Abbasid Restoration in Egypt

After the Mongols had sacked Baghdad, the remaining Abbasids had holed themselves up in Egypt where they remained only as religious authorities as opposed to the secular power held by the Mamelukes. How is it possible for the Abbasids' authority to resurge to a point where the Caliph can usurp control over Egypt from the Mamelukes?

By that time the Mamelyuk power was very firm. It was a system, it was a tradition, it was the essence of the entity. It was kind of a caste, which was ruled by one of their own.
Abbasids taking power was possible only during interregnum for a very short time (for keeping order and avoid disturbances) - when the previous mamkyuk ruler was already dead and the mamlyuks hadn't decided yet on a new mamlyuk ruler.

To be fair, there were Mamluk factions that favored the Abbasid being placed as figure heads and rulers of Egypt. There was a short period where this was the case, before this coup by the Abbasids was counter couped.
