This is something I've been curious about, did the British ever make any serious attempt to colonize the region now known as Patagonia, if not how come?

Argentina already allowed British people to settle there in large numbers, and it was also a close economic partner of the UK so no use antagonizing someone to gain something from them (settlement provileges) that you have already.
It's a desert by the end of the world.
The Spanish knew very well the area since the 16th century, but the Argentinian government only started to truly colonize it by the 1880's.
So was Australia. Argentina is closer, however. Seems like a fitting place to stuff all their criminals.
