Map of the Fortnight: Topic thread

For Want of an Ape:
A world where Humanity either did'nt evolve, or was wiped out before it could gain a foothold, in which another species took its place.

I had an idea for this MoF that was just like that, after I had posted my other map.

We shall rise again!
An ancient empire, collapsed since at least 200 years, suddenly reappers, thanks to the action of a state/general/uprising, etc.

Help yourself
A important state was defeated and Treaty of Versailles-ized, aka, all sides are trying to take that they want and the rivalty between them are the main obstacle.

Unpopular Rearrival
An ancient region or nation reappears in the 19th or 20th centuries along linguistic, cultural, or religious lines. Upon its recreation, it is attacked by neighboring states, who hate it. Show a map of this recreated nation, either at its recreation, or after the war. The nation may or may not have a powerful nation supporting it.

It's monday, isn't it time for the new contest?

It's Tuesday here in Glorious Britannia, but the next contest is long overdue. Who's managing this stupid challenge anyway? He really needs to get his arse in gear.

Oh, that would be me. :(

Well, the new challenge and so forth will be up in a moment as I'm in the process of writing it up now. It would have all been up earlier, only I was busy ("busy" is code for "playing EU3").

I apologise for only getting round to announcing the winner of the challenge before the previous challenge now, but you have to understand that I suffer from a rare and acute case of being very lazy and also forgetting to do things that I am meant to be doing. However, without further ado, I shall now announce the winner of MoF 19: IN ABSENTIA. And the winner is:

tormsen

tormsen's map pushed the boundaries of this challenge by showing a successor to a once powerful Carthaginian empire in South America. His creativity and originality won him the contest, and it probably would have won him a respectably sized trophy too if this wasn't taking place entirely on the internet. Well done, that man! :)

Now, with that out of the way, I can bring you further good news! No, Wales hasn't sunken under the ocean (much to my continued chagrin), but the entries thread for MoF 21: VOX POPULI has been posted, as has the voting thread for MoF 20: Through a Glass, Darkly! Huzzah!

Andalusia Plebiscites, 1898

So, here's where I talk a bit about the backstory behind my entry.

A while back, I had this idea for a Republic of Granada. Backstory goes as follows: some time in the 1300s, a Granadan monarch converts himself and his family to Catholicism. After a civil war, the monarch's faction wins, preserving the kingdom as a Catholic state - albeit one with significant Jewish and Muslim populations. Still, since it's Catholic, Granada is not subject to the Reconquista. Over time, Granada pushes into northern Morocco; Morocco itself is eventually colonized directly by France (rather than becoming a protectorate). The Granadan royal family is overthrown in the mid-19th century, and a republic is formed.

Generally, history proceeds somewhat like OTL, though Granada, especially the region across the Straits of Gibraltar, serves as a sort of 'escape valve' for the Moriscos and conversos - and, later on, for Spanish liberals. Also, Gibraltar (part of Granadan territory) does not become British; perhaps Britain retains Minorca?

I realize the map is kinda ugly, but it's my first effort at MotF. I plan on doing more for MotF in the future.

Some idea:

A detailed map of a nation beholden to a totally non-OTL ideology

After the Wank-With a post-1700 PoD, choose a country, wank it to the plausible extreme, then make a map showing the area afer said country fell to war/revolt/etc

A map showing the spread of a religion

Re-Colonisation-A second wave of colonisation

Ozymandian Challenge-Show the remnants of a once-mighty empire

Backstory behind my entry:

Some unknown POD leads to conservative rule by 2020. They decentralize government, and propose a radical plan to make the states more "fair," by splitting them up based on major geographical differences in culture and politics. My map was meant to look like something you might see on Wikipedia.

Similar referenda were held in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. New York was split between Upstate New York and New York City.

It Can't Happen Here

A map depicting the rise of some unpleasant and pervasive ideology.
Death in a Mini:
A map showing either during or after a conflict in which a nation successfully beats a nation larger than it (territorially and population-wise).

I like these ideas, though I really want to rename "Help Yourself" to "All You Can Annex Buffet", and I'd like to give "Death in a Mini" less of a comical name; something like "David and Goliath" or "The Mouse that Roared".

What, none of my ideas?:p

Giveth and Taketh Away:

This one has two possibilities, which do you think is more interesting?

Either -

1) An important historical figure of your choice who died young in OTL lives on, but to 'balance' this you have to kill one of his young contemporaries who lived long in OTL.

2) Same thing but with scientific discoveries - something important such as the steam engine is discovered 100 years earlier than OTL, but to balance this something else such as the Voltaic pile is discovered 100 years later.

Shambles of the Avarice

Create a map depicting the aftermath of the discovery and exploitation of an invaluable resource. This resource could be an OTL resource such as gold or diamonds found in a place where they do not actually exist. The resources could also be of a completely imaginative origin.

(ie: Middle East level Oil in the Balkans)

From an old bit of ASB-ishness:

World with Roman Empire, US, and Soviet Union co-existing in 2010.

- Empire can be wherever you want, but must be a direct historical descendant of the Roman Empire. Must have no more than one religious tranformation from old agey Rome (Can have Pagan/Christian or Pagan/some other sort of Pagan or even Pagan/Islam equivalent, but no Pagan/Christian/Muslim allowed)

-US must be a federal democracy created by colonization

-Soviet Union must be a militant socialist dictatorship, although the locals may have a quite different word for it.

- The three must be the three strongest nations in this world, and have international influence roughly in the same ballpark (no greater disparity than, say, US and USSR circa 1968)

Could they be analogs to the U.S. and Soviet Union? For example, a federalized democracy of some sort in the Americas that declares independence from the Roman Empire?
