AHC: A Cassette Futurist Late 20th Century?

From the period of 1979 all the way up to 2000 science fiction authors, directors and artists envisioned a future both familiar yet alien to us. With such films as Alien, Blade Runner and even Ghost in the Shell describing a future of advance genetic engineering, cybernetics that bridge the gap between man & machine and even regular commercial space flight. Yet at the same CRT screens, VCR players and yes even Cassette Tapes were still the norm in an advance world where what it meant to be human was questioned more than ever.

So the question is how could we make the future originally envisioned during the 80's and 90's of OTL a reality in the final decades of an alternate twentieth century without it being ASB?

Heh, yes I recall an episode of UFO where the protagonists apartment is raided and his pride-and-joy slide projector gets broken in the far-future of the 1980s :)

Do you have any specific examples of technology you would like to see in that timeframe? Most of the things in 80s science fiction are still not available to us so it's impossible to say if they could be made available in the past. It's one thing to speculate on whether existing technology like cars, planes, and rockets could have been invented earlier - it's something else entirely to speculate on technologies that don't even exist yet.

Or are you referring more to the artistic and philosophical themes that run in those sci-fi stories?

Nah show how much sci-fi is just the present with some crazy ideas, CD onward where more reliable than casette, more if we still want physical media

Perhaps we could have a more intense space race with their having been a mars landing or a full on moon base shortly after Apollo 11, leading to certain technologies advancing in advance of OTL.

What are some modern or near future technologies that would be theoretical possible to products back in the 70's to 90's period? Maybe an alternate space race could lead to their being manned Mars missions and lunar bases by the 90's?

From what I understand a lot of alternate energy tech was technically available back then, and just not used due to cost and oil lobbying.
