France spent a brief amount of time as a republic during and after the Franco-Prussian War, but after the Legitimists and the Orléanists worked out a compromise, the monarchy was quickly restored. The childless Henri, Comte de Chambord became ruler of France, with Louis-Philippe, Comte de Paris as his heir, and France remains a monarchy today.

What if France had remained a republic for whatever reason? Could the French Third Republic have lasted?

There will be no "relatively peaceful" resolution of Alsace-Lorraine by turning them into a separate, independent Duchy when a Junior French Prince running away with a German Princess and hides there.

Taking into an account that all its previous republican history was a mess, retaining that thoroughly compromised system look improbable. However, if this happened, one may expect that the incompetent demagogues would start with destroying the French military and then get France involved into a major war.

OOC: Which german princess? there alot inside the empire, Unrionically that was Wilhelm II plan give it as a Great Duchy to both Franz Fernindand Kids.

Dunno how much would change prior to the German War, but King Philippe VIII obviously wouldn't be able to spin Bavaria or Silesia off to his Hapsburg allies or take a chunk the Rhine to limit the German Empire.

This could of course limit the renewal of the Anglo-French rivalry, but hey, Germany was always a bigger threat than Britian
