Ethnographic Map Questions

1. What colors should be used?
1a. Use standard country colors where available, ex. French Blue for Frenchmen, German Grey for Germans, etc;
1b. Use similar colors for related ethnic groups (people speaking similar languages), ex. different shades of a color for Romance people, different shades of another color for Germanic people, etc;
1c. Choose more contrasting colors for ethnic groups in mixed areas;
1d. Other colors...

2. What should be shown on the map?
2a. Only the plurality for each area (solid color);
2b. Absolute majority areas (solid color) and mixed areas (diagonal lines of both colors);
2c. Different shades / combination of colors depending on the actual percentage;
2d. Other options...

3. What criterion should be used?
3a. Self declared ethnicity (if known / if asked / if any / if available as a notion in that area or time period...);
3b. Spoken language / dialect;
3c. Official opinion;
3d. Other criteria...

4. What "borders" should be used?
4a. The smallest administrative unit available in the area depending on the scale of the map (ex. color each county);
4b. The smallest areas with available data;
4c. No predefined borders -- make new ones corresponding to the ethnic distribution;
4d. Other...

5. Other advice / ideas...

Note: I have seen lots of ethnographic maps.

Thank you.

I'd like to say that I would go for a combination of similar colours for language groups *but* contrast in heavily mixed areas. It depends on the exact map you see.

Taking your opinions into consideration, I produced this:

Thank you.

Will you use Latino or Hispanic? Can you consider "mixed White-Amerindian"? Because, outside USA, Latino is easily confused with Romance and Hispanic with Spaniard.

USA and its racial constructs do not exist yet (as of 1653) and will probably never exist in the TL of this map.
