Map of the Fortnight: Main thread

Its "an utopia". Apart from that, I hope this one will get good ones, and hopefully most won't be evil people's utopias.

Given that I've only ever heard the word pronouced as "you-topia" and never "oo-topia," I would disagree. (It's like people think English has rules or something. Hah!)

As Kaiphranos said, English doesn't really have hard and fast rules, but I subscribe to the idea that "an" is only used if the noun starts with a vowel sound - or if you want to sound pretentious. :p

I got around to making a roundel template for a Map Duel for a Map of the Month round between two teams of two people, which means I can do the victory announcements for MotM 2! I would've done it earlier, but I decided to read through Alex Richards and Reagent's timeline before writing up the announcement - and their timeline is very... detailed. :p Anyway, the winners are:

EFjPAIU.png

It's a tie between two teams, with Jonathan Edelstein and Kaiphranos on one team and Alex Richards and Reagent on the other!

Jonathan Edelstein and Kaiphranos' excellently written timeline followed the history of an alternate West Africa where an earlier discovery of iron working and steel caused the rise of a native empire and, with that empire's fall, set in motion a series of events that caused much of Africa - West and East - to develop states, complex societies, and religions much earlier than in OTL. The beautiful map shows us Africa at the height of this native Nok Empire, where early African states connect a system of trade routes from the Niger, across the Sahel, North to Egypt, and South to the Great Lakes.

Alex Richards and Reagent's entry also concerned Africa, but instead of ancient West Africa, they focus on 19th and 20th century South Africa, showing us a world where the French got to Australia before Britain, making the Cape the British Empire's designated penal colony. This simple change causes a multitude of differences with OTL, ultimately resulting with a large Federation of South Africa which counts British, Boer, Portuguese, Griqua, and various native African states amongst its members. The map is no less detailed than the timeline, showing this federation and its numerous provinces in all their glory.

This round doesn't end with this tie, of course; instead a Map Duel for Honour and Glory must now be fought! The two teams have been challenged to make a one post extension to their timelines and to make a map illustrating their extensions - once these are done we shall vote on which is best, and we can finally see which team is truly MotM 2's Honoured Winner!

Looks awesome.

When you get around to doing the roundel for Sunshine and Lollipops, I suggest a centered lollipop that looks like a sun, and eight different "utopias" around it.

The "sunbeams" (and the lollipop stick) could be dividing the utopias.

Here's a drawing to show you what I mean. The different colours inbetween the sunbeams represent different utopias.

Alternatively, the lollipop could be in front of the sun.

The main problem with that is that it would require drawing eight distinct utopias in very small spaces. It'd be easier to draw a single utopia - I'm thinking of drawing a candyland, like Sugar Rush from Wreck-It Ralph.

I was thinking that at first! Sounds good!

Maybe you could have a floating lollipop as the sun? :p

Love it.

Maybe you could try to make the drawing look a little childish and rough? Is that possible?

Sorry for the late reply. I don't think I'd be able to do childish and rough without just making it look bad, I'm afraid.

Anyway we're about halfway through MotF 103's entry period right now, so it's about time to start discussing the challenges we'd like to see for MotF 104! Feel free to suggest new ideas if you have any, or resuggest old ideas you like from within this thread or the list of suggestions on the Wiki. And remember you're all free to express their opinion on as many challenge suggestions and in as much detail as you like - but do remember to embolden the titles of challenge suggestions you mention so I can easily pick them out when looking over the thread! :)

I'd like to go for something quite broad so that more people can enter as we're all busy again and I'd like to see a lot of entries. Here's my suggestion:

Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death! / Live Free or Die

Make a map showing an ongoing revolt or rebellion.

Real men nominate

The Enemy of My Enemy

Make a map showing what happens when, instead of capitalists and socialists fight against fascists, this world has fascists and capitalists team up against the socialists.

Now for something completely different: roundels. Not about Krall being overdue, but I recently played the current beta of MiniMetro and it urged me to make a face in a round.

I tried to create a roundel, but it just ain't the real thing. And my "old" idea still looks better to me.
EDIT: Got rid of the overlap AR suggested me to remove.
