A Firm Hand- A British Political Timeline

Chapter Ten:
At the beginning of January 1985, inflation in the UK rose to 4.8%, putting the squeeze on many households. The government promised to do something about it in the next budget. The Home Secretary, Neil Kinnock, in March also stated his belief that devolution for Scotland and Wales was something that should "definitely be looked into". Devolution was very much a topic in Britain that most were against. Many assumed it would precipitate the break up of the United Kingdom and it was believed to be a ploy to steal DSP voters.

Hattersley and Kinnock had started to attempt to implement more radical policies to steal DSP votes

With tensions high in America due to a lagging economy, John Hinckley Jr., a disgruntled 29 year old, attempted to assassinate the newly Innaugarated President, George Bush. The assassin missed Bush but injured an escorting police officer. John was subdued by members of the public and sent to the electric chair in 1986.

Summer 1985 saw the outbreak of violence in London as the National Front clashed with antifascist protestors the streets. The police were often caught in between as they attempted to break up the fighting, and over August 1985 some 300 people were injured. In the October of that year the ”National Party” was founded and gained the endorsement of Enoch Powell, who defected but announced he would be stepping down as an MP at the next election. With both the Democratic Socialist and National Parties taking chunks out of both Labour and the Conservatives the chances of a hung parliament grew.

“Enoch is right” and “Enoch is right, Michael is correct” were slogans used at the protests

With declining health and polls, Peter Carrington had began to wonder if he had the strength to carry on as leader, but was persuaded by party members to stay on although his long term prospects weren’t clear to anyone.

* Since I wasn’t convinced by the SDP split I had it changed to a Hard Left split from Labour

I was going to say, you must have misread as there is no SDP in this timeline. But then I realise the last two TL posts have been edited. I didn't see what they were, but presumably it removes the SDP and replaces them with this alt-DSP split for Labour.

Which is almost as unlikely. Left leaning members and MPs within Labour prefer to simply wait (look at Corbyn under Blair) and take the party when the time is right. I can't see Foot, who had been Labour since the 1940s, splitting off. He'd just bide his time and hope Benn would take over in the late 1980s.

Yes the edits were complete u-turns. I do think the edits make more sense than the original trajectory.

Why would John Hinckley be sentenced to death for trying to assassinate Bush when IOTL he was sentenced to life (mental defect defense) and eventually released? It sounds like he did not even hit Bush and did not kill anyone.
