A map of Europe if there hadn't been a Roman Empire (or Republic for that matter), complete w/ Etruscans, Carthaginians, and Celtic tribes (Thermoize invading Germanic/Slavic/Turkic tribes as you see fit:D)

Ok, a "Curious Notions" type world: the Germans now think that breaking up the US after the Thirty Hours War was probably a bad idea, but now they're stuck with keeping the US diasarmed and fragmented. With their hands very full in Africa, Europe, and the Americas, the Germans are generally willing to let the four great powers of Asia go to hell their own way (the Chinese are an ally, in any event) as long as they don't try to violate the German empire's monopoly on nuclear weapons.

The new government discovered that when you play the populist role by trying to do something about the wealthy German minority's domination of the local economy, there may be Consequences. Also, the lobbying by the pro-annexation local Germans took place at a time of rather giddy triumphalism, when it had not yet sunk in just how big a pain in the ass running half the world would be.

Balkanized USA, but a little different.

The CSA gains independence after the Civil War, Deseret gets it's independence somehow, and takes over a few Mormon minority states. Texas gets independence from the CSA, takes over New Mexico and Arizona, establishes the Empire of Texas (I wrote Kingdom, since Empire of Texas might play too much into current stereotypes), they win territory from the CSA and some other nations.

The USA has a socialist revolution, which makes some go "VLUH I'm not gonna get involved in that" and declare independence. Nations form up...wars happen, and by whenever, we have a balkanized, cool looking USA.

I got the idea for the Texan Empire from the Amarr Empire in EVE Online...douchebags who think their entitled to rule everyone.

I might make this a Hears of Iron III mod.

Being from Texas, there's nothing that ruins a good North America map more than an ugly Texas. And that sir, is one ugly Texas! :p

Also, the prospect of there being a "King" of Texas would be enough to make most Texans pull out their shotguns and start marching to the capital.

Why did Prussia get Lauenburg?
I guess Prussia just took Swedish Pommerania in TTL - "those democratic Swedes are not to hold land in Germany!" - Metternich.

Why have Hanover gone Italian??? :D

Population. In a democratic state, if you have more people then the other, you have a fair chance of defeating him.
Sweden has a fair bit more people then Norway, so...
Blame the base map for Lauenburg.
Yes, that might have been the reason... or the United Kingdom could have given it up in exchange for being promised that the German states wouldn't 'intervene' to 'restore order', and taking the opportunity to gobble up, amongst other things, Swedish Pommerania.

Yup. Russia was in a far worse state then OTL- altough, I should note, I've retconned it so that they gained Krakow.
