel.

Can't have an alternate Cold War thread without a ritual denunciation of Wallace: I belive it's in the charter somewhere...

Bruce

Not true. Wallace won't be blamed in an alternate cold war thread where the capitalists are more successful earlier:p

I see that Rhodesia is still called Rhodesia, is still made up of OTL Zimbabwe and Zambia and is a US ally. Possibly the SA whites that didn't leave for the Cape polity went to Rhodesia, giving it a bigger white population. It would also appear that the new African People's Republic invaded Botswana. Botswana in out OTL has always leaned towards the US and UK.

I do have to ask but since Italy is socialist what happen to the vatican.

Italy is Socialist not Communist so the Holy See should be fine, it is after all a foreign territory. If Italy gets all nationalist on us it will also go after San Marino.

A neutral Benelux is hard to get after a German occupation. Actually getting a true Benelux country is pretty hard. Perhaps the Germans didn't invade them, maybe the allies attacked Germany before Germany could attack France. In that case the benelux notice that being neutral is a good idea, but find themselves isolated after the war and start looking at each other for help.

France and the UK attacking first could explain why they still have empires, but not why the US is so influential. Why would the US get involved in a war in europe when there is no need for them and why would the US have so much influence in (southern) Europe when they didn't figh a war there.
hmmm, perhaps after defeating Germany, France and the UK were attacked by the USSR and because of the involvement of the US the war stabilized at these borders.
