Fire by Night: The Great Patriotic Air War

Coming soon: What if the Red Air Force had been prepared for Barborossa? Even if they couldn't prevent the invasion, what would happen if two collassol air forces met over the hundreds of miles of Soviet frontier.

This is the story of the struggle to survive for the Russian Air Force.

Part 1 will be posted today.

Prologue: The aircraft
The 79th Belarussian Air Wing*, the center of this story, was equipped with three kinds of aircraft.

1. The IL-2 ground attack aircraft, also known as the flying tank. It was used to attack soldiers and amour on the ground, and is pretty much the Stuka (JU-87) of the Russians.

2. The Yak-1 and Yak 3 fighter airplanes. They were light, well armored, and easy to maintain.

3. The IL-4 twin-engine bombers. It had a crew of 4, and could carry a large load of bombs.

The 79th was divided into several squadrons.

Fighter 1 (Истребитель 1)
6 Yak 1 Fighters
2 Yak 3 Fighters

Fighter 2 (Истребитель 2)
4 Yak 1 Fighters
4 IL-2 GAA

Ground-Attack 1 (Штурмового 1)
8 IL-2 GAA

Bomber A (бомбардировщик)
2 IL-4 Bombers

Bomber B (бомбардировщик B)
2 IL-4 Bombers

*Fictional division, made for the purpose of this story

If there is a problem with the way I organized the air wing, feel free to correct me.

Well one thing is for sure, the luftwaffe will dedicate more of their resources into Barbarossa and less on bombing Britan, what with the USSR having a better Air Force than OTL
