In parts of Africa Europeans still stayed after they no longer were a part of a colony. What would it take for the same to happen in india

The UK breaking India into numerous states to play off one another continuing divide and rule. They're independent...but they aren't.
The population in India was much bigger. There were many who did stay, Thing is in percentage terms it was tiny, even if it might be relatively big in numbers.,

The British "colonization" in India was more like a bureaucratic class ruling over a native population, I can only think of a Chinese dynasty has a similar example. The British colonization in Africa was primarily composed of settlers who explored native labor and lands. It's just different.
Like Lalli said, goa is a nice example as it stood under portuguese control until 1961. Portugal had other holdings but they were lost earlier, Goa was just the major.
In absolute terms? Begin serious transitioning to Dominion status in the pre-WWI era if not earlier, so that there is enough institutional continuity and lack of bad blood for civil servants, military officers, businesspeople, etc. who are willing to treat at least upper-class "natives" as equals/superiors to hang around without issue.
