AHC/WI: Bob Dole in '88

Though he would eventually win the Republican presidential nomination in 1996, Bob Dole ran a fairly strong primary campaign in 1988. Dole lost out to sitting Vice President George HW Bush, but not before besting him in Iowa and giving him a close race in New Hampshire. So...

1) What PODs could cause Dole to win the Republican nomination that year? Would it be as simple as winning in New Hampshire, then using that as a springboard to do better in other early contests and build up some insurmountable momentum?

2) Assuming Dole does win the Republican nomination, who might he pick for his running mate? How would the general election go? Is Dole liable to do better or worse than Bush did against Michael Dukakis or any of the other plausible Democratic nominees?

3) Assuming Dole wins the general election, how does his first term go, both domestically and in foreign affairs? How does he handle the collapse of the Soviet Union, as well as the crisis in the Persian Gulf? Are we still likely to go to war with Iraq?

4) How does the 1992 race go? Would Dole likely still provoke a strong right-wing primary challenge, be it from Buchanan or someone else? Would the Democratic field be wider or narrower? Does Perot run?

This reminds me of Alternate History Hub’s video on what if Bush Sr won instead of Reagan.

How would Bob Dole deal with foreign affairs?

Vice President George H. W. Bush, is implemented into the Iran-Contra Affair, becoming the highest casualty of the affair and although, Reagan offered him a Presidential Pardon, it killed Bush's political career leading to Bob Dole, storming the primaries.

Possible running mate:
- Jack Kemp, Representative from New York (his running mate in 1996)
- Warren Rudman, Senator from New Hampshire
- Al D'Amato, Senator of New York

- Jim Thompson, Current Governor of Illinois
- John Kasich, Representative from Ohio
- Arlen Specter, Senator from Pennsylvania

- George Deukmejian, Current Governor and former Attorney General of California
- Bob Dornan, Representative from California
- Pete Wilson, Senator of California

Dole would want either a North-Eastern or Western state, running mate, to help balance the ticket. I believe, Michael Dukakis, would still win the nomination, and would lose due to his faults OTL, so Dole, would either, do the same OTL or a little better, as no links to previous scandals.

3) Assuming Dole wins the general election, how does his first term go, domestically?

Potential Cabinet:
Secretary of State: John Connally
Secretary of the Treasury: Frederick B. Dent
Secretary of Defense: Bill Brock

- Howard Baker
