He didn't actively seek to join German side. Russian peasent led German patrol to his hide out.
Whatever he told Germans afterward is, well questionable, did he do it for survival or because of change in believes?
After all we know how well Germans treaded Soviet POWs and how good they had it in German captivity. Definitely for Germans it was propaganda coup which they... didn't explore properly because of their own flawed ideology.
McArthur didn't refised evacuation and till today even on this forum there are dicussions how he abandoned his soldiers.

But anyway there were other great Soviet commanders. Vatutin comes to mind. He did reasonable well in 1941. He was succeeded by Zhukov as commander of 1st Ukrainian Front. If he didn't died of injuries inflicted by UPA partisans, we would hear more about him. Vasilevsky, Tolbuchin, Malinovski, Konev, Petrov... many others.

Sure, but he refused escape when the option presented itself.

Who knows what was really in his heart, we just know what he did. Yeah I don't buy into the MacArthur hate on leaving PI, but he does deserve a ton of hate for other reasons.

Родина никогда бы не победил фашизм без меня!

In all seriousness though, Zhukov was a military genius and was responsible for the majority of the Soviets' major victories on the Eastern Front. Without him the Soviets are at worst in danger of defeat, at best stand to lose even more men in pointless offensives led by incompetent generals.
