And the Notes. Also yes this is being crossposted from SV. Thanks to EBR for all their help.
  1. REALLY hoping they can conquer mainland Greece before the Eruption of Thera.
  2. The Back-up plan in case every falls apart on Crete
  3. New Sparta: about as brutal to native Greeks as the old Sparta would have been. Previous ruler tried to make himself King but he got laughed at and deposed, currently lead by an self-appointed council.
  4. Arcadia: A splinter faction from New Sparta. Leadership originally created a cult centered around Artemis, Pan and some of the other Mycenean gods in an attempt to pacify the natives, much of the leadership soon started to buy into this cult and now the leader has declared herself the High Priestess of Artemis. Really hates Sparta
  5. Mycenae: The Lion Gate hasn’t fallen yet. Largely surviving because most of their neighbors hate each other, that and the cannons supplied by that one amateur Gunsmith turned wealthiest man in the city.
  6. New America: White Supremacist State, luckily for the natives Greeks are “White Enough” for their conquerors
  7. The People’s Union: Started as an earnest attempt to make a near Anarchist Commune, very rapidly turning into an (admittedly still socially progressive) Strong-man state.
  8. Ephyra: Basically kept alive by the people’s union so their warriors can fight the ever growing bandit problem in the disputed regions. Not sure what this Socialism thing is
  9. Republic of Greece: “A Bastion of sanity in a world gone mad”. A Republic where every citizen has the right to vote and hold office. Notably natives aren’t counted as citizens.
  10. The Dimini League: Loves American guns, hates everything else about them.
  11. The Kingdom of God (Polygyros): Split off from the Republic of Greece when they realized they had no interest in forcing the natives to convert to Christianity.
  12. Probably the most bitterly contested waters in the region right now
  13. Kingdom of Thrace: Original King died a few years ago, his now 16 year old daughter and successor rules well with the “advice” of her father’s compatriots
  14. The True Path: Dominated by what can only be described as an intentionally bastardized version of the Wiccan Faith
  15. Republic of Rome: Founded by former Air Force personal. Originally a fairly moderate place but has taken a very hard right shift in recent years.
  16. Nova Rome: Really really mad they weren’t able to claim the other side of the Bosporus
  17. A haven of pirates who are taking advantage of the general chaos dominating the region. All of their neighbors have plans to deal with them but haven’t gotten around to it, yet.
  18. Wildcat Country: Even the leadership is starting to become embarrassed by the name. Nice place, mostly.
  19. Republic of Troy: Things have stabilized and they’re actually holding elections, occasionally, sort of. They’re trying okay.
  20. Arizona National Guard: Not actually founded by any of the former National Guard. A Police State, not particularly great to natives but far from the worst.
  21. A coalition of bandits, both uptimers and downtimers, have managed to create utter hell for everyone around them.
  22. Nogales: An attempt to create an Hispanic Ethno-State. Has had a really hard time dealing with the bandits
  23. The New Tucson Republic: Basically, a dictatorship but a friendly one
  24. The Old Pueblo itself, Tucson. Where Western Civilization died and something else was born. Viewed with fear and hunger by all factions. The city still contains a wealth of artifacts and valuable plunder but stubborn, crazed survivors still cling to the ruins
  25. The Field of Bones to most, Sun Devil Country to the more nostalgic. Where most of Tucson’s population died. Populated by a large number of bandits, cannibals, hardcore survivalists and all other kinds of pleasant people.
  26. Baja Arizona: Catholic, nice people but you don’t get to vote unless you're attending mass regularly
  27. Three Siblings tried to create a state together. The sister went fascist, the younger brother went Socialist and the eldest decided that looting and pillaging was far more interesting than ruling
  28. The United States of America (New Washington): Founded by elements of the Tucson police and the Air Force. Actually a semi-functioning democracy if heavily influenced by the military.
  29. United States of America (Globe): Believes New Washington is betraying American Values, very Libertarian in ideology but practice mostly just a dictatorship.
  30. The Kingdom of God (Oakland): Ruler claims to be regent for his brother, Jesus Christ. Most of his cohorts are desperate enough to roll with it
  31. The Emergency Council: Founder was on the city council and thus arguably has the strongest claim for legitimacy. Trying to ally with New Washington against Oakland but with limited success.
  32. The Progressive Republic of New California: It proved shockingly easily to convince the Hittie population about the dangers of Vaccines. Currently dealing with a plague
  33. What remains of New America, the first organized survivor state. Currently divided between a faltering Republic, a struggling “People’s republic”, a rising new age cult and a possibly insane kingdom.
  34. Scavengers. Towns and villagers that survive off of salvage expeditions to the Old Pueblo. Dangerous but increasingly profitable. Though every so often a group of bandits slaughter an entire village
  35. The broken remnants of the Kingdom of Avalon. One of the more successful survivor states until it’s King went and died without a clear successor
  36. The Emergency Safety Commission: Mostly just focused on trying to stay alive at this point.
  37. The New Pueblo: Founded by a collection of University of Arizona Professors and Students. An ‘Intellectual’ Republic that’s become increasingly hostile to anything they consider “reactionary”.
  38. The Hattusa Republic: The Conquerors of the Hittie Capital (Even though it was largely depopulated when they arrived), this particular group of hardline survivors has gone to great lengths to present themselves as the successors of the Hittie Civilization, to mixed success. Still one of the stronger states around.
  39. The Median Kingdom: The King’s eccentric but well liked and has done a lot to open his borders up to those fleeing Hattusa and the New Pueblo.
  40. United States of America (Trebizond): Originally founded by people determined to get as far away from the Chaos as Possible, recently they’ve begun making plans eventually come west and “Restore” democracy to the region.
  41. A borderline no-man's land populated by bandits, raiders and a few scattered villages, plagues hit the region hard and now few want to be caught inbetween the Hattusa Republic and the Hitties.
  42. True America: Decided that the best way to ‘restore’ America in this ‘savage’ land was by comitting genocide against the Hitties, a Pariah state even among the survivors.
  43. The New Roman Consulate: Went really hard on the Roman Cosplay and basically decided to create the Roman Republic, minus the sexism. Has shockingly proven rather successful., though power rests entirely in the hands of the survivor elite.
  44. The Broken Coast: A number of survivor states were started here in the early years, only to flounder and die. Now populated by small villages and pirates.
  45. A lot of Myceneans fled to Cyprus hoping to find refuge from the survivors pouring out of Anatolia, only discover the Americans had reached the island first. Things were so chaotic though they managed to grab enough land on the western coast to form a colony
  46. The American Empire: Emperor Jacob dreamed of uniting the whole region under his banner, now he’s completely bedridden and just hopes his son will be able to hold onto his throne.
  47. The Hittite Empire, what’s left of it. Wracked by plague, unrest, American Fillbusters trying to crave out a chunk for themselves. Surviving largely because no one at the moment has the strength left to finish them off.
  48. Egypt. The Hyksos still only barely understand what’s going on in Anatolia but they are more than grateful for the adventurous gunsmiths who come offering their services and muskets. They’re less grateful for the plagues and the occasional invasion attempt.
  49. Assyira is still here, I promise. Borders are a bit influx at the mount on account of widespread disease outbreaks.
  50. Survivors who decided a simple life spent fishing was better than getting involved in the mess back east, desperately hoping no one realizes they’re there.

They really should have taken that left turn at Albuquerque.

  49. Assyira is still here, I promise. Borders are a bit influx at the mount on account of widespread disease outbreaks.
  50. Survivors who decided a simple life spent fishing was better than getting involved in the mess back east, desperately hoping no one realizes they’re there.

Really reminds me of EBR's "Tzedek, Tzedek, Tirdoof". Nice work.

Modernization 1960: Catastrophe Need Not Repeat

I had the idea to make a map series where I "modernize" various points in history, with the expected cultural, political, technological, etc. changes. [1] Here's the first in this series: the year 1960. If you've got any ideas for future installations in this series, tell me and I'll probably do them.

- The Cold War has been ongoing for a little longer here than in OTL- pretty much since the end of World War II. The fear of nuclear annihilation is even more pronounced than OTL, as TTL's World War II ended with several cities on both sides being nuked. [2]
- The United States is a conservative-leaning state and is under a two-party system with the Republican party, which is run by neoliberals, and the Democratic party, which resembles OTL's pre-Reagan Republican party, and while all of the same politicians as OTL 1960 are still around, their political views have shifted a bit from OTL to compensate for the changed political situation. Segregation isn't the current major issue the United States faces, as it's less racist than OTL's 1960 (though more racist than OTL's modern day) and segregation was abolished in 1933, and there isn't really anything analogous to it right now, either, though LGBTQ+ rights might take a similar role in the future given a decade or so.
- Britain and France are culturally in a similar state to America, though they're more conservative than the Americans given that the Soviets are right next door. Both of them have given up their colonial empires for a few decades now, though both of them have kept some areas by promising them equal representation in Parliament, which they've actually followed through on for the most part, since they're usually small enough that it doesn't really make much of a difference (Australia and New Zealand being major exceptions in the case of Britain). In Africa and Asia, however, they've pulled most of their former colonies into the "Anglophone Union" and the "Francophone Union," respectively, which have ended up de facto being a front for British and French neocolonialism. [3] The various former colonies haven't fallen for it in the slightest, however, and almost all of them are agitating to leave the respective unions.
- Franco's Spain is a rogue state backed by the west- think North Korea, but fascist and if the "good guys" were the ones propping it up. France has to deal with a lot of refugees from Spain trying to flee across the border, mainly Basques and Catalans.
- The Soviet Union is basically Putin's Russia, but with a red coat of paint and a nasty Russian-supremacist angle. Its puppets in the Warsaw Pact are much the same, minus the Russian-supremacy part.
- The United Arab States is a regional power in the Middle East aligned with the Soviets, though it isn't a communist state and is actually rather conservative, though still secular.
- The People's Republic of China is basically all the worst parts of North Korea and Maoist China combined and is considered a rogue state by the west. The Chinese are working on producing nuclear weapons of their own, which makes everybody very nervous, including the Soviets.
- Pakistan is a totalitarian rogue state suspected of committing genocide in Bangladesh.
- India is a dominant-party leftist state, and though it's been almost fifty years since it gained independence, it still hates the British enough to lean towards the Soviets. It's rather preoccupied dealing with secessionist movements, mainly in Kashmir.
- Technology is much the same as OTL 2019, save for nuclear tech being several decades behind. However, everything has a sixties aesthetic, which results in some things looking very similar to how they did in OTL's 1960. The Internet still exists and is about as free as OTL's Internet, though it's heavily censored across the Warsaw Pact and outright banned in countries like Spain, Pakistan, and China. Global warming has been set back a bit thanks to the mini Ice Age caused by the large amount of nuclear detonations at the end of World War II, but it's probably going to get worse in the future, given how everyone's more focused on the Cold War than the environment.

[1] I decided to "update" more things than the technology so it wouldn't end up just being "OTL 1960 but with modern technology."
[2] Technically, nukes were developed during World War I in this world, but they weren't actually used during the war and nuclear research stagnated during the interwar period.
[3] Please note that this isn't meant to be a commentary on OTL's European Union- the only thing the Anglophone and Francophone Unions share with the EU is having the word "Union" on the end of their names.

Oh yeah, this looks like the start of an interesting series - Looking forward to the next one!

One small note... Segregation abolished in 1933? Either the year got typed wrong or this USA was far less racist than OTL - wondering how that came to be?

I mean, I been to Jerusalem, its a amazing, but the capital of the Empire to it? Caesarea Maritima makes more sense. And yeah...how many Jews would really accept a Roman as the Messiah? Third Temple Judaism may be the official religion of the Eastern Roman Empire, but in reality, its all the other faiths. (Roman Polytheism, Hellenism, Olympianism, the Neterians, etc. ) Even Byzantine Christianity seem to be a in better position, and Tengrism and Fae.

Also Persia seem to have gotten screw over a bit, and a part of the Empire.

I can only wonder what the West looks like.

Quick scenario:
  • Bulgaria got northern Macedonia and Thrace after the First Balkan War (1912-1913)
  • Bulgaria joined the Entente in WW1 gaining the Gallipoli Peninsula.
  • WW1 ends a in March 1918 with a sooner collapse of the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires due to Bulgarian aid.
  • The country remains neutral in WW2 (however it allows pass to German troops on their way to Greece)
  • During the Cold War it remains neutral due to pro-Russian/Soviet feelings amongst the population.
  • After the End of the Cold War Bulgaria joins the EU and NATO

Well, to get a 1960 this different from OTL (Indian independence in 1910? 60 more years of technological progress?) you'd need a fairly remote POD (or series of PODs), which could easily mean a different US Civil War and reconstruction.

Here's a new wikibox/map for the RDNA-verse. This time, it covers the Kuban Insurrection, which took place towards the tail end of the in-universe Upheaval that threatened to tear New Austria apart. The original can be found here.

To my own surprise, while the existing text has managed to hold up pretty well, there's enough worth elaborating to make a wikibox.

All the same, hope you enjoy!

...Few at the time expected how extensive and tumultuous the Terror’s impact was despite attempts to mitigate the damage. With the collapse of international trade and the intricate Mitteleuropa socio-economic system, as well as growing fears of Collectivist infiltration, New Austria was forced to resort to both rationing and strict measures to keep order. Even as social tensions simmered to unprecedented heights, the continuing flow of incoming refugees from the Atlantic and a need to maintain whatever commitments still mattered – such as the decision to aid the Canadians in their “Dominion War” against Collectivist and Reactionary groups – pushed the realm to near-breaking point. By 1926, “exceptional” civil unrest began plaguing the R.D.N.A, becoming more widespread by the following year. Whether in the countryside or in major cities like Engelnstadt, riots and banditry were no longer unheard of. The Polizei, reserves and the handful of regiments left behind found themselves under tremendous strain just ensuring that the “exceptional” civil unrest didn’t escalate into full-anarchic lawlessness. While in Havana, dissidents and rebellious elements took advantage of the disorder to stage what is now called the Kuban Insurrection in 1928, promising freedom even while persecuting the loyalist populace. To live in such times must have been akin to seeing hell.
It was no surprise that the press, or what still remained active amidst the chaos, dreaded that in spite of martial law across New Austria, the country was about to suffer the same fate as its counterparts across the Atlantic. But that horrid fate was not to be. When the Polizei were incapable, overstretched or non-existent, locals and refugees alike strove to take back their home from the bandits and feuding cliques. A sense of solidarity among the realm’s peoples, their continuing loyalty to their suffering monarch and the persistence of institutions like the Catholic Church meant that even during the worst movements, the social fabric still held firm. And as the last of the New Austrian expedition returned with what remained of the Crownlands, order and some degree of normalcy soon restored, one Crown Province at a time. Before long, the same valiant souls who saw nations die and faced down their foes with their Canadian comrades-in-arms came to the rescue of the loyalist Kubans. The fierce campaign that ensued ended the Insurrection in 1933, led to the Carriedo Compromise the following year and helped put a dark chapter to a close once and for all.

All while the government, under the more direct intervention of Franz Ferdinand I continued to function despite the dangers. It was during this difficult time that the 1927 Papal Concordat was signed with what remained of the Holy See, the now Vatican-in-Exile’s sanctuary being the religious community of Mariazell-am-Meer. The Archduke himself, soon after a discreet coronation ceremony and still traumatized from his ancestral domain’s downfall, addressed the Reichstag in 1928. The Succession Address, as it came to be known, was broadcasted to every corner of the R.D.N.A., at once reaffirming the now Throne-in-Exile’s common struggle and personally assuring the public that they would prevail. More importantly, it was this speech, unprecedented for the period that both proclaimed New Austria as the legitimate successor to the Crownlands and led to the ratification of the present Constitution.

The map used is from New Austria and the Upheaval-Francesca's Copy. As the name implies, it's a bit of a spoiler.

In addition, the flag used for the Insurrectionists is that of the Club de la Habana from the 1840s.

@mdc_1957, I really love your works your posting here, but I'm just curious about if Kuba/Cuba had defeated New Austria and won total independence?

Thanks!

As for Kuba/Cuba, they remain under New Austrian rule, though the compromises made have made it autonomous in almost every respect. In addition, after centuries it's incorporated enough German that the local variant of Spanish simply sounds off to the remaining Hispanosphere.

It's not a typo, no. The USA was much less racist in TTL's 1930s than OTL because to get to "modern" levels of technological and social progress by 1960 (which was the general idea behind the scenario), the timeframe for both of those has been shifted backwards, so there isn't really a clear PoD. TTL's overall history runs rather similar to OTL, but the details are rather different thanks to the technological, cultural, etc. adjustments to make sure it's "modernized" by 1960- think of it as the same path, but with different steps taken.
